you know that video of a black guy watching a video, recording his reaction, then he gets surprised by the text "niggers" in the spongebob font?
someone made tf2 sfm versions but with characters saying words that they say, instead of actual insults to them, missing the point
>soldier reacting to "maggots" which is his insult to others, not the other way around
much like that banjo/korone meme, it's like an unnecessary meme template

as if some internet meme ban or the actual end of the world and the human race is related to this
we reached a point where normies took over wojaks, turned them into picrew avatars and started an actual race war with their wojaksonas

anyway, off-topic, sorry

Different Anon, here. If live commentary isn't doing it for you then just record all your audio after you've captured your footage. Chances are it'll be a bit more cohesive than it would have been otherwise, planning and good analysis goes a long way towards making playthrough videos fun and informative to watch. This also makes the audio levels consistent throughout so your mic isn't clipping during intense sections, etc. Whatever you do, just play to your strengths and the rest will come naturally.

Because the position data in animations was a single byte per vertex, and not even fixed point. So it's somewhat related to the reason why polygons jiggle in ps1 games. Never bothered with the QC lore - didn't even read your image - but I like the more earnest notions of Quake than Doomguy, though that's what most people love about Doomguy. Demons got his rabbit, demons are going to pay. But Ranger is the nth degree of "I didn't sign up for this shit, I just want to go home." But he'll never go home. He's trapped between the slipgates, forever fighting Quake's seemingly endless generals. He'll never see the fruits of his trials. But despite of all of this complete and utter suffering, he's still fighting.

Of what, a fat load of codex entry word vomit? Just keep it simple and you can still get across traveling across loads of worlds, enemies, encounters, etc. Again, Amid Evil accomplishes this neatly; I'd argue even original Quake, it's expansions, and Arcane Dimensions does as well.
Original Doom was also good about this: Compared to all that's in the manual, there's nothing quite like reaching Phobos Anomaly to get torn to shreds, with oddly appropriate music reflecting the situation.

a graph is just a group of nodes (some piece of data) with connections between them. connected nodes are related in some way.

in this case the nodes are convex sectors (groups of walls that are convex), connected to other sectors via "portals". the relation between connected sectors is that they're physically connected, but you can do other effects with portals.

build uses a similar idea, but with concave sectors because ken silverman is some kind of alien genius.

convex - no line drawn through a wall can intersect another wall in the group

concave - certain lines through a wall intersect through multiple walls in the group.

convex is a desirable property because it means that within a single convex group of walls, you know that none of them can overlap each other on-screen.

For me it's the Fighter because I love his speed and the axe, but they all have their merits. Cleric has the best final weapon, but the mace is awful. The Mage has the best starting weapons, but his other spells are kind of underwhelming.
>is there anything more to melee combat but spamming attack and backing away when they attack?
Nope, not really. It's very basic.

It ain't good, that's for sure. If you pull a switch, you should be able to immediately see what it did, otherwise you should use a colored key - that's how good level design is supposed to work. But in Hexen you often need to pull eight different switches to open a door, and they're not even on a same map, but all over the hub, and the switches don't clearly indicate what they do. I heard Hexen II is even worse in this regard, but I can't comment on that.

It's somewhat of a meme. There are switch hunts, but it's not like you're completely blind, the game gives you some guidance on what to do. Like if you press a switch that affects another level, itll say something like "a door has opened in x level". Since the maps arent huge, it shouldnt be that difficult to just remember what it says and find the door.

Quake's grenade launcher is among the funnest weapons to use of all time. The arching trajectory and slow-moving projectile means it's very difficult to land shots at first, but it makes it that much more satisfying to score hits, and the very high damage output makes it worth it. More importantly, because the projectile moves slower than a rocket, you get more time to move out of the way so you can use the grenade launcher at closer ranges than the rockets, you can bounce shots around corners, and the grenade launcher fires faster so it does more damage assuming your shots hit.

Quartz Flask is basically a Medikit that you carry around, Tome of Power beefs your weapons up to a sometimes absurd degree for a short period of time, Shadow Sphere is kinda like the blursphere but actually kinda useful, since physical projectiles like the knight axes will go through you while its active. Other than that the Ring of Invulnerability is pretty obvious, and Wings of Wrath are great for backtracking to get goodies you might have missed. The others like the Chaos Device and Time Bomb are a bit more niche, but since you can only carry one of each item between levels, its never a bad idea to use any excess whenever it suits you. Chaos Device in particular can be great for not getting ambushed by monster closets when learning new maps.

