I'm supriszed Romero didn't step in to make Daikatana HD: Fixed edition. There's a core of a decent game in there you just need to fix it. Port it to the Quake 3 Engine maybe. Fix all the bugs. Get rid of the AI partner. Balance and tweak everything.

Do you know anything about John Carmack? He managed to drive off every founding member of iD with his fucking autism and inability to handle the fact that they needed him to keep their edge. Instead of recognizing that he wielded disproportionate power (and backing off to let the other legs of the famous Carmack-Romero-Hall tripod work their magic) he systematically retaliated whenever their creativity didn't jive with whatever programming shit he was currently on., first driving off Hall and then Romero.

I mean, for fuck's sake, this is a man who:

1. Had to nearly be held at gunpoint to add secret walls to Wolfenstein.

2. Thought nothing of disappearing for three weeks down the asshole of Florida somewhere in a motel to write one of the Quake engines (he told no one where the fuck he was, he's the head of the company at this time).

3. Decided at one point than "maximum efficiency" could only be achieved among his employees at iD by pitting their weekly performance against each other "Deathmatch Style". People _were_ fired over this, office morale plummeted (gee, I wonder why?).

4. Is a staunch advocate of the "objectivist philosophy". I have never met a self-proclaimed objectivist who was not an exploitative piece of hypocritical shit, much like its original founder Ayn Rand.

5. Likes Diet Coke. Who the fuck likes Diet Coke? Only goddamn aliens, that's who.

They had the perfect fucking tripod, man: Hall brings the lore, Romero brings the gameplay, Carmack brings the tech. Instead they let the entire enterprise become completely servile to whatever autistic shit Carmack happened to be on at the time.

Like it or not, Carmack's powerful autism shaped video games as a whole, his handiwork can still be felt today in stuff released nowadays.
I'll agree though, he should have chilled the fuck out because in the early days of Id they were fucking gods.

>1. Had to nearly be held at gunpoint to add secret walls to Wolfenstein.
Because he wasn't confident he could do it in a way that didn't look like shit. I think they should have been added anyway, but fact is he was persuaded by Tom and Romero's persistence and had it finished by the next time they were gonna ask him.

>2. Thought nothing of disappearing for three weeks down the asshole of Florida somewhere in a motel to write one of the Quake engines (he told no one where the fuck he was, he's the head of the company at this time).
I'm 99% he told people he was leaving for somewhere. Not that his presence at the time was doing much to drive the other parts of the development.

>3. Decided at one point than "maximum efficiency" could only be achieved among his employees at iD by pitting their weekly performance against each other "Deathmatch Style". People _were_ fired over this, office morale plummeted (gee, I wonder why?).
Wasn't in quite early on? I'm pretty sure Romero and even Tom were in on that arbitration.

4. Is a staunch advocate of the "objectivist philosophy"
Good thing he's not pursuing a political career.

>They had the perfect fucking tripod, man: Hall brings the lore, Romero brings the gameplay, Carmack brings the tech.
But that hardly worked out, basically only for Keen and I guess Wolfenstein, Doom's development made it extremely clear that this arrangement wasn't holding up, you could ask Tom himself about that.

Does this really need to be a repeated pasta, by the way?

>zero emotions

Not true, he just figured the emotions of others weren't of any significant importance to him, which is shitty, and can definitely be out of autism, but it's not a failure to understand them or anything like psychopathy, it's just extremely arrogant, arrogance magnified by a young man's ego being constantly fed by decades of exceptional success.
He definitely doesn't have that exact same world view today.

>>7209285
Read Masters Of Doom, even before there's any talk about him being kicked out or leaving there's things which make it glaringly obvious that Romero and Carmack were growing increasingly incompatible with each other, their egos had grown massive and their creative differences irreconcilable. As far back as Quake changing directions to become a shooter, Romero was already forming plans about leaving for more creative freedom (just as well Carmack was increasingly dissatisfied with Romero's performance).

He has talked about this in interviews. He doesn't tell anyone and cuts himself off from the internet in a hotel room. He may let one or two people know but that's not what he said. Robot Carmack that is devoid of emotion and interest in anything but code is a meme, as the original Quake was an NPC played by Carmack, he was the DM of the guys Dungeons and Dragons campaign (the same one that ended up invaded by demons which became an inspiration for Doom), he was this ultra bas ass Thor type super high level with a giant hammer that would show up very rarely to help the player characters out. He was part of some mercenary group that worked for a group called Justice, and that was the original plan for Quake: The Quest for Justice. Obviously that didn't happen but Carmack was into metal and D&D and horror movies and Nintendo and all the shit the other iD guys were. He was quite callous to others when he was younger and hard to deal with and he has acknowledged that and chilled out alot since then.

