Update 2: the first map I tried started me out in a near pitch-black room and I immediately fell into an unmarked pitch-black pit. There's a bunch of other low quality threads atm that would've been common back then too, but the board speed meant they didn't dominate entirely. Most of the ones I mentioned are clickbait-tier. Begging a question or implicitly pitting one fandom against another. I thought it was the definition of Nothing Special, the weapons aren't interesting, the enemies aren't interesting, and the levels aren't interesting. The combat is simplistic and dull, a bit like Wolfenstein 3D but without the cartoony charm, and the resolution is tiny so you can't see shit.

There are obvious awards. Your Ancient Aliens, Eviternities, Buttsexes. This year the absolute top shelf was a bit more shaky, but no one contensted Abandon, Bastion of Chaos, Faithless or Mutabor. Then you fill out the "oh, of course", which was Syringe, Running Late 2 and Antaresian Reliquiary (seethe in hell).

Then the real work starts. You're at 7 musts, and you're working with like 20 potential HMs, because those need to be culled too. Interestingly enough, Rowdy Rudy was a very fast lock-in, but there was a lot of haggling involving Ar-Luminae, Mapwich 2, 3iaC and I believe G&G.

Basically the "6-15"th tier is fluid until late into the decision making. It's not easy to decide "the last cacoward" and "the first HM', even if we don't mark them as that. At one point I also threatened to cancel the DM awards and that'd shift DoomWare into the main awards.. well, a fun mind experiment.

There's definitely a tinge of it. The game skates by on Caleb, the cultists, and the aesthetics/tone. The gargoyles and ghouls who fly in the air for 30 seconds at a time before descending so you can kill them is embarrassing. The zombies are absolutely not a threat ever, but at least the fat guys are fun to kill because that's true in any medium. Episode two was really hit and miss, like that one room with the gray gargoyle which you can totally just leave alone and exit the level. These fire dogs are a check to make sure you saved enough tesla ammunition, episode two's boss on Well Done has two of the spider bitch, but killing one will end the episode. How did that get past testing?

I don't think Blood is bad in any sense of the word, but I can definitely say it's a touch overrated. When you're fighting cultists, it's the best parts of Half-Life's Surface Tension or F.E.A.R.'s moment to moment gameplay. Everything else feels like the devs threw up their hands and wanted to move on.

For playing Half Life? Didn't encounter any errors so far. The nice thing is that it requires only 3 dll files to run from, so you can shrink down your half life folder to just the .exe, 3 dlls and the 'valve' folder containing the game assets. Also you'll get more fps running xash compared to base half life. The Half-Life.7z from the Win98 link in OP is running on the latest official xash release by Uncle Mike (0.99).
There's a continuation (forked) of it called 'Xash 3D FWGS 0.20' but it gave me worse fps than the last official Xash. There's also the experimental XT release if you want to mess with the technical aspects of the engine.

Not to say either one is superior/inferior, but I wonder if you could make a game that looks exactly like a Build engine game to a T with Unity or Unreal? Obviously a different aesthetic, but Dusk was made on the former engine and that almost looked exactly like it was an old FPS game engine from the mid-late 90s on a modern source port. I don't know much about programming, but for the first two things I would assume you'd have to do some real code fuckery to make them feel as "non-Unity or Unreal" as possible if that makes sense. Anyway, the big problem with roster is that it lacks those enemies that dominate the encounters, unnerving you with their very presence and making you focus them above all. Quake is amazing, but the boss battle is fucking shit, in classic id fashion. You don't even get to mutilate the thing. E1 boss was more of a boss than this. All they had to do was place a bullet sponge in the middle of an arena and make it chuck projectiles or some shit. Was really hyped after collecting all the runes. Didn't feel like a fight against an eldritch horror at all. It wasn't a fight, but an execution. Even Icon of Sin was better, and it was shit.
10/10 game, beautiful models, OST by fucking NIN, some really scary moments, great gameplay and map design.
Fuck spawns, holy shit, these things can go suck a dick. The last levels are hell, had to save.

I am replaying Max Payne 2 and it's a LOT of fun.

I did a continuous playthrough recently but I didn't enjoy it as much because I felt I was forced to savescum too much because of all the ambushes. But I am re-playing the game in New York Minute game-mode, which is basically like Doom pistol starts - you lose all your guns, but for me the important thing is you restart with 100% health, so you can blast your way through levels and not worry about low health biting you in the ass later, which is what happened to me repeatedly in my continuous playthrough. New York Minute is a speedrun gamemode but all that changes is you can see your time for each level, and replaying the game this way is super fun because playing without saves is funner in general. Also you can skip all the shitty empty sections and just grind the fun sections, pic related. Part 2, Chapters 2-6, are REALLY good. You can launch the game with the -developer parameter to unlock all game modes right away if you want

Ye I know, I actually thought it kinda looked like a uterus before I made it less uterus-y with the top left-middle bits but those look like a nutsack. Eventually the "shaft" will have caves off to the sides, and when the outlet for the river is done it'll be a sort of wide shallows into more caves. I'm in the air as to whether I want a ruins-jungle type thing, or if it's going to lead into a nestled in long overrun techbase partially integrated into the cave network.

Well, imagine you are 1-shot from death and there are no health pick-ups for the next few sections. You are forced to save after each encounter, otherwise you replay these same few sections over and over and over until you play perfectly and get the health. It just feels icky having to play perfectly for a few seconds, then save, then load over and over until you beat the next section, just because you are low on health.

No-saves pistol-starts is so cool because while you are learning the level, you can do well and get really far and die, then, on your next try, you totally fudge a section that you previously mastered because you weren't focusing. It feels like an extra layer of chaos/randomness since you won't get the exact same experience twice in a row, unless your run is already optimized which takes a while
