I've moved onto X-Mapedit at this point, Its got mouse control in 3d view and a bunch of other neat stuff. I actually prefer Mapedit over Doom Builder now, you can do so much more with the Build engine once you get used to it's weirdness. Ambient sounds, sprites and scripting make a huge difference.

You started Build with Blood though, which has the most user friendly system to use of all big threee.
Although the disavantage of Blood is that it's still reliant on DOS based editors, which include dos Build's many glitches.

You can easily use ambient sounds and script with GZDoom though.
Build does have customizable sprites and more sector effects though.

I can certainly see the appeal, there's quite a lot that Build lets you do.

Just for the sake of being argumentative and autistic, I'll point out that with Boom format you can do some degrees of scripting, and DeHacked would let you add things like new sprites and ambient sound effects, with the new Extended DeHacked as seen in DSDA, you also aren't limited to just whatever frames and actors you can use and whichever of the stock ones you're willing to sacrifice.
UMAPINFO is also useful.
Of course, there's no slopes, and no walls going *KABLOOEY!* with the earth shaking all over.

UMAPINFO I think will add a few new abilities such as defining your own Doom 1 style map screen, but more importantly, GzDoom is going to be sharing functionality of UMAPINFO lumps with other sourceports, thus, it's a Universal Map Info.

PrBoom+ has been forked to have some upgrades like that (and someone already forked that fork into DSDA+), primarily for UMAPINFO, though it will not make use of every single of GzDoom's options for the format (it will plain skip/ignore lines which aren't relevant to it), it will let you do typical stuff like define sky and music, map order, exits and secret exits, episodes, text crawls, etc. All things which would be SUPER useful for just general Doom mapping, even just Vanilla or Boom mapping, but which has previously not been available outside of advanced sourceports.
Crispy Doom will also support UMAPINFO, as will Eternity.

The Steam version got a tiny update that allows you to select HD resolutions in the menu, the GOG version still only shows 4:3 resolutions (max 1600x1200). You can easily manually fix this by typing the desired resolution in the config file with Notepad. In any case, the version in the Win98 link in OP is already preconfigured to use 1920x1080.

Right? So you can basically just make a Vanilla/Limit Removing mapset but then use UMAPINFO to just tie it nicely together as say, a single 10 level episode with whatever secret levels you want, whatever skies you want, the use of 666 and 667 specials on whatever level you want, text crawls between every level, a custom intermission map screen, and a custom end graphic after the final level (maybe just a single screen, or a long one which slowly pans to one direction to show the rest of it). You don't need to attach any GzDoom strings or anything if you don't want to, and you can do Doom 1 style episodes without having to sacrifice any Doom 2 stuff.

UMAPINFO is definitely one of the nicest things to be added to overall Doom modding/mapping in years.

The Fiend still scares the crap out of me. It and the Knight enemy seem like the Pinky demon but done right. That's one of the many things I love about Quake, the fact that the monsters are actually intimidating and can take tons of punishment. Taking the shotgun, the workhorse weapon of Doom and relegating it to pistol status definitely felt like a statement, like these enemies are so tough that pistols are useless and the shotgun can only scratch them. Hell even the almighty super shotgun requires several shots to take them down, receiving double the power of the regular shotty it's still not enough. There wasn't any power fantasy of casually mowing down hordes of popcorn enemies, you actually had to battle with them. Having tougher and fewer enemies at once was the result of hardware limitations but it really improved the game and helped make it more unique.

I think the first quake takes inspiration more from the tabletop game than the original stories, while also prioritizing gameplay over story akin to doom. The game may not remain completely truthful its source material but the influence is clear if you know that game. I don't think it attempts cosmic horror, just normal horror. It gets called "lovecraftian" because at least 3 enemies and a few level names are direct references to Lovecraft stories which makes enough sense to me.

In the original story, the reason the dimensional shambler is described as wrinkly is because it's actually a man wearing the skin of one. I think the tabletop game misinterpreted this then quake took even more liberties with it. It may be inaccurate but it's still unambiguous. Here's the influence for the spawn enemy from the same book, 1988.

It's based if you like oldschool horde shooters with good graphics and smooth gameplay. The original Painkiller by People Can Fly is all you need (nowadays known as the Black Edition), it runs on their original PAIN engine whereas the re-releases run on the Unreal engine. According to the Steam reviews Hell & Damnation was decent, while the original still holds a higher score. The original one already has the physics/ragdolls which is a nice addition.

I guess that's a personal preference, the setting in which they play is very different. Serious Sam plays in colorful, wide open areas like plains and jungles while Painkiller lets you play in close confined spaces (they lock you in an area and some hordes will spawn near you). Painkiller has a more dark, gritty atmosphere (but also some humour, somehow it's fun to shoot monks with axes). Protip: you can find both games in the Win98 downloads section in the OP.

