I'd agree with you there, but I didn't find the first Zelda all too cryptic.
The only part of the game that was actually unfair (by that, I mean there were no hints leading to finding it, no old man told you clues about it, and nothing stuck out about it) was this fucking part.
Everything else either stuck out (a lone bush somewhere, isolated rocks, rows of enemies in a small group) or was told to you (albeit with poor translation) by one of the old men or women.

I have no interest in Zelda games, never beaten one.
Never beat original mario.
I think all Original Megaman games are not fun. Of the Megaman X series I only enjoyed X5. I like all of the Megaman Legends games and the spinoff.

I never beat Secret of Mana, but I did get close.
I like Final Fantasy 7 more than any other FF, FF6 is a close second.

I do not like sonic 3 or S&K more than Sonic 2. I believe Sonic Adventure was one of the best Sonic games to come out.

I never beat Shadow of the Colossus, but it was a good game.
I don't like ICO.

I don't like Super Smash Bros, or Melee, but I loved Brawl.

While you can deduce (almost) everything on your own in Zelda without a guide, I still think that the hints are sometimes very vague even by video game standards. In the end you are forced to explore every single nook and cranny for secrets, which obviously has its own appeal and it's a great game for its time (I personally hadn't played the first Zelda until 20 years after its release and I enjoyed it) you can't deny that getting to the next dungeon at times took taking shots in the dark.

After finding myself getting stuck at least once in each dungeon and having to consult a walkthrough, I played through a solid chunk of Ocarina of Time using the walkthrough without trying to figure things out on my own.
Once I reached the Spirit Temple, I realized I wasn't getting the full experience so I dropped the walkthrough and attempted the temple on my own. I got stuck on the single easiest puzzle in the entire temple, gave up and checked the walkthrough for it, and I still feel intense shame over being unable to figure it out.

I've also never finished Majora's Mask. After getting killed by Gyorg at least a dozen times, I ragequit, and now in order to face him again I'd have to start the whole dungeon over, which I can't muster the willpower to do.

This. Legend Of Zelda is "Cryptic Stuff: The Game".

>>715709
I'd agree with you there, but I didn't find the first Zelda all too cryptic.
What about the flute opening the access to dungeon 8?

I played it one month ago "because" and the game felt EMPTY. I loved ALttP and OoT to the death for their environments, secondary characters,... here I just have empty plains full of enemies.

Granted, the game evolved from LoZ to the ALttP/OoT/whatever we have now, but I just didn't felt faced with an "epic adventure", the game just felt empty when other games far older were able to give a bette story.

Mario games have never been that interesting to me. They just feel like platformers that don't do anything wrong, ever, but there's no spark of genius there for me. Maybe it's because I had a Mega Drive and grew up with Sonic, so I'm only seeing them now that every game in the world has cribbed everything good about them and I've seen it all before, even though they're the originators.

And that, kids, is why you shan't emulate.

More seriously, it's a debate that comes back a lot on /vr/, old games having infos in booklets and stuff...but it just feels wrong: I've played a lot of great games and never felt lost. Even Super Metroid (or maybe I did Zero Mission first) the first time without any exterior help just felt "natural", I was exploring, getting a bit lost and inadvertly sequence-breaking (I did the poisoned underground of Castlevania Circle Of The Moon without getting the item to purtify the water) sure, but I just could go on. There, on LoZ, I was lost. And drawing a map of the overworld didn't help much.

Hold Right + A to give Mega Man a super jump. Note that jumping into pits with this will mean you won't die.
