I think what I got was the original Ultimate Torment & Torture entry from 2000 (updated 2006). Never played these, but I guess if I ever were get into them, the first one would be a suitable place to start.

Uses Quake textures all over, looks nice as a result. It's a ZDoom mapset, uses stuff like underwater and what not, uses silent teleporters for fake room over room stuff. Music track is some .mp3 or another, which is making me TENSE AS FUCK, because it's the same intense tension shit constantly, I'm pretty well armed and armored after a while but I still feel like Tormentor is going to lock me into a tight space whenever with some ACS scripted trap, which he kind of does, but the music makes the tension worse, so I'm crawling through the level carefully as shit. I think the music would have worked better if it had some more sections to it at times, so it wasn't so constant.

Decent challenge overall, starves you on ammo a bit but never to the extreme, though there was a part with a +STEALTH Arch-Vile, which is pretty bullshit (I played on HMP as it promised it'd be intense, overall seems it's about right for me). I'll have to go back to it in a bit, maybe I'll load up some alternative music or something, which doesn't put me on constant edge.

I'm having some trouble with HudMessage. I'm trying to make it that the player activates the wall and a description pops up with the title in BIGFONT and the paragraph in SMALLFONT. That screenshot reminds me about the stuff I did when I was younger (~15-20 years ago). Made my own Quake/Quake 2/Half-Life level renderers and from there, my own little engines. Tried everything from Quake BSPs to plain octree+portal engines. Even made my own level editor (that was garbage, but worked) for a pure portal engine. After Doom 3 was released, I wrote my own tiny vector GUI rendering system. Good times.

If only spare time wasn't so rare luxury these days, I'd do it all again because it was fun.

The companion AI is what makes an otherwise meh game into a bad game.

If you use the unofficial 1.3 patch that allows removing companions from the game, it becomes a lot more tolerable.
Episode 1 is still terrible, though, and that's a big deal for obvious reasons (it's the first thing you'll get to see and play). And that's the part of the game that was actually made by Romero himself, to add insult to the injury.
The other three episodes, that were NOT touched by Romero, are a lot better, E3 being the best.

I remember there was a bug in Episode 3 in v1.0. It was some form of electrical trap that was obviously supposed to kill you, but someone had forgot to add a negative, so instead it gave you massive amounts of health.

The way that Rise Of The Triad is an extremely arcade-like game, counting score, featuring items which exist only for score, having extra lives, an emphasis on powerups, how weapons themselves are like powerups in that you most of the time pick one up and then use it up and it's depleted, to then go back to your infinite ammo base weapon, or to find another powerful weapon to use up.

Just finished the Quake Xmasjam 2020. Found it terrible, easily the worst iteration of any of these holiday jams, and a major downgrade from the 2019 edition.

My main gripe with it is that way too many levels involve fighting very powerful custom enemies, with huge splash damage, in cramped areas. It would still be doable if adequate amounts of ammo, health and weapons were provided to the player, but that isn't done.

Not him, but what exactly does that mean/entail, that Unity is the front end? I always just assumed that Bethesda/Id/whoever made the port took the code from the original games and put it into Unity with some tweaks for the same of compatibility with it. Even then though, I don't understand why they used it instead of just using a premade source port (e.g. GZDoom or whatever) with the creator's permission and tweaked that for optimization for consoles, unless of course the source port's license doesn't allow for it for some reason but I doubt that'd be the case anyway. Keep in mind I don't know anything about programming, but the only possible reason for using Unity is for that fancy Doom 2016-esque credits sequence where it's a bunch of floating text and player/enemy sprites posed on one of the maps in a freeze-frame kinda style. Correct me if I'm being retarded at all, though.

Honestly, I kinda wish we'd get soundfonts that more focused on improving/enhancing the windows default soundfont, rather than trying to be as accurate as possible to a real sc-55 (which is frankly impossible).
I've found that a lot of these SC-55 soundfonts tend to (mostly) sound fine with the stock midis of Doom, Duke or whatever. But once you delve into community made midis, most of which having been made with the windows default midi soundfont in mind instead of involving actual sc-55 hardware, you begin to notice that some things don't always translate well. Probably doesn't help that these soundfont makers tend to exclusively listen to midis from official games from the dos era when making tweaks, too.

I will clarify on my original take that people often overestimate how hard they can push Doom 3's combat. In a lot of circumstances, you'll have to use your ears and bait enemies into fights. Throw grenades before enemies can attack, stuff like that. Usually though, when you do have to fight head to head, it's best to either get up in their grill with the chainsaw/shotgun or sit a little further away and headshot them with the machinegun. the mid-range fights don't exist much until the latter half of the game.

The Doom 3 shotgun is a hitscan melee weapon.

It's literally meant to be used like the berzerk punch is used in Doom 1.

People dislike this change, but to be honest, making the Doom 3 shotgun have a better spread would make it completely overpowered. You would have no need to use any other gun the entire playthrough, especially with the extra headshot damage and tight corridors.

Medium range encounters are machinegun and grenade territory.

I think they wanted to do 94 Protons of /vr/, in reference to Plutonia.

My favorite idea, simply because of the name, is a vanilla-compatible megawad named 128 Visplanes of /vr/

As for stuff I'd like to see, I think the best custom map sets are ones with a theme and custom sprites/textures to go along with it. For example, Preacher.wad doesn't change any existing behavior, but the pistol is now a revolver, chaingun now a tommygun, plasmagun now a prayer book, BFG now a scepter. Additionally, custom dehacked monsters and weapons are super-cool. I'd love to see the return of the 2048 pistol, and new enemies like Ribbiks' turquoise cyberdemon with 1/4 HP.