Yes and no. Within one hub (which is a level) are multiple areas with an overarching puzzle to solve, you're only given a message telling you how far you are into solving something or what is set off when you make progress. It can be vague, but what grinds my fucking gears about Hexen are the fucking Centaurs. Bloody things just cockblock all of your attacks as long as their shield is up unless Parias or Daedolon use flechettes, and there's even a variant with projectiles. They make the combat even worse and there's up to 344 of the regular ones in the game too, fuck them.

Most of the weapons are by default designed more around pushing back enemies than they are just quickly killing them outright. Its a bit of an annoyance to some people how spongy a lot of the enemies in Heretic can be, but thats generally what you're going to be looking at with some of them.

Episode 1 has great archetecture, but bad combat. Just like with Doom 1, you can get most of the weapons pretty early in E2 (if you can find the secrets,) so that should help you get a good idea about how they feel. As for enemies, it keeps gradually adding more that fill different niches, and the boss tier enemies have pretty interesting attacks (they "choose" which attack to use, instead of just sticking with the same thing every time you're in view.)

By itself it's probably not going to completely blow you away, but there are a lot of interesting things to appreciate in it. There are also a good chunk of gameplay mods that are compatible with it like Guncaster, Samsara, Heretical Doom, etc that can change up the weapons and/or monsters behavior a bit if you're still not feelin it after a few episodes.

I would say to at least play through Episodes 1-3, since that was the base game, then if you don't like it, try it with mods or move on.

>Wolfenstein RPG
reposting this
All the id RPGs are fucking based. Carmack wrote the engine (over a weekend, if I recall correctly. He said he decided to finally check out gaming on cell phones and found them incredibly lame so decided to make something himself) and it was clearly inspired by the type of predominantly Western classic first person dungeon crawler PC RPGs that Carmack had played back in the day. He said he decided to go with the style he did as a way to design within the limitations of the platform instead of making a shitty half assed platformer that plays like shit or whatever.

There were 5 using the engine. Doom RPG, Doom II RPG, Wolfenstein RPG and Orcs & Elves 1 and 2, an original traditional fantasy IP made for the engine.

You can find all the iD RPG games and an emulator to play them here. I run them on my Android phone with J2ME Loader and it works great. There's an onscreen keypad for the buttons. If you want to play on PC just use the Windows version of J2ME Loader.

All the iD RPG games are in this archive:

I reckon most typical pwads should try to at least make Skill 1/2 comparable to Doom 2 or TNT on UV, so that newer players can have a mode to fall back to if even Skill 3 is too much.
Only exception is slaughtermaps, or other niche types of hard wads, where Doom 2 UV style of gameplay balance simply wouldn't work without completely butchering the map. So in such cases, probably better to use Plutonia Map32 or whatever "easy" example map of niche hard gameplay as a base for skill 1/2 gameplay.

Finally beat Valiant recently, UV pistol starts no saves, except 2-3 levels where I saved. I've been unsure of what to play next, but now I know: Plutonia in 320x200 resolution. I've never played it before and I think I'm good enough to beat it pistol starts no saves and I want to play it Just Like It Was Played™ hence the resolution. I would use Chocolate Doom but I like my vertical recoil pitch option because it reminds me of Doom 64 and the weapon feedback feels great so I'll use Crispy, but low-res mode in 4:3 to mimic Chocolate. Also I wanna test out the Plutonia MIDI pack with the RLNDGM soundfont and the new SC-55 soundfont above. Few weapons are as satisfying as the Ingram MAC-10. Funny thing is, the real one is probably faster and even more inaccurate. Also this game is surprisingly easy on the hardest difficulty. I had a rough first playthrough because I unironically was trying to play the game like Doom, just running into room and strafing enemies, but if you chill out and peek corners in 3rd person and use your bullet-time, it becomes pretty easy to blast through without saves on even the hardest difficulty since it doesn't change very much

Let's say I want to make and sell (for money) a low-poly oldschool FPS.
What engine should I use that won't run like shit on older hardware, while still allowing for decently complex levels?
GZDoom would work weird with low poly 3D since enemies will only turn at 45 degree angles and IDK how to get around that. Plus any room-over-room geometry very significantly impacts performance.
IIRC Quakespasm can't be used commercially
Darkplaces runs like shit on older hardware
Unity and Unreal 4 run like ass and are bloated with a lot of overhead shit you can't disable (while technically you can in Unity, it requires rather expensive PRO subscription)
GODOT is even more expensive than Unity.
No idea about Xash3D have to look into it. Haven't seen anything on it that didn't immediately screamed "HL mod LMAO" to me.

