It is a bit too dark indeed. You did a lot of brightly lit decorations which is good, but not all of them help because some are above my and the monsters' head. The red door seems like the worst offender, the key pillar is not visible.

Pretty nice map overall, I died at the very end and cheated to resurrect because I forgot to save, but otherwise it's not too hard or too easy.

To the anon from last thread who posted your map, I got around to play it today. I liked it very much, no real strong criticism that hasn't been brought up. I thought the darkness was fine due to the light you cast through the rooms (good job on the lighting btw). This room was my favourite, I liked the deep blue colour scheme and the anticipation of the trap. I feel like this fight could have been even more claustrophobic since it's the climax of the map (maybe one more pinky). I found 4/5 secrets and was reasonably satisfied with it, getting the secret berserk when revisiting the start was very nice for the pinkies that get unleashed. Great use of space, I feel like there's a lot in this map despite how compact it is. 4.5/5.

I got Keeper of the Seven Keys 3 (Disc One) (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/j-l/keeper3).). A GZDoom partial conversion based off of an album by Helloween (I don't listen to power metal so excuse my ignorance). It's based around a hub map as seen in pic related. It uses the author's own variant of Brudal Dood, which I found kind of unfortunate. Some of the custom enemies were cool but I can't say this made me like Brutal Doom any more than I already do. I went through one map (Pleasure Drone) and found the layout to be really well designed, the health balance was fucking inane though. I didn't see a single health pack the entire time although I think I grabbed a few without noticing, it led to a very corner-peeking kind of playstyle that wasn't very fun. Pretty well put together from what I played though, 3.5/5

It's a boat map! A topic of recent interest, but this one's from 1995, and rather than making a quaint exterior, it's mostly just the interior of the boat, which I think was a good call for the time. It's pretty good, as far as non-abstract spaces in Doom go. Progression's not very clear on the first level, but the second level has some nice sector furniture, and the fighting is decent all around.

Hey, so I wanted to post something interesting I've found.
If you're familiar with Touhou, you know it's known for having pretty good music. It turns out, it's creator, ZUN, released MIDI versions of some of the older games' music on his old website. Mind you they DEFINITELY don't sound that doom-y, even with Doom's sound font (note: using gzdoom's sf2 file combined with the command line version of fluidsynth to listen to these right now). Some could probably be made to sound more doom-y if the instruments were switched around though. (namely【 少女綺想曲 ~ Capriccio 】, could probably switch the main instrument from the weird violin-ish instrument to an electric guitar to get something nice).
Still, they might be useful for niche maps, or if you want to make a map with a different feel I guess (or for the creator of Touhou doom, maybe).

It's all in japanese, but should still be navigable.
The main stuff is under the red banners (except for the first red banner, that's just an mp3 version of two tracks), which include midi tracks from the first 5 touhou games. The first blue banner under the mp3s is just a "recently uploaded" section, so ignore that. The other 2 blue banners are a couple lesser known games he worked on at the time. Finally, the yellow banner I believe has some songs from his first stand alone album.
Side note: Some songs come with an _8p file. The _8p version seems to play better from my experience (or at least results in fewer fluidsynth instrument replacement warnings), so use that version.

Again, not sure how useful these could be. But I'd figure more midis would be welcome (and Touhou is known for being extremely lax in terms of fan use, so you shouldn't get in trouble using them).

>This is Map 01 of a series of 12 Maps, each dedicated to a sign of the zodiac.
So this is a ZDoom map from 2004, a fairly big one, and supposedly one of a series of 12 (I'll just have to search and see how many actually got made). It's kind of a weird map honestly, the appearance of it is frequently plain, and it almost reminds me a little bit of the Master Levels transposed to the Playstation, probably for the space/night sky it has going and the frequent use of brown.

Slightly barren and empty at first, but it kicks up as you go. Some parts are pretty nice in visuals, a lot of places have kind of surreal things going with the use of the sky, and I like it. It's ZDoom because it expects you to use mouselook to shoot switches, and I'm pretty sure you're meant to use jumping.
It has some underwater areas too, though these aren't set up properly, sometimes a sector in an underwater area isn't properly underwater, often it lets you actually swim above the water (which is actually still in the water). The author either didn't test these parts very much, or he didn't know how to do it correctly, possibly it actually was, but this is something that was broken a long time ago given just how old this ZDoom level is. Oh well, it's still playable.

you can make projectiles check for actor health and go from there, but the lazy side of me says just make the weapon attacks give the monster an inventory item, and when they have three have that third projectile take all of their HP, though I'm not sure if that'd properly track kills or not.

A pretty fun little castle level. Definitely interesting in regards to navigating it. In particular, in order to enter the castle itself, you have to turn around at the starting point and go through a door there.

Good use of Doom 1 monsters across the board, although it throws a ton at you and I couldn't figure out how to get the rocket launcher. Lots of traps that make this map feel very fast paced. As far as I understand it, the quake engine has a few preset sizes for entities. When a map is compiled, different "hulls" are created for each size. This is why ogres cant path through areas it looks like they could - they have the same collision box as shamblers. I feel like the shotgun has good damage, but the spread is just awful. I would generally agree that it is dogshit, but I have found it useful for sidestepping attacks and basically deleting things close range. For you Doom 1 fans, you should really check out the Doom II for Doom 1 mod. As much as I admire Doom II's creativity, of gimmicky maps, Doom 1 was always the better experience for me just to knock out those first three episodes. This mod randomly places Doom II enemies within the game, and it feels so at home to have these guys flesh out the roster. Though it's important to note, the SSG was not carried over by the mod. Instead, the Doom II enemies' health is balanced as such to consider that fact.

