Do a shotgun like a Striker-12, where it holds 12 shells that can be fired in rapid succession, but then you still have to go through the process of loading every chamber one by one like the giant revolver that it is (the mechanism would wind itself as you turned it, so you wouldn't have to deal with that), as well as eject the last spent shell manually before loading the last new shell.

It would give you a lot of firepower very immediately when loaded, but then have a pretty long cooldown for a full reload. Partial reloads can kind of be done but you'd want to make sure to turn the cylinder the right amount so that you don't end up with a bunch of empty chambers before you get a live round.
At any rate, you essentially will not reload this gun while in the middle of combat 9 times out of 10, you will either have to switch to another gun, or run away to cover somewhere to refill the shotgun in safety.

Shitty single map wad. I think the opening room had the most detail in this map, as the rest of the texture usage was either lazy or sloppy. The level just tosses a bunch of low tier enemies at you, including a few Wolfenstein SS here and there. At one point, there was a door that required the blue key, but it must have been placed in an obtuse area, as I wasn't able to find it and I was unable to return to the previous area, so I just idkfa'd to the last room. 2/10.

There a pretty decently sized scene for Marathon mapping in the late 90s and early to mid 2000s thanks to Forge being a very good map editor. A lot of them are currently either not compatible with PC or use very old versions of AlephOne but on the bright side a lot of them are being ported to current AO builds. One of the upcoming big ones is a TC that was the equivalent of Mordred Ep2 until the creator decided to return to it and finish it for current AO builds. It's called Where Monsters Are in Dreams.

Tempus Irae is my favorite TC because most others have their head too far up their own ass with cheesy fan fiction. Tempus Irae barely has a story, and has a simple objective for nearly every single level (find manuscript, then find the teleporter, repeat). About them glitchy Mutants, it really seems weird that nobody at playtesting phase have noticed that Mutants have no cooldown for their -50hp leap attacks (but unlike the q1 Fiend it isnt telegraphed at all) and didnt discovered this bug where if they get stuck on the levels geometry during the lunge phase, they sometimes can accumulate multiple leap attacks midair, so touching them would seldom result in about 100~150 ammount of damage - only way to cancel this is to trigger the pain animation somehow (if this happens on hard+ youre basically fucked if cornered) - second worst enemy after the Parasite IMO

Quake 1 was a good game, but it's because id transplanted a tried and true Doom gameplay onto a revolutionary new engine. I mean, I get it, we like Quake, but would it have been such a big loss if we didn't got it the way it came out, instead getting something completely different, like it was planned originally? That game ultimately was beginning of an end for id, they fell into creative rut from which they would never crawl out. Quake 2 was forgettable. Quake 3 was Carmack betting on every wrong horse. Doom 3 simply could not keep up with competition. Rage crashed and burned. id should've stopped trying to pretend they're game developers after idtech3 and instead focus full-time on developing engines while letting Raven make actual games with them.

id was already struggling to keep up with the FPS industry at this point. As I said, Quake as FPS game wouldn't have been such a big loss - we would've still had Build Trilogy, Unreal and whatnot. And what most certainly wouldn't have been a great loss is Doom 3 - id game designers wanted to try something new at that point and make an MMORPG, but Carmack insisted on another FPS game, and it was another wrong bet.

When I played Doom 3 back in the day, my first thought was "This looks awfully like a Half-Life, not Doom". Then I got to monorail and yep, it was a fucking Half-Life.

Though I got to admit, the way the terminal screens worked in the game was really cool, too bad it didn't caught on. If it wasn't Carmack-era id, I would've assumed it's because they patented it like Namco did with loading screen minigames. But I guess it was just a gimmick no one really cared about to implement.

Something is a little fucky with the blockmap or nodes in the towers in the first section, because the chaingunners seem to disappear down into the floor somehow (yet they can easily still shoot you, annoyingly).

For being mostly pretty plain looking, the level does do a decent job with atmosphere, the weird space sky and the tense music does a lot. Klem (and other people) used this track quite a lot in later projects.

The screen terminals is an idea that Tom Hall had suggested as far back as the early days of Doom 1's development, and it was pretty damn cool to see it live in Doom 3. I actually think it's a pretty decent idea, and that's it odd that we haven't seen it used in more games.

If that was the rationale, that's honestly a really arbitrary difference because you're still manually interacting with an object, more, in Doom 3 you tend to 'catch' onto these displays while interacting with them, which usually takes a few seconds more than just going up to a big lever in Doom 2 and pressing the use key, which you can do in a hurry.
At least in Quake 1, the reduction was that you'd just bump into shit and that was that.

Doom 3 wasn't a failure at all though It sold 3 and a half million copies in 2 years. Quake 3 wasn't a failure either.
Quake 3 sold less well than Quake 1/2 or Doom 1/2, which is probably why Id went back to single player games, but it wasn't at all a failure either.
Rage wasn't a great success, but sold about as well as Doom 3. It just took them forever to make it after Doom 3. Overall not a loss.

I did have high hopes for Rage though. In the end the FPS gameplay was great, but the open world aspect was kinda lame. It should've been more like Deus Ex as far as exploration and such goes. The vehicle gameplay was kinda boring, and I feel like it detracted from the rest of the world. Like I remember walking into a camp of some sort and trying to hop on a rock to avoid some enemy fire and hitting an invisible wall and dying. I stopped playing at that point. Just cannot stand that shit. If I had been exploiting a collision idiosyncrasy or something it wouldn't have bothered me, but it was like a knee-high rock.
I still love the tech behind it.

Rage is a lot more fun if, when you get the shotgun, you spend all buckshot ammo you have and ever find on turning it into a repeating mini rocket launcher by making rocket shells for it. I never used the buckshot ever and the shotgun was extremely satisfying and fun for me.
