I got Yuggot from '08 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/v-z/yuggot).). A nicely detailed techbase with lots of runs into unavoidable hurtfloor damage. Pretty easy overall though, slightly tight on health and ammo. This blue area was cool. Apparently used resources from RTC-3057 without credit but I'm not complaining since it used them well. 3.5/5

I got Ropy 2 from '04 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/p-r/ropy2).). A dumb name for a great level. Visuals remind me of Quake, maybe that's just all the brown but the architecture is great. The fights are all fun, the map is compact but swarming with hitscanners. Hell Knights and Archviles are also used well. Check this one out for sure, 4.5/5

My reason for asking is that Map 22 : Catacombs in Doom 2 doesn't really look anything at all like any catacombs, but in the beta stuff, "d2temp.wad", the map which is in Catacomb's final Map 22 slot, bears far more resemblance to real life catacombs, that level would later be cut apart and turned into the final Map 28 : The Spirit World

SKYEWOOD from '96 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/s-u/skyewood).). A set of 4 very trippy and creative maps. Gameplay is mediocre but it uses some trickery like deep water and self referencing sectors. Some outdoor areas are probably best suited for 320x200 since the mapper used flat walls with the sky texture to create the illusion of being able to see outside (see pic related). The Evil Dead soundbytes get old fast. Pretty interesting, I've only played the first map but I'll probably play the rest, 2.5/5 so far.

Alright, that wasn't bad. People in the reviews complained about using assets from RTC-3057, but that project was abandoned long ago, so I don't really care, it's not like the team was going to use it any more (though I guess it was a lot more recent at that time). Relatively short, but it's worth playing.

It's good looking, and the gameplay is pretty tough, really likes giving you mean ambushes. I like the blue outdoors area at the end (I don't remember if this was used or not in RTC-3057). Shame that it's just one single map, you could easily segway this into another map which is set more in these dark blue canyons, that are actually kind of hard to see in, Spectres blend in very well with these dark and grainy textures, which I guess is why the author put a bunch of them in that area.

How do you guys feel about the current state of random map generation?

Slige-The early days, showed some real promise, but always likes to make big rooms or long hallways. I think there's a site that generates 32-map megawad still out there

Oblige-The big one and the one that got the most attention. Able to give massive features depending on the source port and offered huge customization with different tabs. Huge innovation with complex rooms and areas, but suffered due to no traps/very plain progression. Which led to two forks.

Obhack-An old-time favorite, It utilized teleport traps/closets. Also had easier to find secrets. Unfortunately had trouble making big areas, was more centered on well developed, smaller rooms.

ObAddon-The only current one still in development and the best. Room complexity that is on par/or better than an average person. Closets/traps/monster turret areas. The only problems still left over is ammo control and finding weapons.

I had this potato-tier idea to replace the fugly demopack hand models in Oblivion by replacing them with the IreD tripmines from Zaero since the hand model for them was of better quality - and the detonator hand was thom that mods A2k 'suicide bomb vest' item that also gave you a handheld trigger - so it was a sound idea (in theory at least) to simply swap the models and their skins since the Oblivion mod doesnt keep its resources inside the .pak files for some reason (besides the deatomizer sprites and demos it seems)...

Doom's original soundtrack was made on a Roland SC55 card, so that or a soundfont emulating it would be the closest to what Bobby Prince was hearing while he made it. Adlib (aka OPL2/OPL3) was the most widely used card during the 90's so that is more accurate to what the average person back then would have heard.

I've actually scaled the weapons back to be -slightly- above vanilla damage rather than the overpowered nonsense it is currently.
There's still some strong melee weapons, and a few sets have more safe explosive options, but otherwise I've been doing a lot of refining so there's a greater risk of getting killed in normal play.
I plan on making the human based enemies a little more aggressive, and I'm gonna give them all a semi-weak grenade attack, though it'll have a timer fuse rather than detonate on impact. Tweaking the knockbkack attacks on the cacodemon and Chaingunner too, those sucked.

Never tried out anything but KMq2 and YamagiQ2 before DESU - q2PRO was just bundeled with that one map that refused to run on anything else (Ghooric Zone) and it also handses some other 'big open area' ones wholly CTD-free. I prefer the KnightmareQ2 engine port since it removes most is not all vanillaQ2 engine limitetions, and if that fails due to custom mod stuff not being supported by it, then I'd switch either to v3.24 or Yq2.

The official ports got polished up to be somewhere between Chocolate Doom and Crispy Doom in terms of gameplay and authenticity, and they've had a bunch of good stuff curated for them, including Rekkr.

A bunch of us here decided that we'd do a Boom format mapset, limited to 2048x2048 units of playable space, using GOTHICTX as an asset, the bulk of the hard work being done over the hot summer months, resulting in 32+6 levels, many which are good or even excellent.
The last version (there were some bugs to fix), should be out soon, as Version 1.5 of 2048 Units Of /vr/

People seem to have gotten some fire in their ass over what we put together and it really lit their creative spark, so people have been noodling away at stuff since 2048, a bunch more guys made Hellevator, another Boom mapset. I hear it's quite good.

Big rooms, pretty sparse, wallhump-progression, you have to noclip to get to the exit teleporter. Don't really see the point of anyone playing this nowadays. I played Hellevator. It's just Going Down clone without creativity, more dull combat and more boring maps. It's not special in any way. It's not bad, but the fact is that dozens of such amateur wads without creativity get released within a year. Why should Hellevator of all those deserve cacoward? It's just riding on Going Down's fame like all those otex maps, that think they are even close of Eviternity. Just because you have creator's love towards the wad, doesn't mean it's special. Everyone loves their own kids, even the retarded ones.

/vr/'s wads at the moment need more soul, something of their own and very much more focused combat. Now it's all bunch of dull amateur maps. Nothing wrong with it. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. But being mad because these wads didn' t get cacowards? That's too egoistic for your own good.
