694516

I had kind of a creepy experience with a game that when I was a kid that really stuck with me. This must have been very early 90s at least, so the dawn of 3D games on PC. The game was called Lightspeed, by Microprose. It was a little complicated for me at the time, and I was more interested in trying to blow things up. The game had some animated scenes where you spoke to aliens in addition to the 3D graphics. The aliens themselves were sort of disturbing, like one goat race that asked you "Are you a male of your species?" before seemingly jerking off while you talk to him. Another race was a bunch of slave traders who you could sell your own space station to in exchange for a really nice ship. Couldn't find a good example of the art of the game.

Anyway, I got my butt typically kicked most of the time. One day, I discovered I could glitch the escape pod to give myself infinite missiles. So I proceeded to go around killing EVERYONE. I don't remember how far I got. I ended up running into the Jot, which were one of the stronger races, but I hadn't had a lot of experience dealing with them.

So while attacking, I accidentally sent out a probe to communicate. The comm screen popped up displaying the Jot, which from memory were these light blue balloon-headed ugly guys. The one I was talking to reached up, tore it's head in half to reveal another head inside, which said "DIE!". I turned that computer off and never played that game again.

>> No.694638

I remember playing the shit out of that.

Don't remember the Jot, or any head ripping aliens though. Pics or that didn't happen.

>> No.694804

>>694638
I barely remember any of the aliens in the game, since I stopped playing after that. I am sure it is not as scary as my memories make it out to be, but some silly things are scary when you're a kid. The Jot, or whatever they were called, seemed fairly normal until I got up to that point. There were a couple of alien races that I very rarely ran into before that, like the nomad, who would tell you what a particular race's "sin" was. I only ran into that guy about once, and couldn't find him again.

Since I am really sure that this happened when I was messing with the escape pod bug, it doesn't seem like something I would imagine, although I must have been around 10 or so at the time. I'm not crazy...I think.

I actually looked around for pics of the alien races, and had a hell of a time finding any. There was a youtube vid up of a couple, but I only vaguely remember them. I read that there were two star systems, so maybe there were different races in the two of them?

I remember as a kid, dreading returning to the mask salesman below the clock tower in MM. I knew, I KNEW I had to go there to advance the game and become human. I also knew that I didn't have his mask, and he was going to be very very pissed about that. So the part where he reaches his hand out and asks for it scarred me for life. I think it took me for a few days to even click past that point

Dr. Chaos for the NES is a wretchedly horrible game, but when I played it the first time as a kid, it was horrifying. The cover art for the box had really intrigued me for the longest in the NES rental aisle and I remember thinking to myself in all my naivety, "I wonder if I'm old enough to play this. It looks really scary. Is that blood?"

The game gives you a knife and a quest to collect...something. I never lived that long through any of my attempts. The first-person room view was really intense for me and I felt there could be danger lurking anywhere, and sometimes there was. The monsters were really disturbing. I couldn't even tell what they were. They were just weird caricaturistic THINGS moving erratically unnatural around the screen. And before you know it, you're dead and you have to start over.

Years later, I found an article on the game on Hardcore Gaming 101 and discovered all the similarities between Dr. Chaos and the movie House. Blew my fucking mind.

There is a single room located in the cathedral level of Castlevania SOTN which has an empty confessional booth. If you sit on one side, a phantom priest materializes and sits in the other chair. In the Playstation version at least, there appears to be some quiet dialog between your player character Alucard and this NPC. He disappears and leaves you grape juice of all things.

if you sit in the priests chair, an old woman materializes on the other side of the booth and draws the confessional curtains to conceal herself. Then an array of spikes and blades jut out of the booth and damage you. It made me jump.

The bgm in this room is completely different from the rest of the game. An ominous drone.

The first time a metroid latched onto me in the first game, I didn't know how to kill it or remove it. After hopping around in a panic and dying, I was so fucking freaked out I didn't play the game again for a few weeks. Then I slowly, slooooooooooowly began poking at them until I figured out what worked.

When Metroid II came along, the further evolutions of metroids would get a yell out of me but that was due to surprise lightning bolt rape and whatever else they did. The few normal ones towards the end of the game didn't really bother me much since I knew what to do. Then when I played Super Metroid, and got to the end of the game and entered the dead room, it was the first game all over again with me being unable to figure out how to get the fucking thing off me. I didn't stop playing, but every time I went through that sequence for the next couple months I started shivering and shaking uncontrollably(though without any real fear).

