7250338 No.7250338 [Reply] [Original]

I've never had a problem with the N64 controller. I just hold the controller by the left and right prongs. I really don't see what the big deal is.

People who complain about it have actually never held one. It's because the original controller doesn't play well with their emulation set up and PS4 controller, which is obviously all Nintendo's fault of course.

Analog stick turns to shit quickly. Dpad is good but isn't used for 99% of games making you wonder why they bothered.

>> No.7250394

There's an absolutely miniscule amount of games that even use the dpad let alone the L button.
Most games don't even let you navigate menus with the dpad! They might as well have left it out entirely.

No you retard. You always grip the right prong and you grip either the middle or left prong depending on whether or not the game you're playing uses the Dpad or analog stick to move.

This. It's easy to forget analog input was somewhat new and unproven at the time, and thus Nintendo wasn't entirely sure how people would interface with it.
That's why the stick and the d-pad (and L and Z) are just considered mutually exclusive by design.
Presumably if people just hated analog controls they could just tell people to hold it by the dpad and everyone pretend the analog stick never existed.

But they did just think in the purely binary either you only use the stick or you only use the d-pad.
it wouldn't be until later that people would even consider that for some games there's no reason for you not to let both the stick and the d-pad move the character, or that the d-pad could be used as its own input entirely.

All Sony have done there is rip off a SNES controller and added two prongs on the sides. Then copied the analogue stick (Added two because copying the C-Buttons would have been too obvious) and rumble (after seeing the rumble Pak).

The also copied the Wii remote and Nunchuck after making fun of it and unsuccessfully adding motion controls to the Sixaxis? Remember that? They even copied the Wii U gamepad with the PS4 controller and that shitty touchpad that no one used.

Those are modern axis controls that are used on literally every console shooter today. If they release an N64 classic edition it would be the only thing keeping GE or PD playable. It's in the game, but rare didn't make it default because people weren't ready for it. The PS1 alien shooter by argonaut got critically panned for using those controls even though they had been normal to PC players for years. For some reason people learned the controls for halo, I couldn't tell you what changed. But more boomer normies were playing goldeneye so walking and turning on the same stick was crucial

This could be right, but it makes even less sense because they complain about the 3 grips and isolated dpad/analog when it's the c buttons that make it annoying to map. Sometimes mapping c sticks to analog is ideal, sometimes mapping it to the dpad is ideal, and sometimes you need 6 face buttons.

I'm just gonna say it, we should go back to having six face buttons, on top of having two pairs of shoulder buttons/triggers. Two extra buttons would open up so much. I've played several games that had to map at least one function to the d-pad on top of using face and shoulder buttons. D-pad up is fine for semi-rarely used functions but anything beyond that is just clunk city. We deserve two more face buttons, we're good enough for two more face buttons.
