>ok guys, turns out humans only have 2 hands so let's make it so they can actually hold the controller this time
>oh shit, we forgot to put the handle on the C stick and left off one of the shoulder buttons
were nintendo's controllers designed by aliens?

I really don't get why they didn't just out 4 shoulder buttons.

PS1 made it a standard. Was it just stubbornness?

Isn't it kind of fucking how the gamecube is nintendo's only console with analog triggers and an ethernet port

People aren't perfectly symmetrical. They designed the controller to have more buttons on the most common dominant hand of their audience. Your dominant hand has more coordination than the other.

Not too great, the games definitely had an intended controller and it was basically always the PS2 pad. Even on the Xbox they suffered, tony hawk and GTA games have some weird binds you can't do much about on the Xbox. No exception on the gamecube either, considering it's missing select, R3/L3 equivalents, an L1 equivalent and has a shit button layout.

Nintendo thought controllers had too many buttons and intimidated consumers even though the PS2 launched a year before and did fine, even with normies who just wanted a dvd player.

The idea was to make important buttons stand out, blend unimportant buttons, and allow the mind to group buttons by varying color, shape, and size.

I'd say it didn't work. Not only was it not necessary but the asymmetry and garishness of it all makes everything stand out for the count. I think the only thing that worked towards their goal was the huge ass A button and sensible colors. Green means go red means no. Fucking baffling how few consoles got that right.

I think there's three things they should've not fucked up while still being consistent with the philosophy they took. Have a left Z because they were the least conspicuous buttons on the controller when viewed from the front and clutters nothing, yet it's not there. Have click sticks because they are literally invisible. And most importantly but a normal sized cap on the C-button. You can even keep it yellow with the little faggot C. They could have even released a revision of the controller with just that last change and probably undo a lot of the damage.

select button is a meme that should've never been started and shouldn't have shipped on controllers once they got 4 face buttons

Nigga what? What other console at the time had four shoulder buttons? The Xbox didn't. The N64 didn't. The Dreamcast sure as hell didn't. Four shoulder buttons was still considered a weird quirk of the Playstation controller at the time. It didn't become standard until gen 7 when the Xbox 360 and Wii Classic Controller adopted it. Hell, the Gamecube having three was ahead of its time.

The thing that's ACTUALLY wrong with the C-stick and not a meme is that its deadzone is FIFTEEN FUCKING PERCENT. I use the Gamecube controller for PC games pretty often because its primary stick is so perfect (0-0.5% compared to my logitech disaster's awful 6% and square deadzones), but the C-stick zones are actual garbage. Assholes just wanted you to flick this thing in the games and didn't think of any other developer use for it obviously.

>left off one of the shoulder buttons
Four shoulder buttons were not standard at the time. Playstation had it, but Saturn and Dreamcast did not. The only reason it has a third button there is because without a middle prong like N64, they had to move the Z button somewhere.

Zelda changes all the time. Zelda 2 is completely different to 1. Ocarina made the transition to 3D. Windwaker had an all new art-style. BOTW went open world. And there are loads of spin offs in completely different genres, like Cadence of Hyrule and Hyrule Warriors.