Open Source means you can look inside and modify for your own perusal. But that does not mean you can sell your modifications, or games you made with them.
The intelectual property and commercial rights still belong to id Software
The license Doom and Quake engines were released does not allow for commercial use, which is why it was a big deal for Darkplaces and GZDoom to be entirely rewritten to allow them to use different GPL license that allows commercial use.

GZDoom went full commercially viable GPL at some point before 4.0 (don't remember exact version), you dont have to take anything out of it, except maybe FluidSynth, but that's just a DLL, delete it and game won't show it.

Modifying its code to allow monsters to turn at angles different from 45 degrees (which is important if you want to use 3D models, as even low-poly quickly starts to look like shit with restriction like this) would be rather difficult, as IIRC it's tied to decorate, ZScript and whole lot of other shit that would also need rewriting and that's a can of worms im not ready to open

This is somewhat incorrect.

The Doom engine source code was under the DSL, a non-commercial license, from its original release in 1997 to when it was re-licensed in 1999 to the GPL.

The Quake engine source code, on the other hand, was never under a non-commercial license, and has been licensed under the GPL since it was released in 1999.

Most modern Doom source ports, except for certain ports which still continue to use DSL licensed code, like ZDaemon, are licensed under the GPL or compatible licenses, and are perfectly okay to use for commercial use cases.

Quakespasm, at least from what i can tell from the Sourceforge page, has no commercial usage restrictions either.

>> No.7232651

>>7232558
Doom engine and Quake engine both have GPL releases, actually.
Doom engine did initially have a different "Doom Source Code License" release that prohibited commercial use, with many early source ports using such license before the GPL re-release happened. GZDoom used to use it because of trying to stay inline with ZDoom, but once ZDoom was discontinued, Graf was free to clean things up for GPL. ZDaemon and Zandronum still use this old license.
Quake engine has always been GPL since its source code release.

Today I learned that GZDoom doesnt actually have a compatibility setting that enables ghost monsters bug from vanilla. "Crushed Monsters can be resurrected" simply just toggles if crushed corpses can be resurrected at all, and doesnt actually have anything to do with the ghost monsters bug. Which honestly, makes this setting pointless.
There does exist a flag to enable it for automatic fixes, so that if you play a historically notable level relying on the bug, like Icarus map24, it should work as intended. But thats as far as GZDoom supports it.

To me, half-life seemed like a fusion between making IRL places as DN3D maps, and Quake plus reloading. Half-Life doesn't have the cancerous semi-slow movement of CoD, nor is it realistic in any sense of the word. Half-Life is a weird middleground.

BTW, why is this the only proper game for goldsrc (i.e. besides CS:CZ which is pretty much a 'story mode' for an olnine-only mod, and the two HL addons) that was ever released? Was the HL engine really that shitty for developing compared to Unreal's or q2 / q3Arena engines were?

Puzzle FPS before its time. And no physics.

Unironically in the Duke type arsenal.

Yes HL is a semi fps, its more about puzzles, a broken elevator, jumping on ledges, fighting in precarious terrain, I think maybe they wanted to go horror and make enemies super strong so Gordon would have to resource constantly to sniping, trip mines, those alien distraction thingies etc.

The best memories I have of half life is making the soldiers fall into my traps, and vice versa them trapping Gordon multiple times, with improvised explosions, tanks and barricadesthat felt threatening, ninja assassins etc.

The game was a bit too early for its ambition, but thats it, its the world\military\even aliens trying to trap Gordon, and gordon outsmarting and using traps instead.

Why did Id or Bethesda or whoever was behind Q2RTX ever decide to change the model for the railgun? I get that the models in general had to be remade or touched up so it's not a straight rip of low poly models that'd otherwise look "bad," but why would you completely change, and in this case completely fuck up, the original designs for any of them (at least the actual physical shapes of said models, not counting textures or anything else), let alone one of the most recognizable weapons in not only this franchise, but gaming in general? It's shit like this that I have honestly no idea what was going on in the devs' heads, cus it's not like the original railgun's design would've driven away zoomers that wanted to check out this revamped version of an old game, or that it would've otherwise affected the marketing of Q2RTX at all. Plus having a completely different model does nothing to show the graphical capabilities of the port at all; any shmuck could've made a similar model in any other source port, not to mention also the fact that a new model with completely different geometry would be any more "RTX-y" if that makes sense.

