7253971 No.7253971 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I have two different Chinese HDMI to VGA adapters with audio and they work great.

Just picked up this bad boy today. $5 at a real legitnl thrift store. Narrow hallways, big furniture, the whole experience.

Buttons on the front panel don't work (shocker), but the remote came with it and that works just fine.
This has the most picture settings I've seen on an old TV in a while, but I think this came out near the late 2000s since it has a sticker about the antenna-box switch in 2009.
I know Magnavox (Philips?) is high quality. I'm only disappointed by the lack of inputs. One (1) coaxial on the back and one composite port on the front.
Would prefer S Video but not on the TV evidently... and I would like all ports on the back but it's still a steal either way.

I imagine it's best to ask here: how do I connect a Famicom to a TV? It only has an "RF switch" in the back and I don't have a cable. I have a (Japanese) CRT as well but it only has AV in the front. I understand there's different types of boxes, cables, connectors, etc. but I'm pretty unfamiliar. It's too much hassle to buy another CRT because it was hell enough finding this one. What exactly do I look for? A RF to AV converter? etc.

>>7257746
The CRT doesn't have RF at all, even in the back? That is really unusual. If that's the case, you could buy an RF to AV converter, but I'm not sure how that would interact with the Famicom since it normally broadcasts on different channels than American NTSC consoles. It might make no difference and work fine, but I'd look into it just to be sure.

Another idea is to mod yourself or have your Famicom AV modded. The AV Famicom (gray console) is also a good choice. But if you're not interested in buying another or the mod, I guess try the converter.

I don't know what signal the N64 is natively, but S-Video can help even in devices that don't spilt chroma and luminance natively.

Like S-VHS and regular Laserdisc are actually natively composite, but S-video has better bandwidth and handles noise so much better.

So despite not actually splitting chroma and luminance like Betacam SP does, they can still benefit and look much better.

Bullshit. Cheap wired ones go up to 24kHz and HD Bluetooth about 17kHz, I believe. CDs go up to 44.1kHz, FLAC can go higher and have higher bitrate and then you have DSD, which is probably overkill.
Now, if you're listening to anything on MP3 or similar quality, of course a better pair (not more expensive, as we can see from Airpods and Beats) will only make a difference if the cheaper one is trash in the first place. That's why the audio source is usually more important than a headset/speaker. You can even apply that to video. A PVM or Trinitron won't make a poorly made copy of a film look good.

Hi, after many different attempts with many methods, i managed to get 240p working on a VGA CRT monitor. an HP 7540.

originally i had it rendering to 320x240, but it had some crazy static, but then changing it to a 2560x240 Superres fixed that in retroarch.

my problem now lies with the screen heights on some systems. some systems have different heights and the full screen is not used, so far PCEngine CD, CPS2, MK2/3, NES and SNES share the same height, but i have to change it for genesis for example

also, i feel the scanlines dont align as they should, heres is a pic of MvsC to illustrate what i mean...

everything prior to ps2/gcn/xbox/dreamcast worked exclusively in 480i/240p. 480i looks fine upscaled, but 240p gets fucked by scalers because it's not technically a standard image format, but an exploit of the 480i standard. and 14" PVMs are still relatively easy to come by

it depends on what your set is/will look like and your personal preference
i personally feel like 13"/14" is fine for everything thru gen 5, partially because i dont have a TON of space so 14" is great for me

you'll even see people gaming on 8" PVMs which to me is too small - those were built to be for like hallway security camera feeds in big ass security monitoring rooms. but hey, some people make it work (though i think there's an element there of people just buying into the PVM meme just to say they have a PVM)

if 13" is too small for your taste then look for a 20", just know that 20" broadcast monitors are kind of the rarest and most expensive these days, and personally I'd prefer to play on something slightly smaller with good tubes and component/s-video in rather than a big ass consumer tube tv with only composite video inputs

Thanks for the advice, i checked the deal with the Switchres, but it seems that it doesnt work with Nvidia cards.

I can get all resolution standards working (fixing the MvC deal from the photo in the process) but as much as i try, Retroarch doesnt change the resolutions automatically.

