This question has probably been asked to death but if I wanted to get into the RPG genre where should I start? It seems so intimidating to see everyone talking about them and not know anything.

This. If an RPG doesn't grab you on its own and you only play it after having it recommended you probably won't like it.

>> No.7236968

be aware that final fatasy tactics is different than other ff games.

also, some final fantasy games are not really rpgs. Though tactics is, ff adventure or legends for the gameboy would not be if I recall, and one was actually a first, the real first, secret of mana game. USA first was on the snes though. Then there's a third for the usa, but we never got it, so it'd be two to us when really threee. But they're not turn based thingies so it doesn't count. If they did, my next post is 'rpg elements' games list if I were lazy posting I'd post that. I better not.

It's more art and ambiance than great plots. It's about escaping your world. That's why they are so otherworldly. Do you want to star in a comfortable adventure or in a Hannibal Lecture novel?

Think about it. It's a game, not a book. You play the role, you self insert into a life more than story. Grinding even makes it fell like work. The level system, the battles drawn out, it makes it take longer than normal games. It's like a life.

I would rather be born into a magnificent world than be a well drawn character in a well drawn story for the gods to laugh at. It's not a sim game but a rpg.

Get it?

Well, the people that make/made them and play them do get it.

I've only played the beginning of chrono trigger, the beginning of ff7, and like halfway through a pokemon game I get stuck because I have no idea how to level my pokemon to the point they need to be leveled to. The irony is, I hoard roms and especially rpgs like the apocalypse is in an hour, but for some reason I just never seem to stick to them.

pic related because my ape brain just likes platformers and roguelites

You think you do, but you don't. If you haven't been conditioned since childhood to enjoy the slow paced grindy gameplay and retarded story tropes then you never will.

If you must, then go with Chrono Trigger. It's OK, at least for an RPG.

I say something similar about sexual and romantic endeavors to people on the Internet but they always delete it as pedo apology.

Whatever you do know that there is absolutely no shame in speeding up turn based battles with an emulator and using save states to avoid failing and having to repeat shit. You're time is valuable, use it wisely, ignore purist pseuds.

Final Fantasy VII, Pokémon Red/Blue and Chrono Trigger are the most historically and culturally important JRPGs in history. If you cant enjoy and get through those don't even bother with anything else retro and try the modern stuff like Dark Souls instead.

it's true, it by no means implies they are the best, they just had the largest impact on the collective conscious of humanity.

>inb4 people saying it's the og final fantasy, dragon quest, etc for the sake of being pioneers or whatever
You wouldn't claim rupestrian cave paintings to be the absolute most historically and culturally important paintings

Oh and I just realized OP was referring to rpgs in general, not just jrpgs. that does change things a bit but it seems like the entirety of the thread is exclusively discussing jrpgs.

If you go into a new genre you always start with the best.
For cRPGs that would be Planescape Torment.
For action RPGs it's Gothic 1. Unless you want first person perspective, then it's Arx Fatalis.
If you want something that controls like an action RPG but isn't one, it's TES Morrowind.
Then there's Deus Ex which technically is an RPG but it's also so much more and it's the best game in this post.

That's a total of 5 RPGs that will serve as a good introduction to the genres. I didn' include any jRPG because I don't play gay shit but some anons praise Kingdom Hearts if you're into this shit.

They were when it got good, not when it's culturally important and a new development.

They are peak, and ruin the rest for you infact like I already told OP that what is good will kill it.

Wizard created random battles, that really old shit. That was culturally important.

zoomer

you implied that it got better or even on part with ff7/chrono/trigger/etc post retro days and thus should fuck off to /v/

i believe the most accessible and also one of the very best is final fantasy 7. it will give you the real experience of an rpg, and you'll find out wheher that;s your cup of tea or not. but you also don't have to struggle with it, it's not really hard at all yet it's super fun and the story is really involving. it's just the right blend. and i say that as someone who has played many rpg games. not just trying to give you a title for beginners. it just happens that the very best games are often accessible to all players. and rpgs often are not. they did a great job with ff7. it's a mainstream title but it's really deep, yet never to the point that someone who doesn't 'get' an rpg can't play it.