It's called Methods of Destruction and it eventually leaked, thanks to Romero leaked his copy through a friend (Sonic Mayhem had originally not wanted it released because he thought it wasn't as good as his later work). Personally I think it's much better than Reznor's soundtrack

Duke uses Effector Sprites and hitag and lotag to store information
SW uses a similar system but instead of using 2 tags it uses about 25.

Blood stores information in walls and sectors attributes directly, which is one of the thing they had to tinker Build's source for since it wasn't supported.
Once you know about a couple of hotkeys, the advantage of Blood's system is that verything is condensed into 2 menus, so everything is in one place, it's super fast ,and you have info about what you're doing in editor instead of relying on outside documentation for every single little thing.

Also, even the way effects work is easier. For instance you have one Z-Mover that can do everything and that it's, instead of having to rely on one Z-Mover that does ceiling doors, one Z-Mover that does something else, and again another. Also telling the Z-Mover to start and stop at this and that height is a simple process. Another good example is how simple it is to make double slide doors in Blood compared to Duke, and on top of that you have more control on their attributes.

Mapedit also has a couple of functions which make it more user friendly than base DOS Build, but these days that's beaten by Mapster32.

No, you should focus on finding out whether you are even able to do sprites. Look at fucking Freedoom, on which you are basing your entire work to begin with - after all these years, they still weren't able to replace all the sprites in a satisfactory manner, and they had way more people than you. Maps should be the least of your worries right now.

>> No.7217704

The biggest difference between HL and Marathon is that HL is heavily linear while Marathon is very open. The story is always present in HL through scripts and dialog while it's only present during the beginning and end of the levels in Marathon, making the whole narrative of the game way less intrusive. The whole terminal reading stuff also heavily works in favor for Marathon's whole aesthetic imo, the AIs feel way more special through text than through a voice.

The first well known tranny game dev, Dan Bunten (Danielle Bunten) regretted getting sexual reassignment surgery (which was done in the mid 90s, I can only imagine what that was like) and later said he could've lived a female identity with his dick and balls in tact just fine and should have reconsidered. He died not long after of cancer.

Also related sidenote, Rebecca Heineman actually credited John Romero for being able to see Bunten for the last time, only months before he did. Romero hosted a huge party/get together for old Apple II programmers at Ion Storms Dallas offices where he flew them all there and everything. Heineman and Bunten were two he flew out. Heineman was still Burger Bill then but said seeing him is one of the things that helped him finally decide to transition too.

As someone who uses GZDoom to make a standalone game, I implore you to shut the fuck up. GZDoom is okay if you want to make 2.5D FPS game, but 3D model support in it is held together staples and bubble gum, especially in case of animated models - working with them is a rectal dentistry, you are limited to vertex animation in old-ass formats that have no proper support in modern 3D software.

Actually, Romero IS Alf. He's extra salty about Lord Gaben making it big with modified Q1 engine, while he himself got Q2 engine on a platter and still fucked up royally.

Yeah, monster variety as in different attack patterns would be neat. Not really keen on tanky pinkies or whatever though.
My dream additions (I believe most of them are impossible without zscrip or something)
> A sniper-like enemy that shoots very powerful hitscan beam but telegraphs its attack moments before. Can be dodged by moving to the side.
> Super-revenant that shoots multiple missiles at a spread pattern. Ideally, rather than constantly steering projectiles should travel random distance and make sharp turn towards target, repeatedly.

That arachnoorb from Valiant is a pretty good addition to otherwise lackluster air force.

Honestly, I like flying brains more than OG cacos. Cacos should be smaller, have less HP and have faster firing rate. Ideally, they should also be able to strafe players, but it's beyong the capabilities of DEH.

Full-Auto shotguns like the AA-12 or Saiga-12 would be overpowered as fuck in a retro FPS. What would be an original way to nerf them while still keeping the punch of a traditional shotgun?

Do a shotgun like a Striker-12, where it holds 12 shells that can be fired in rapid succession, but then you still have to go through the process of loading every chamber one by one like the giant revolver that it is (the mechanism would wind itself as you turned it, so you wouldn't have to deal with that), as well as eject the last spent shell manually before loading the last new shell.

It would give you a lot of firepower very immediately when loaded, but then have a pretty long cooldown for a full reload. Partial reloads can kind of be done but you'd want to make sure to turn the cylinder the right amount so that you don't end up with a bunch of empty chambers before you get a live round.
At any rate, you essentially will not reload this gun while in the middle of combat 9 times out of 10, you will either have to switch to another gun, or run away to cover somewhere to refill the shotgun in safety.