My idea is a dual screen set up, the monitor for retro games and a big screen tv for modern stuff, the closest i can think, at least for arcades, is to look up a way to separate my rom lists for monitor resolution so i can set a RA config per resolution required. But that certainly is not gonna help with consoles that also do resolution switching.

Just brought home my first CRT: a free Toshiba 27AF44. Sorry for the unaesthetic photo, I’m not really sure where to put it yet.
Doing as close to a side by side as I can, I think I prefer it to the LCD even before changing settings. At the very least, turning this on get incredibly nostalgic so it’ll be worth it for the comfy feeling.
I don’t think this is the original remote and the menu button won’t work, so I just ordered the one pictured in the manual. There are some weird, slightly bent in margins on the top and bottom of the sides that aren’t the end of the world. I’m not sure if that’s something that can be fixed without physically adjusting something. I’ve done little to no research outside of skimming the pastebins before. I just figured a free TV would be worth it.

I think you'll be able to adjust those in the service menu, using the remote. The setting will probably be called "pincushion." Don't expect to get it perfect, but you should be able to improve it a little.
Don't expect a crazy improvement, because what you've got honestly looks great as it is, it looks well-taken-care-of and doesn't look heavily used.

PVMs are any of Sony's line of Pro Video Monitors. They all have Trinitron tubes in them, accept a wide variety of inputs like RGB and S-Video, and look super bright, colorful, and sharp. These were mostly used by small scale commercial video production, security monitoring booths, hospitals, etc. These can be found for anywhere between free to a couple hundred bucks, but getting a little rare these days.

BVMs are Sony's Broadcast Video Monitor. These are basically just PVMs but designed and calibrated to maintain a standardized and consistent video quality from the top down. Usually these have far more adjustable settings for super granular things and can basically accept any type of legacy video signal you can throw at them. These were usually found exclusively in broadcast control rooms for television networks, and are pretty rare. They can cost thousands of dollars, and really aren't worth hunting down just because the image isn't any better than any PVM - it just has more things you can tweak.

Both of these will look brighter, sharper, and more vibrant than any older consumer set, mostly because the Trinitron tubes work differently than older tube TVs, letting more light (and color) through to the actual screen. Around the late 90s Sony's patent on Trinitron tubes expired, so Toshiba, Mitsubishi, and a bunch of other companies made their own version of them, often called stuff like Diamondtron or whatever. Unfortunately most people have caught on that Trinitron=money so searching for "trinitron" on ebay or whatever will just give you a pile of overpriced monitors, but you can find them for free.

tl:dr - PVMs are pro CRTs with good tubes, good settings, and lots of inputs. BVMs are super pro CRTs with good tubes, tons of settings, and tons of inputs. Consumer Trinitrons are good too, but might lack the inputs needed to get the best out of your consoles

Essentially correct except bvms do typically have better image quality and can display 480p and 720p. Bvms are all 600tvl and higher, up to 1000tvl. Pvms are anywhere from 350tvl to 600tvl.

The most expensive CRT I paid for, the Olympus OEV203 was $400 after I traded a few games I had doubles of in to some dude in Lansing, MI. The next most expensive was the TV in the back left, which is a KV-32XBR48, was $100. A rich older dude bought it back in 1998, and said he never used it because he was out on the road all the time. It is a curved XBR with component in, and yes I have my GC hooked up to OEM component cables. The GS420 Sony monitor I paid $50 bucks from some guy near me. The second to last most expensive is that small, but adorable Panasonic AG-500-R. You cant tell from the pic, but it has a vertical VCR integrated into it, and it's honestly by far my coolest looking CRT, "worst" in terms of quality because it has a shadow mask, but it's honestly a good picture. Composite in only. I paid $28 for it from an auction site. Had to drive 4 hours to get it though lol, so with gas you could say it's more expensive than the GS420. aaaand finally the Sony XBR960 with matching stand I got for . . free. Some dude was amazed I travelled an hour and a half away to get it, and gave it to me for free, and turned down the $50 he was initially asking for it. It has unfortunately developed an issue where it will rapidly cycle through inputs and stop at the memory card screen/ rand input. I don't think that's something replacing caps can fix, but I will open it up this summer and try to troubleshoot. If any of you anons know what it is, feel free to let me know.