Dude, the fast monsters flag wasn't even part of the original doom. The creates for doom95 even understood that this game was too easy. That's why each installation became progressively harder but they kept the same base which ultimately makes their "challenging" content impossible if you actually play it as hard as you can without respawning monsters. Doom is good for people who want to gun down mindless npcs who hardly react to your presence there. In my mod, you make a mistake against something against a baron, once with armor and buffed hp, your ass is grassed. Hell, even making a mistake with a shotgunner can cost you dearly. I have to manage my items and ammo beside the increase to difficulty and the new behaviors of the monsters makes it where they act like they're alive. They do not tolerate your presence and there is no infighting (though they can still hurt each other). Sometimes, you get behind cover, and the mother fuckers don't stop shooting fireballs for a good fraction of a minute. Sometimes, they shoot and run towards you and monsters with blatant weaknesses like the pain elemental now have a short range ripper attack. Anything that explodes like the mastermind, will deal explosive damage to you. Growing your character's states is a really long grind and death means losing shit. Starting a new game doesn't wipe your stats or items (including the ones in the bank) and the only way you can even manage to have a bank full of munitions is if you don't die or miss (there is no auto aim either). If you're bad enough, I even made it where your character gets deleted and all items are lost. I don't even know why I did that when I never die like that. Monsters move around on their own without being alerted and often times they do find a flank on you. It's also a library of close to a thousand maps (including all the original doom wads, nerve, and master levels). This and more makes Doom fun. Vanilla was fun in 95. Don't even need an IWAD to play it

I know this probably gets asked once a month, but was is the ideal control scheme? As I kid I played with mouse + arrow keys. Re-played Doom I on Switch and got used to the new controls fairly quickly, but then started Doom II on my computer because I was playing with WADS anyway.

I use WASD for movement. W for forward, S for backwards, A for left strafe and D for right strafe, E for activating lines, and the mouse for turning/aiming. Bingo. It works fantastically for classic FPS that use all 1-0 keys for weapons (some take it even further and use the - and = keys as well). Once you get good muscle memory with your pinky you have tons of extra keys available on the fly. The only downside is you have less access to modifier keys like Ctrl but you don't want to be using key combos like that for faster paced games and most titles don't even support that function anyway.

John Carmack gave me a little piece of code which turned out to be the assembly inner loop for Doom. ROTT, it turns out uses the same scaling routines as found in Doom (who would have thought). Apogee also signed a deal with id that would allow us to put floor and ceiling code in ROTT. Once this was done the game really took on a whole new look.
The conversion from REAL mode to PROTECTED mode required a complete rewrite of almost every subsystem in Wolf3D which in the end made the ROTT engine VERY different from the Wolf3D engine. One of the subsystems which had to be re-written was the sound system. That is where Jim Dose came in. He wrote an amazing sound system outside of Apogee/3D Realms that would later be used in all of Apogee's products. Once he was near completion he was brought on to the ROTT team and helped finish up the game (he created RANDROTT among other things).

Tom Hall's maps became great after John Romero and Sandy Petersen refurbished them, back when he was still working there, his maps weren't very well developed and kind of barren. If he had been on longer likely that would have changed, but he had a central role in design and 9 out of 10 of his ideas went against what the other guys wanted, and his levels weren't doing nearly as good of a job of exploiting the engine's capabilities for abstract geometry as John Romero's was, which endeared themselves strongly to John Carmack.

He left some good contributions to the game after all, like flying enemies and teleporters, as well as partial levels, but much just wasn't cut out for the kind of game Doom shaped out to be.

I think his layouts hit the perfect balance between Romero's more linear style and Sandy's open-ended sandboxes. Maps like E1M4, E2M2, and MAP10 are always great to replay due to the many paths you can take, without being obtuse like some of Sandy's more experimental maps. Of course it took Sandy and Romero to polish them and make them fun/interesting, but I really appreciate what remains of his style.

If we made it for the DSDA port, we could make it into episodes while keeping Doom 2 assets, and we could also add missing flats and textures from Doom 1 and the Alphas/Betas as options for use. I love working with Boom format, but I'm wondering if it would be appropriate to work with its added capabilities with these general design goals.

Though with people interested in a prospective Plutonia project sometime in 2021, maybe this is something we could shelve for later.

It's actually one of the easier maps. Only part that's even remotely hard is the room you teleport into with shootable switches and pain elementals but even then, a plasma gun deals with that pretty easily which the map provides for you. There's also a bfg secret in the room with the trap doors full of pinkies. The green textured face is a shootable wall and contains a bfg. You use that for the key you grab for the exit when all those walls come down. Just start firing as soon as you see them and never let go of the trigger until the tanks are out of the way.

Not sure if people would be interested in mapping in only one style, or if people would want to play such a thing compared to the grab bag of styles that most community projects have (part of the strength of 2048 was the variety IMO). At least with a Plutonia project it's more of an aesthetic restriction with the added expectation of high difficulty, people can still map in their own style (e.g. I prefer to make adventure maps with easily identifiable areas and a strong atmosphere, which doesn't lend itself to a Casali map).
I would love some kind of a DTWiD project and would probably go straight for a Tom Hall clone but I imagine a majority of submissions would just be the maps people would tend to make anyways, but with a Doom/Doom2 skin thrown on top (if that makes sense). It's way harder to enforce design goals on the sort of impromptu projects that get made here compared to a forum or Discord server. I would definitely map for a vanilla classic style project, though.
