I've made a few attempts to get into FF7 in the past, on my PS Classic, but now I'm starting again on PC because it's more convenient for me and has the speed-up feature. I know there's a few graphical mods and retranslations, but I hear they vary from weird to downright garbage. I also heard there was an issue which screwed music timing on a segment near the end of the game and if that's the case something to fix that would be nice too. I assume there's stuff to get rid of the issues the PC version had, like the flickering mouths and such.

If I am going to be real with you anon, even if you are playing on PC it's better to just emulate the original PSX game with your Scanline/CRT/NTSC filter of choice. It's visuals simply do not scale well to high resolutions and will look even worse on a flat panel . Visually the PSX version is the most cohesive and the music is of course going to be perfect, it's the system it was built for and you won't have to worry about stupid bullshit like mouths, song loops and crashes. Most emulators have the speed-up feature that's in the mediocre steam version. Unless you absolutely must play with ugly/useless visual mods there is no reason to touch that port.

Ah, that makes sense. I've looked around a bit and the only mod that appeals to me really is Remako, I've always been a fan of those AI upscaled mods like with the RE games. Though I don't know if there's anything similar for the PS1 version, I'll look into it.

Remako looks great. Honestly, that plus a chibi-replacement mod would pretty much fix the only real issues with it

Nino's slowly but surely working on a chibi pack, model by model. He's the one that did the Nomura artwork-styled battle models mod, you'll find it in the same thing on Nexusmods as its own download. Not complete though so, obviously not the time to use it in a full playthrough.

Interesting, another thing I saw was the retranslation mod, at first I thought it was irrelevant but apparently it actually helps the story a lot. Still don't know if the PC version has a mod to fix the mouths and music timing though. But the PS1 version supports the retranslation so I might use it regardless, it's confusing which one to pick.

What kind of mods are you looking for? there's a few gameplay mods that are really good, but they're for the seasoned FF7 Player that already beated the game at least once. As for "graphical enhancements" all of them look like shit, the "music remasters" are not any better either. So depends on what you are looking for.

If you are looking to play the game for the first time, I don't know what to say, unless you have a console and a CRT TV, you'll won't get the genuine FF7 experience. You could try emulate it with psxfin, duckstation or... RetroArch and Mednafen.

Generally just stuff to enhance the game in order to beat it for the first time hence why Remako and the re-translation stuck out to me. I'm generally just really confused on which way to play the game, I keep hearing different things from different people.

If you are getting confused, stop messing around with mods and emulate ps1 version. It plays decently with a software renderer and generally all ps1 emulators have good compatibilty since its the most important game in the ps1 library to get running accurately. No mods, no retranslations. Go Vanilla.

Wouldn't say it's the best, the HD textures make it probably a bit too noisy if you play the game at a lower resolution so they don't stand out as glaringly, but all things considered probably the best on-model chibi mod there is besides some needed face adjustments for Barret and the like.

Beacause isn't so much a retranslation as it is a rewrite by a bitter EOP weeb, Cait Sith talking like a complete retard was what happened when the other members on the Qhimm forums rejected his bright idea to replace Cait with his own character, something he justified because he claimed Cait was an "afterthought" and "made no sense in the story". So he proceeded to sabotage the character with near-intelligible dialogue and the retard still comes on here occasionally to shill his fanfic garbage.

DONT FORGET
the combat in ps1 runs at 60 fps with 15 fps animations while the pc version runs 15 fps overall
this makes things like tifas minigame and the battle square slots easier on ps1
menuing in general feels better on ps1

PAL version original hardware on CRT.

Even a beat up off brand CRT TV/Monitor will offer a better visual presentation than an LCD/LED ever could.

>> No.7204230

PAL version is 50 Hz and the screen is letterboxed which fucks the ratio a bit (like most PAL games from that era).
Just emulate the NTSC version and play on a non-huge monitor. If you can't stand sharp pixels just use any CRT filter.

Because if I remember what I heard right, Eidos got a pre-final JP version of the game that they had to partly reverse-engineer into being on parity with the US release, which results in all kinds of weirdness throughout the port.

To this day there's Eidos weirdness of this kind, Deus Ex: Human Revolution on the PC was a great port but for some reason the Director's Cut (the only one you can readily get from Steam or GOG) was ported from the WiiU port so the textures are absolutely terrible.

Source code is only part of the issue though. Source code isn't going to have the high resolution original renders.
