This game feels like a bit of a downgrade from the NES games. It's a bit too easy overall, with a few bullshit spikes of difficulty (e.g. stage 8 towards the end). The whip felt really strong, like it could deal with most situations easily. One of the things I liked most about the NES Castlevanias was coming up with strategies for specific parts, this meant memorising where side weapons would drop which helped make levels memorable. Even though I've just beaten C4 I find it hard to recall individual levels as easily.

Also it looks kind of ugly/bland for the most part. Music is just servicable too, with only 1 or 2 standout tracks, which is a downgrade from the NES games where every track was catchy and memorable.

The random disappearing block bridge in 8-2 took me longer to get past than the entire rest of the game. I spent over 50 minutes game overing repeatedly on that one segment. In that same amount of time I could have finished CV1 or 3.

Reminder that you're only allowed to like SCIV if you either had it as a kid or are a filthy casual.

The spikes before that part took me like an hour of attempts before I just snapped and save stated past it, by pure chance I got past the disappearing floor on the first try but I doubt I could do it consistently

Stage 8 is easily the shitest level in the game

it is, almost every good track is a rearrangement

Other than the animations being incredibly stiff and static looking, I think it looks fantastic. Better overall than the other 16-bit CVs in terms of backgrounds. The sprites look worse, but this is the first 16-bit CV game, so that's excusable.

sure its easy, and so are mario games, but its very satisfying to control your character in both games so the fun comes from using that to efficiently get through the game. mario 64 is piss easy but its still infinitely fun to long jump around the stage across platforms.
not to say original castlevania controls arent fun. theres a lot to enjoy when it comes to adapting to the way a game wants you to play.

as problematic as IV is, basically the only strategy in the classic games is keep the holy water and if you lose it suicide to reset the level so you can get the holy water.

The cross is just as generally useful in 3.

aside from Simon's Theme most of the original music is just moody atmospheric droning.
Which is fine for the more 'realistic' tone the game was going for but considering what the first 3 games had and what the other games in the same generation had going on for their soundtrack, it's lackluster.

Holy water is abusable for amateurs in 1 but the Cross is actually superior if you're skilled enough to do crits.

What game are you playing? Like sure, if 4's music isn't to your tastes, whatever, but outside of the intro scrawl before Drac's theme kicks in, I can't think of that many songs in 4 that can be considered droning.

This is damn well a melody.

This is droning, if anything.

I think you have your acronym backwards anon, but I didn't mean to imply anything negative about LoI, especially its music. Aria of Nightmare is one of my favorite songs, even.

IV is still more difficult than rondo and has less slowdown

I haven't had much experience with the Castlevania games. I've only seriously played Castlevania 1 on NES and beaten it a few times, though not in a long time. I have made two attempts to play SCIV but it never really grabbed me, and I'm not sure why.

I don't think it's a bad game at all, and I haven't played Castlevania 1 enough to understand why I liked that game so much. When I last played SCIV, I remember thinking there was "too much whipping" if that makes any sense. I think what I was getting at is that candle placement was a lot more common to account for the multi-directional whip, meaning there was way more stopping and starting which I felt harmed the pacing. Yet at the same time sub-weapons felt less useful due to the power of the whip this time around, so the hearts felt more tedious to collect than anything. Obviously the solution was to simply ignore the candles if I felt like I didn't need them, but I wasn't able to get myself to do that. I kind of just lost interest and put the game down instead.

Maybe in Castlevania 1 I felt like I genuinely needed the hearts and sub-weapons just to survive and didn't mind the process of breaking the many candles? There must have been less overall in that game. I'm not sure. I haven't explored much of the other Castlevania titles and it is something I want to do. I want to finish SCIV too someday.

Sounds sensible, honestly. Subs are still good for when you want to get in extra damage like crosses or attacking with the whip might be more clunky so you use the axe or holy water, but yeah. Thing is, 4 is arguably less demanding than the NES games when it comes to combat or at least you're not as fucked when you don't have the right sub to put it mildly, but is more demanding than probably most classicvanias period when it comes to platforming.

>I want to finish SCIV too someday
If you haven't already made it to the castle, maybe give that a shot. I don't know if it would alleviate your issues, but if it means anything to you, 4 treats its whole first half as something like a tutorial instead of, you know, just the first or so level. Maybe not difficult per se, but it does ramp up by the castle entrance.

And even if you end up not finishing 4 period, you should totally check out 3. It sounds like you just really prefer a tightly designed game that expects you to use all you have on hand, and 3 is that. Dracula X (SNES) also has it going on, and while Rondo of Blood is probably just as easy as 4 if not maybe moreso, it focuses more on enemy patterns, anime aesthetics, and exploration than platforming and is kind of the base for metroidvania games that came out afterward.

Thanks! I didn't make it to the castle on 4 so I think I will come back to it. I have heard it gets a lot better at that point. What you said about the less demanding combat and more demanding platforming actually might have been what was putting me off that I didn't realize. I don't really remember dying to the platforming in 1 and it was moreso the enemy encounters that would kill me. 4 did seem to have more opportunities to simply fall off the level, especially with enemy knockback. Anyway I will probably visit 3 beforehand though since I do like the sound of what you're saying. I'll also be sure to look into Dracula X and Rondo.
