I think the only cute retro video game stories I have are me losing my shit at Yoshi's Island's graphics after getting a SNES, and the pokemon thing. Me and my sister wanted Pokemon Red for our gameboys and our mother was going to get it after work. She came home and said they were out and we were pretty bummed, but we opened up the bags our take-out dinner was in and there they were. We freaked out lol. Shame how massively ass the series is now, it used to be pretty magical stuff.

I got pokémon blue for christmas in 1999.

Few days later, one of the strongest storm to ever me my country hit. Major electrical failure in the entire country.
I remember playing Pokémon in the kitchen just next to the window to try and get some moonlight on the screen, which was incredibly fitting since in game I was in the cave that requires Flash.

In the late 2001? Waaaaaay out of reach for a middle class household at that time, and it was pretty rare too.
Not to mention, PIII rig was already kind of a high-end setup. Something like SS7 with a P1 MMX or even K6-2 (if you managed to find one) was a way more common solution (and even then it would cost you a little fortune).

If you we're living in a post-communist country at the time, your dad coulve done what my dad did. Let me explain :
>Germans(mostly the ones from the west) are pretty fucking rich
>They often throw perfectly functioning shit in the trash, just cuz they want something new, or cuz its slightly broken
>My dad would often go there, with his car, and bribe someone at the landfill like 20 euros, to let him scavenge the landfill
>Then, once he would fill his car with second-hand, working(or just easily-fixable) high-end technology, he would often find an entire car there, atach it to his main car, and also fill that
>Then, he would come back home, fix all that stuff, keep all the stuff that is better than ours, and sell the rest
I remember around 2004-2005, getting a free, super high end, corsair, gygabite stick of ddr2 memory, that ran at 675 Mhz. That was just an example

Christmas 1997 my Dad got me a Pentium Windows 95 machine. I was 8 years old, one of four, and the only one who took an interest in computers. Came with Quake, Tomb Raider 2, bunch of DOS games, but more importantly, a copy of Visual Studio 97 (*totally* legally of course). Changed my life, software developer now.

I wish I could find pictures of it. Once the pandemic is a bit less shit I'll look through old family photos to see if I can find any.

My dad pulled a Christmas Story on me when I was like 8. All I wanted for Christmas was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for PS1. When Christmas was all over my dad asked me if I got everything I wanted for Christmas and I sighed and said "yeah...I got everything" Then he said "Why don't you grab me the sports magazine from the couch" (we had one of those things on the couch you could lift up and store magazines in) and sure enough there it was. Spent the rest of the day throwing goblins.

I remember one year, my grandma and grandpa got me and my brother (they raised us) an entire couch full of Gameboy and Pokemon shit. Most of them were cheap third-party Gameboy accessories meant for the Gameboy Color (things like snap-on protective cases and pen lights) and I only had a Gameboy Pocket so most of it wouldn't fit, but I didn't want to say anything since I appreciated the thought. It turned out the Gameboy Colors were in some of the last boxes.

Now that I think back to it, I think that was my last real childhood Christmas. My brother and I were growing older, Grandpa's health began deteriorating, and the extended family ended up on bad terms with each other because of it, so we kinda stopped bothering. I'm glad I can remember the last one so vividly, just because of the Gameboy Color thing.

In 1997 I got a PlayStation. I lived in Bolivia at the time and our town wasn't dirt poor but it was working class.