Very good post.

Just adding you can tell that Doom was going to be very souless before Romero and Hall got him to change his engine to facilitate features they wanted.
>got him to add more than just humanoid enemies
>got him to make levels more interesting than just wolf3d box mazed

Romero and Hall defenately couldn't have done doom without Carmack, like you said they were a team.

>>got him to make levels more interesting than just wolf3d box mazed
This part was really two-way, primarily between Romero and Carmack, the engine was going to be more advanced than Wolfenstein 3D, and when Romero decided that they should really be making much more abstract levels to show off the capabilities of the engine, Carmack (who had encouraged experimenting) was really impressed by what he was doing and loved that the levels made such extensive use out of its capabilities, he'd add features and Romero would suggest or ask for more, and they would work that stuff out a lot, back and forth.

Romero just carelessly breaking the limits of the engine with pic related forced Carmack to realize that the initial approach wasn't working. After implementing Binary Space Partitioning, the results would be not just a much faster and more capable engine, Romero would really show what the improved engine could do, which was more than Carmack could have dreamt of at that point in time.

but seriously its so fucking simple for Bethesda, all they have to do is call up Tom Hall and say: "Hey Tom, want to work on a new Keen game?" and he would happily make one for them. Hell they could even make it the canon "The Universe Is Toast" Keen game and say "from the original game dev!"
As long as it didn't look like mobile trash I and quite a few people out there would buy it. They could even use the original DOS graphics and I doubt fans would care, just look at the Crystal Cavers Remaster that recently came out.

Did Blade run on your system? I guess it's the game that gives the most 'trouble' to run. Idk really what else to add, it must be rewarding to add (if the game is on GOG for 1 dollar fully working, it's not really needed to fix it up). I guess that's why Max Payne 2 will help other people because it's not on GOG, and the Steam version doesn't run well, so i'll add it. I've been thinking of SoF2, NOLF 2, AvP2 as well, though it's more of the same. I'm soon reaching the storage limit for my Mega account so i'll need to make choices which game gets to be uploaded.
>>7209058
Really? DRM free? That doesn't happen often on Steam, unlike GOG where it's always DRM free. Edit: i just checked and it's also available on GOG, so yeah i guess you're right. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact it runs on the opensourced DarkPlaces Q1 engine and DRM would be unethical in this case? I hope it will still be DRM free when the game is out of early access.

Ideally I was hoping that there was an archive of older versions out there so that I can try out as many as possible for comparison. More recent versions give me a weird issue where it'll just randomly "skip" over a few frames every once in a while. It's a massive pain in the ass and it didn't used to do that back in the day. So as many older versions that are available as possible would be great.

Ah tell yuh huwath:
Parallel threading, extremely fast loading times, architecture that makes UE obsolete, incredible support for deep gameplay mechanics that will scale really well across hardware (see Nintendo Skwish's Eternal), etc. It's finally a full and real game engine, not just a showcase for a single piece of graphical technology like every engine were in the past.

If he were to return to first person shooters, something unique would be nice. A new setting, some new interactions. Focus on gameplay over graphics. Empire of Sin looks nice enough, but in the end something fluid and with visual clarity is far more important than pushing polys and shaders...
Anyways. Even if he falls back into his doom days and does a gzdoom engine game, he could probably implement some modern game design pipelines... Anyways. We'll see. It's not like theres any reason he couldn't get a small team working on a game focused around snappy fun.

>Fix boom autoswitch behaviour (in some cases running out of ammo forced a specific weapon swap)

You'll notice in the 2017 demo you posted from MrZzul (Killer5) that whenever he's shooting the BFG and runs out of cells, he'll switch to the super shotgun for a moment, and then typically switch to the rocket launcher or something. This is not voluntary. In complevel 9 (boom), there used to be a bug where the game forces specific switches like that and you can't override them. That has since been fixed, so that when your BFG runs out of ammo after shooting, during the weapon switch you can hold or press the weapon you actually want to come out and it will obey you. So instead of the annoying behavior you can witness in that demo where the switch is out of the player's control, it's now under your control.

I don't know actually, that's an interesting question. I would assume there's some safeguard against that somewhere, since DSDA people are very careful with preservation of demos and stuff. You could test it out by recording a demo in the old prboom w/complevel 9 where you hold the rocket launcher key when forced to autoswitch from BFG to SSG, and then load the demo in DSDA-Doom and see what happens.