well first of all, you're a worthless retard for coming into a CRT thread and asking what upscaler to buy for your OLED

but to your actual question, the OSSC is fine if you just want big crisp pixels. It only works with RGB so it won't work with every console, so something like an unmodded N64 is incompatible, but if all you want is your RGB systems to output big sharp pixels in 1080p, then a OSSC will do the job. Framemeisters and OSSCs work a little differently but the Framemeister is a more or less outperformed by the OSSC these days, Framemeisters have a little lag (OSSC is supposedly lagless) and Framemeisters can drop signal when there's a resolution change, which some games employ for different situations. On the other hand, OSSCs aren't designed for PAL signals. The OSSC is probably fine for what you're looking to do. Personally I own a Retrotink pro x2 for when I want to drag a console out to the living room to play Mario Party or whatever with some friends, and it more than gets the job done.

So why is that inferior to a CRT? Because that's not what went on back in the day, obviously. Upscalers and modern hardware are always going to behave differently then the hardware the games were actually designed for, and there's always going to be the specter of some kind of incompatibility looming around the corner. Old games are fucking weird. Developers played fast and loose with a lot of video standards because CRTs could largely handle anything thrown at them with no lag or signal drops. Upscalers/emulation/FPGA/whatever has come a long way towards making all these old games compatible with modern OLEDs but they'll never look exactly "right" to someone who is familiar to how they originally looked on contemporary hardware. Duh

Looks great. Maybe shift the image to the left and horizontally stretch it a bit. Every console outputs slightly different horizontal and vertical sizes, so if you perfect the grid for one console it might not be perfect on another. Just something you have to live with, and it's really not noticeable. Personally I'd be fine with this, you've done all you can with on screen options.

The slight vertical sag on the top row CAN be fixed, but that would require opening up the back and reseating the yoke while the tube is on. This is a fairly advanced adjustment, so unless you have experience with CRT repair I'd suggest just leaving it alone.

could be a bad solder join on the memory chip. most late model sets have a microcontroller type of thing that handles settings. start with easy shit. if it has an input button, blow out the button with air or contact cleaner. i've had sets that I thought were dead in the water but it was a bad power button and that's why they were on the curb. LCD and CRT both.

>I could see the effect being limited to just the bright area of the screen, but that speaks of EXTREMELY poor regulation - I usually don't see it unless there are large changes in overall brightness level.
>It does not depend on the presence of a shadow mask or aperture grille. It's just that some monitors have better regulation than others. A tube without a shadow mask doesn't have to have nearly the beam current as one with, so it's much easier to keep the HV independent of the beam current.
>I've heard this called both "blooming" and "pumping", with "blooming" sometimes said to be a more serious condition in which the raster not only grows but also loses focus. This is also due to poor HV regulation (focus anode voltage is derived from the same circuit that drives the accelerating anode)

This isn't true. Some of the models with rgb+svideo have economy counterparts with just svideo. Svideo seems to be on everything from the late 80s on. The only pvm branded monitor I've come across without svideo was like pic related, which was from 1985 so it predated svideo.
Rgb is pretty common but still not really a sure thing. YPbPr is mostly restricted to later model 600tvl monitors and up. Bvms usually have rgb+YPbPr but not, svideo.

I have the same setup like yours with the dual monitors. The way I do it is to add all the resolutions to the Nvidia control panel. Then you'll have to make a bunch of core overrides like this:

bsnes.cfg
>aspect_ratio_index = "23"
>video_fullscreen_x = "1920"
>video_fullscreen_y = "1120"
>custom_viewport_width = "1920"
>custom_viewport_height = "1120"

Beetle PSX.cfg
>aspect_ratio_index = "23"
>video_fullscreen_x = "1920"
>video_fullscreen_y = "1200"
>custom_viewport_width = "1920"
>custom_viewport_height = "1200"

As far as I know, this is the only way to automatically switch resolutions on an Nvidia card without using switchres or crtemudriver.
Also, I use 1920x1200 because I don't like the way VGA monitors look at actual 240p, so instead I just a higher resolution with a shader.