I gave no fucks during Fusion/Primes.

Thinking back on it, metroids were the last monster I ever had a nightmare about.

Why do so many Nintendo games have nightmare fuel? Is it just because they're expected to be kid-friendly so when spooky stuff happens it affects the player more?

What I didn't like about the first ActRaiser was that it was such an aimless mishmash of fantasy and religious elements, kind of like Castlevania. Pyramids? Sure, why not. Hindu gods? Seems about right. Werewolves? Throw it in with the rest! And then there are elements of Japanese folklore and art and in the end it just seems too silly when it adds up. Act Raiser 2 was much more effective and atmospheric in staying more or less in a mythology inspired by Christiniaty. Sure, it had robots and aliens, but I could buy it.

Has no one posted these yet?

I was never scared all that much of the Dead Hand because it looked too much like a big ole' monster to me. But the Redeads look just barely human. I think someone on the development team of OoT had just finished Resident Evil and was dead set on ruining some childens' psyche. There are obvious parallels to the zombies in Resident Evil: you can hear them moaning before you engage them and their bodies stay lying around when you kill them. Of course I had already acquired preceding childhood trauma from watching my dad play Resident Evil, so some parts of the game were nearly unplayable for me for years. My brother had to get through the royal grave for me and I had not beaten the game until I was 15 owing to the Shadow Temple. Imagine how freaked out I was when I left the Temple of Time after getting the Master Sword and town sqaure was crawling with these nigthmares.

I found all of the others usually kind of comedic. Though the little gnome guy was kind of scary, in a way.

The hooded dude gave me nightmares after I saw that face on his "stomach" and it kept growling at me.

Also sometimes you got too close to a wall and the raptor in the room adjacent starts roaring in your ear making you shut yourself wondering where the fuck it is.

Practically EVERY underwater segment EVER. Devil May Cry, Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, even in SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE, when you have to clean TEETH. (pic)

It's mortifying. It's only in 3D water games, every underwater level in 2D games are rather mundane and calm, but 3D games. OH NO. I'm ready for goddamn Cthulhu to come out of nowhere and whisk me away or something.

I've always been an audiophile that is very audio-sensitive. I can't sleep with even the slightest sound, and I'm easily scared by loud noises, even now.
I tried playing Ocarina of Time at a friend's house as a kid, and I was horrified by it. Not just the sound, just the entire experience, and I barely even made it past Kakariko village. I don't know exactly what qualities of it affected me, but any music that was from it or sounded a lot like it scared me for years.

I don't know of many others who have played Shivers, but it was an old point-and-click game from Sierra released back in '95.

The music in this game... fuck. It made me so damn uncomfortable all while trying to solve ridiculous puzzles.

I read that the artist who drew that took some liberties. The original descriptions from eyewitnesses never said it had arms with claws. It actually looked more like this...

But that other drawing does look scarier for sure.

Think of a full-powered Samus from the previous Metroid games, except, that's not you; but a virus-clone of you. Oh yeah, and it's tracking you down like a hunter throughout the game. It's bounty hunting you, instead of the other way around.

Meeting him the first time whas an outworld experience.

>Be at my cousins house, "Hey, let's play blood".
>My uncle finished the game and there was a save on "Hall of Epiphany"
>All bosses cleared, only Tchernobog left.
>Switch the obelisk.
>That voice when "I have awaited you. Kneel before me"
>Freak the fuck out, eyes like plates.
>Suddenly the door opens, Tchernobog appears.
>Scream out like a little girl.
>He blasts me up with blue napalm.
>Caleb screams a bloodcurling moan.
>I ran the fuck off the rumm, shocked to the bone.

Blood 1 was a horryfing experience then I was 7 or 8 years, now I love the everloving fuck out of it and still play it on the Dosbox. Man, I would love to have an experience like that again. Also, Blood 2 is shit.

When I was a kid, Resident evil 1 scared the shit out of me. I played through the game very slowly, dying regularly. But the first time I encountered these giant spiders... I stopped playing this game, and I couldn't complete the game until years later. (I had arachnophobia, so...)
