This game scarred me for life as a child.
Just something about it seems depressing or hopeless.
The map is oversized and empty an endless maze type feeling. It seems like they wanted to give an ominous feeling with all the sound effects, voice and music they chose for this game.
Maybe its just the n64 architecture, almost every Creation in this game is spooky. Like the giant empty boats in the first level and the giant cat/dinosaur sculptures.
children locked in cages crying.
Something about being in this old roman type place but having futuristic enemies and weapons scared me.
The enemies give me a feeling of how cruel they are and they die like insufferable beasts.

the tone of the game is grim, visceral, intense, and lonely. the enemies are intelligent, relentless, merciless, and as you said, have an air of cruelty about them. it's a brutal world where things die brutal deaths. all of these things were intentional decisions made by the developers. that's what makes it a well designed game.

The gun dinosaur riding in Turok 2 is very fun, OP as fuck, but fun, and it's completely optional if it's not your thing.

>In the ps2 turok when you have to fly on the dinosaur i always lose.
Yes, that was bullshit, difficult to control, instadeath crashes everywhere and long levels that will require the player to start over if he dies, since there's no saving nor checkpoints. The lowest point of the whole Turok series, arguably. But the game wasn't just PS2, it was also on the other 6th gen consoles and PC, with the PS2 being the second worst port, behind only PC (the absolute worst)

1. Ledge grabbing. Original didn't have this. It's for fags that can't jump.
2. Notification icons to let you know where key items are. Turn it off faggit.
3. You can now teleport from station to station. Not really all that casual. More like quality of life change to save time rather than wasting time running to the end of the level to leave or resetting the game.

This game creeped me out more than Resident Evil ever could
I played all 4 N64 Turoks and only 2 had this feeling. The others were gory, but not creepy. 2 is all about exploring these haunted, forgotten places and facing bizarre, twisted creatures.
There was one place I remember very vividly, a giant staircase and something like a valley with raptors, on the very first stage that made me very scared. Then last year I watched a playthrough of the game on Youtube but there were no such places. I probably dreamed about the game as a kid and my memory mixed the dream and the game together.
