Is this game overrated? I finally got around to playing it and I'm not seeing what's so great about it? It seems like a generic jrpg, was it revolutionary for the time? Do I just not have the childhood nostalgia?

it's a single player game so it's going to be comfy and casual, like grinding 1ccs in arcade shit, no time limit

nothing happens if you lose, no real leaderboards or rank, no tournaments, u can spend years pretending you are skilled

I thought the same, apparently being able to see the monsters before you fight makes it 10/10 or something

but we're making a dead leaderboard for shmup scores come and join and pretend to be good at something by memorizing 1 route (one route) for months/years

no time limit? no losses? you can grind save states for 500 hours if you need to?

the story and characters are the main reason people love it. also the pixel art was beautiful at the time and still kinda is. the music is my favorite part, it's quite good

This. Same reason any given jrpg is popular?

For me it's
1. gameplay & combat
2. TREASURE
3. story/characters/presentation
4. replay value NG+ and challenges

I like story and characters, but treasure is also really important. I think the concept of treasure in games is really interesting, it can be a thrill to find good loot, to solve puzzles and get rewarded, to optimize your gear and a fun gameplay mechanic that can add more replay value

>fucking incredible soundtrack, even better a fucking incredible soundtrack on the SNES
>great character designs
>very good pixel art
>utilizes the time travel concept very well, letting you go to a variety of locations and experience different stories
>can pick up an actual interesting cast of characters in your party like a cursed frog-man, a robot, a cave-woman, and even the main villain
>has incredibly good pacing, there is almost never a need to slow down and grind, you are always going to a new location and experiencing a new part of the story
>lots of endings, more than most other JRPGs

Nah. It's solid all around.

Don't try to pass judgement and keep playing. Gameplay is FFVII-style unlosable garbo, but otherwise the package is practically perfect.

Some of the end game bosses can be pretty difficult. The final boss is kinda bullshit at times but thats about it

>> No.7251413

>>7251404
"Pretty difficult" means "try a second time, now aware of the gimmick" in Chrono Trigger. The first boss should have been like Ozzie's palace and the later bosses should have been ten times more challenging.

Its still the best paced RPG ever made. The structure is unmatched. No single dungeon wears out its welcome, no single plot thread drags. The subsystems are concise and versatile at the same time. Its a game with no needless fluff

No. OP is right. It is a generic children's JRPG for consoles. This game is, at most, endearing if you turn off your brain and approach it as a very casual experience. It was not revolutionary or compelling as a real RPG in the same way that the best computer games were, and nothing on the SNES library was either.

so like every other predictable single-player game where you set your own goals, do repetitive attempts at your own pace and nothing matters when you die and no living opponent to face or challenge you

It removed every ounce of the tedium that was common to RPGs of the day and even ones after it. It's digestibility still hasn't been topped. Sure it's story is very 90s video gamey with all the good and bad associated with it, but the way the plot is structured is literally perfect.

yep also no real eaderboards no ranks or tournaments nothing, might as well play solitaire alone in the dark

CT has okay loot its no diablo 2 or anything

Great music and people like all the different endings. It's really cool how all the characters have combo attacks with each other as well.

Being honestly though, with the exception of the minor variations on the main ending, Chrono Cross did the wholealternate ending schtick better since the different endings in Chrono Trigger barely qualify as endings.
