I'm trying to play an OOT romhack in retroarch, but the default control scheme is some retarded modifier bullshit where you have to hold down a trigger to use the c buttons. I'm playing it on an Xbox controller, and I want to map
> Y = C-left
> B = C-down
> RB = C-right
> LB = C-up
but I can't get it to work. Even after I try to set the C axes it doesn't work right. Is there any known fix for this?

Also, retroarch hate thread. How can this program be so useful and necessary, yet have such a flaming trash fire of a UI?

if retroarch is giving you trouble with the settings just use a different N64 emulator. ParaLLEl, Prject 64, and M64p all work well

Which is the best of these for OOT romhacks? Isn't Project 64 filled with viruses/malware?

Just go to the quick menu and go to controls and set them to what you want. What’s the big deal?

>> No.7219057

>>7219046
project 64 is open source, just download the official public release. Any will work fine, the romhack is just a ROM it'll run it like any other game. Though be warned all n64 emulators may have some inaccuracies and may sometimes like miss textures or some shit

Doesn't respond ingame. I can't map my C buttons in the menu.
>>7219057
Isn't there some accepted best, most accurate emulator nowadays, like mednafen for PSX?

>> No.7219068

>>7219046
lmao, no, that's some fud probably being spread by some FOSS faggot. P64 used to be closed source so, like a lot of software often intended to be spread towards chlidren and normies, a hacker might copy the installer and try to add a virus to it. If you downloaded it from the P64 website you wouldn't have this issue.

N64 emulation is not mature, there's no Dolphin-tier emulator for the system. Project 64 is still the best emulator.

the three I listed are the most accurate and mupen and parallel are basically the same accuracy wise. You won't have many issues

Why is 5th gen emulation so much worse than 6th gen emulation? Fuck, even 7th gen emulation will soon be better than 5th gen at the rate we're going.

>> No.7219127

Where are you having issues with specifically? I just went through the following steps and it worked perfectly:

>Plug in controller
>boot retroarch
>go to settings -> input
>map your controller if you haven't already
>save autoconfig, then save retroarch settings
>open core (I'm using parallel)
>open menu
>go to quick menu -> controls ->port 1 controls
>scroll down to which button you want to map to C-Up
>set it to C: Y+
>C-Down is C: Y-
>Right is C: X+
>Left is C: X-
>Save core settings

And now it's permanently set and works for me each time I boot a rom

this option if you dont want to use c buttons on a stick
it also fixes smash

>> No.7219164

You need to go to the control input, then you need to move manually, R button > it will display something like R trigger, you need to move till it shows R bumper or whatever names the XBOX controller has, then you need to save per game or default to the emu. The whole remapping thing doesn't work on the cores since they'll have their own settings.

Because hardware used to be unique. Later all shit just became cheap PCs.

I switch to Glide and the controls work normally, but now it has graphical bugs. Pic related. I hate 5th gen emulation. Every time I try to do it, there's always some problem or the other. Nothing ever just works the way it should. I might try the standalone Project 64 emu to see if that's any better. This is the right link, right? I don't want to get the one with the virus.

INB4 some retroautist calls you lazy for not liking retroarch's nonsense.
Just get a standalone emulator, especially for N64
>>7219073
There's no 'accurate' n64 emulator. A lot of relatively major stuff isn't really playable. I think this is because the n64 really doesn't have very many games worth playing, on top of the controller and architecture nonsense. The n64 exists to play ocarina of time and little else.

Which one? I just tried project 64 and the game wouldn't boot at all. Said it needed expansion pack or something.

This is terrible adbice. If there's one thing to use retroarch for, it's n64 emulation

You want to use the mupen or parallel cores using the parallel RSP, no standalone is even close

What is this retarded shit

In OOT you use c buttons for item switching. Just map the c-buttons to the d-pad. Yes you can't use it while moving unless you map the second analog stick to movement. You will be fine.

buttons way too tall
analog stick too close to buttons
generally cramped controller design
high gloss finish that looks awful to hold
