Is this the purest game ever made?
>one circuit

It has a certain charm that I don’t find replicated in games like Daytona or SEGA Rally.

But that's false, at least for the home version. There's the easy/normal circuit (2 laps vs 3 laps), and then the hard/time trial circuit with the extra extension through the construction zone, plus the backwards versions of each. I'll give you the rest, though. RR1 is great.

Those games do what RR does pretty well--fast; fun; simple well-designed tracks and format; set to good music. If you said that R4 doesn't replicate the charm of Ridge Racer 1, I'd agree

>If you said that R4 doesn't replicate the charm of Ridge Racer 1, I'd agree
That's reasonable, but I'm not sure if it's right to assume R4 was even trying to replicate it. Most of the PS1 era games kind of do their own thing. If RR1 and RRR is a celebration of everything nineties- a system-selling arcade port with solid frames, absolutely bonkers music, and a general vibe of high energy enthusiasm covering everything from the announcer to the crunchy sound effects when selecting options in the menu screen- then R4 is a send-off to the decade, with a more subdued soundtrack, a cool overall palette, four teams/stories that bring the maturity of Rage Racer without the edge, and an in-game year's worth of more realistic road courses culminating at New Year's Eve, 1999.

No, it's just a glorified tech demo. It's shocking to me how a game with such little content and inferior racing mechanics to contemporary SEGA racers was so lauded. I think it just comes down to hype about the new playstation and graphics obsession.

I remember Ridge Racer and Daytona USA being used as arguing points around which system was better back at school.

Ridge Racer was certainly closer to its arcade original than Daytona USA was, but Daytona was the better game overall. Daytona had three distinct tracks compared to Ridge Racer's 1 (with a single variation, not counting reverse/mirrored BS), plus Daytona USA could have up to 40 cars racing on the track at a time. Ridge Racer had the better framerate though.

I think that Sega Rally Championship is superior to both games though.

"Imagine spending fifty bucks and getting an arcade game you can play at your house any time you want, as many times as you want, without having to go all the way to the arcade and waiting for the machine to be free and then spending fifty cents on every race" is how people actually thought about the situation back in the 90s.

>Is this the purest game ever made?
I would say it's up there among other 10/10s.

Lets start with the aesthetics. Ridge Racer and especially Ridge Racer Type 4 are technical marvels on the PS1. The PSP remake is even more stellar. We’re talking a solid 60fps at all times, great track geometry and all the shiny cars your eyeballs could ever possibly take in. The colour palettes are cool, understated and muted, but that’s not a negative. Each course has its own identity, and where there is bold colour, it’s implemented masterfully. Round a corner and that coloured sky just hits you. The neon accents in the city courses come in at just the right time as to take your breath away. Add in the different times of day for all the courses, and you’ve got an assault on the eyeballs. Ridge Racer looks like it’s definitely punching above the PSP’s graphical weight. On PPSSPP, it looks about as good as it possibly can when scaling up to higher resolutions. The lighting, baked in as it may be, looks amazing. Some clever effects kick in at various bits of the track to simulate sunlight, cloud cover and more.

>>7201439
Ridge Racers is all about the gameplay. One of the few games that felt OK with an analogue nub on original hardware, playing these games in PPSSPP or PS1 emulators with your gamepad of choice takes that golden gameplay nugget and polishes it up to such a degree you’ll need sunglasses just to look in its direction.

>> No.7210007

>>7203486
Not so fast! You’ve gotta drift to take these corners. You’ve gotta boost to take over your opponents. To fill up your nitro boost gauge, you’ll need to drift through bends, hairpins and chicane’s at a high enough speed and with enough grace to please the system lords. If you don’t, no boost for you.

Certain corners require certain approaches, and if you don’t tackle them in precisely the way the game wants you to, you’ll be slipping and sliding all over the place. I love this. It forces you to learn the quirks of each of the courses. You’re punished with a loss of speed and no boost, so the impetus to do well is always there, and with the course’s being so memorable – a stunning feat, given their sheer number and make-overs – it’s easy to do. You’ll know them in-and-out before you know it, and your performance in-game will get better and better.

Maybe, if you are an ADHD zoomer who can't stand not having constantly changing stimulation going 24 hours a day.

In the 90s the goal of a game like Ridge Racer was to do races over and over until you had shaved every last second possible on your laptimes, then you'd show your friend, and if yours were faster you would hold it over his head and gloat like a motherfucker until a few days later when you'd go over to his house and he'd show you that he managed to knock a second and a half off of your time, and he would gloat like an asshole, so you'd go back to your house and practice some more and the cycle would repeat.

High scores and bragging rights were the name of the game, why do you think every single arcade game had its high score list display during its attract mode?

>The PSP remake is even more stellar. We’re talking a solid 60fps at all times
I find racing games really benefit from 60fps, mandatory for the immersion, visual fidelity and playing mechanics. But I still tolerate 30fps ps1 for some casual laps

good player will adapt to any challenge.

wip3out still far superior to all the sequels and its 30fps.

and psp version is easy on rails trash so all you have is aesthetics as there's no depth at all or challenge,.