Monster design was largely a group effort ideas-wise, Bobby Prince did the music and sound, and would give an idea or two and provided some of his interpretation, Sandy Petersen is a huge Lovecraft nerd and pitched in a lot of his ideas, and then you've got Tom Hall, Shawn Green, and John Romero, all coming up with or altering/developing concepts here and there.
Adrian Carmack would do a huge chunk of the hard work on them though, sculpting and posing clay models (Zombies/Doomguy, Baron, Cyber), then him and Kevin Cloud would digitize them on a rotating stand and a video camera.

Some monsters were also drawn by hand, like the Imp and Cacodemon, which was time consuming, and as it turned out, sculpting clay onto those wooden pose dolls you can find in art-stores (which are somewhat rigid and limited), and then shining a bright spotlight on them to light them (warming up the clay), they would not seldom break between poses, see pic related, which necessitates frequently repairing them, causing visual inconsistencies if you're not meticulous. Because of this, they hired Gregor Punchatz, a movie special effects guy with a studio of his own, he'd sculpt monsters after Adrian's designs, then cast those to create moulds, which he'd use to create latex skins, then dressing those skins over poseable steel skeletons and painting on detail. You'll see those guys later (assuming you're playing for the first time).

These latex-steel models were very consistent and easy to pose, and also had a good Hollywood look to them, so that worked out very well, though Gregor may not have accounted quite for detail vs. resolution like Adrian did with his clay models (looking at how simple pic related's face is), so sometimes a lot of fine details disappeared at the comparatively low resolution, requiring a bit of tweaking in post to make up for that. Gregor's dad, Don Ivan Punchatz, was also a very accomplished poster/cover illustrator, and they hired him to paint Doom's cover.

What do u mean? All sourceports can read dehacked files. It's just weird he chose not to include his dehacked file inside the wad itself like normal people do.

In the past, you used to have to use separate dehacked files to change things in the game for your custom maps. Eventually, sourceports learned to read these things while they were baked inside the wad itself, so old wads have separate dehacked files, while new ones do not, with one important exception: new vanilla-compatible wads will have the dehacked file both inside and outside of the wad so that modern ports just need the wad and the original .exe can still be patched with the dehacked file

The models look great, anim is a little "floaty".

One of the main reason IMO Doom is so great or addicting is while using certain mods its probably the most responsive and reactive FPS games I've personally ever played. Take something like PB 3.0 that has some the best animations out of any mod but the dichotomy of having such fast gameplay and being locked in a 3+ second animation really kills it for me.

I remember being hooked on ARMA and one instance where I was 3 command menus deep trying to fiddle fuck with something, then being shot at and in that moment realizing how important removing what I would consider gameplay "bottle necks" can actually be. Thats why COD or hell even Far Cry works so well and will have virtually infinite appeal. As much as I love New Vegas I basically can't even look at that game anymore (ungodly amount of hours). There are moments where the animations breaking, input delay, lack of feedback, hit detection etc. all combine to be a cluster fuck of jank.

I would even go as far as to say thats one of Hideous Destructors biggest flaws, once again, IMO being locked in an animation and not being able to switch/stop or manipulate it any way.

It is you who don't know shit, anon. Have you actually tried any of them on actual hardware?
The very graphic pipeline they use runs a lot of overhead shit even if you don't need it, and it takes a heavy toll on performance. They are HEAVILY CPU-bottlenecked.
Due to that, the difference between high poly and low poly environments/models is fairly low, since it's the GPU that crunches polys.
>but muh mobile
Uses small mostly static scenes with minimal enviromental interactivity, heavy LOD/occlusion culling and has to pause to load every other scene change.

There's a reason owners of older hardware heavily dislike both UE4 and Unity - low poly games that use them run no better than high-end games on same engines, while if being made on older engine with same visuals they would've run 5 times faster.

Both Amid Evil and Dusk work "fine" on modern PCs, in a sense that they put out decent FPS... While high poly games like AC Odyssey or Watch Dogs 2 give about the same FPS while being miles above in complexity.
On older hardware however (using G630, 8 Gb RAM, GTX 660 ti as a baseline of "old shit", which is poretty generous) they run at 30-40 fps, when that same hardware runs Skyrim SE or Warframe at 60.
Shit like Nightmare Reaper or Project warlock that have Wolf-tier environments run at similar ~40 fps, which is NOT FINE in my opinion for games of their "complexity".

Picrelated: Graven, an UE4 game that has ~Quake 2 level graphics while running geting 45-65 on i7 with 1080 Ti - Same as Borderlands 3 on same engine (and its miles above in complexity). (meanwhile AC Odyssey runs at 80+ and even unoptimised shit like Cyberpunk 2077 gets ~45-50 on med-high)

Don't think it would've been able to fit 32 levels.