It's definitely not something that can be applied universally, though I'd say for the direction Doom was taking, which was more than anything focused on exploring dark bases and hell with repeated bursts of fast action, adding lots of narrative stuff and characters isn't really very necessary. In fact, I think part of Doom's lasting appeal is that the story is really very light in its presence, which gives the player a lot of room to interpret it and fill in the blanks with his imagination, be that just during gameplay, or for making his own content for the game.

Having just skimmed through Tom Hall's design document (Doom Bible) today though, there's definitely some interesting ideas in there however, and one wonders how the game he had envisioned would have turned out. It's not strange that multiple people have tried their hand at creating something like it, one way or another. It's also interesting just how much little details were lifted from it and showed up in other games, not just ones he worked on, but also games he never did. He was fired before the first game was finished, the majority of his ideas ditched, yet some of them crop up here and there in later Doom games.

Avp 1 (1999) did not suffer from that imo (Rebellion's in-house engine) and was pretty smooth all around. I would place the avp 1 engine more in line with the Quake and Unreal engines in terms of feel/movement. Netcode also seemed better. Somehow though it always seems that people prefer 2 over 1.

>arch-vile falls through the floor sometimes
Actually, I fixed the problem with the Arch-Vile falling through the floor, there was something that was fucked with the blockmap around that pit. Since I had no idea what was really causing it (it looked normal in the Node Viewer), I simply shrugged, then merged all the sectors to pave over the spot with the surrounding healthy sectors, then using screenshots I did my best to replicate the hole, pillar, and switch inside the pillar, as closely as I could.
If you look closely on the map you first sent in, and the final one, you might be able to spot some subtle differences with some linedefs, but I think I got it down.

Anyway, sometimes the level editor can fuck up and cause things like that for no apparent reason, and if it happens, the best you can really do is merge the sectors in question with surrounding sectors which are normal, then start over with that part.
If you suspect a sector is fucky somehow, what you can do is to turn down the grid size in Doombuilder, then carefully drag some vertexes/vertices around and see if the sectors turn into a void, if that happens, something is fucked and you gotta try to either Undo back before it got fucked, or if you can't, do as I said earlier, restart the construction on that part.

I ended up learning a lot of this stuff as I went during summer. Thankfully, glitches like these happen a lot less with 2020 era editors than it does with 1994 era editors.

I like the old school Invasion with a lives system. Complex Invasion has the "reinforcements" system, which is a bit better than lives since you can get more reinforcements by progressing, but the old Invasion maps have a lot more spectacle going on.

Complex Doom is always a good time, but there hasn't been a single type in a long time. You've got a million different versions of CD, then there's Complex Clusterfuck with a million different versions of that.

Ghouls vs Humans was a lot of fun in its heyday. /vr/ minigame servers gave me lots of fond memories. Ditto for /vr/ Cyberrun servers.

They're only bad if you have the Lost Soul limit disabled.
Speaking of which, I really wish the limit was changed to no longer count pre-spawned Lost Souls rather than removed entirely in source ports.
The main problem with the limit was that including both Lost Souls and Pain Elementals in the same map ran the risk making the the Pain Elementals harmless.
But the complete removal of the limit also created another problem where maps can potentially become outright flooded with lost souls, to a point of throwing ammo balance out the window.

Yeah, because nobody accounted for the exponential increase in development time (or Romero's changing attitudes/work ethic), Quake becoming what it is was an emergency solution (and a pretty good one, all things considered).
If they had afforded themselves more time, they could have done it. Perhaps Carmack admits to everyone "Hey, this engine is actually busting my balls, maybe make another expansion for Doom 2 while I figure this out (because I will), and then we'll get back to making Quake, mm."

They certainly had all the cash they needed, Doom was raking in fat ducats so the company certainly wasn't going under, and they could probably have squeezed a bit more money out of Doom in the meantime, but on the other hand, they also had GT Interactive publishing for them, and Ron Chaimowitz probably wanted his shiny new product sooner rather than later, and Romero was certainly not making all the right priorities at the time.

I trust his opinion on deathmatch, and if the game overall is "Not bad." after patches and not dealing with the AI, I could see the multiplayer being pretty sweet.

The Lost Soul limit is already there on Doom (Strict) compatibility. Fire up Doom 2's map09 and observe the harmless Pain Elementals at the start. Also, the criteria for Lost Souls being limited or not by design is simple: Vanilla/Limit-removing - 21 Souls max. Boom or any other advanced format - no limit.
