Which genre do you prefer? And don't be a bitch and say you like both. One is the best genre in history of games, the other one is pure trash. That's just how life works.

What about games that do both like based Xain'd Sleena?

That's allowed, it's my fault for not mentioning these kind of exceptions in my OP.

I like both. Wut r u gonna do about it fatty?

I'd rather play either with RPG features like Tyrian was. It's rarely attempted in both genres despite making them 100x better.

Why choose when you have Gundhara?

Seriously tho, until yesterday I had no idea this game existed. Pretty good. Also rare istance of the raiden 2 toothpaste laser in a game.

Run n guns because I like feeling like John Matrix also I really suck at shmups.

Run'n'Gun is the better one, imho.

Shmups are not trash though, but usually devs rely on shitty shooting mechanics lke giving the player too much fire power to wipe out half the screen. Any kind of shooter that doesn't require some effort of the player to aim is a shitty shooter after all.

Some devs got it right. Namco (Xevious) and Treasure did great. Even old school gems like River Raid or Space Invader clones piss all over the majority of 90's shot'em'ups.

STG developers did a better job of pleasing their fans by creating harder games, coming up with new game mechanics, and/or creating more complex scoring systems. Meanwhile, almost every run & gun I've ever played is garbage to play (seriously) for score. That means they don't have much value beyond a 1cc/no miss. (The Metal Slug games are pretty fun to do some basic scoring in, ie. collecting all of the items and finding all of the prisoners, but then you watch a high level run and realize the scoring is atrocious.)

Vertical run 'n guns suck, might as well just play a shmup. No platforming gameplay = fail.

>> No.7189905

There's more shoot em ups with better graphics, music, and well designed levels. So I would say I generally prefer the genre. But when a run and gun is done well, it is more fun because your guy isn't essentially just a cursor moving around a background.

Lately I've been having more fun with run n' guns for that reason. I like controlling a character, jumping and hiding behind terrain, having ''skirmishes'' in each screen against other soldiers, seeing humans and robots blow the fuck up is more satisfying than mowing down pop-corn enemies with an overpowered space ship. Also run n' guns take less routing they play more like beat em ups depending on strategy and knowing how enemies work. They still take routing though and some memorization, but it's not frame by frame pattern memorization shite which gets boring fast.

Nah, shmup was ruined when it decided to go tranmaku, thanks to Cave. Run 'n guns have been able to stay relatively pure, however.

Depends really. Run'n'Guns are definitely better co-op games, but shmups are better single-player games, with a couple exceptions like Gunbird 2. >>7189347 is right though. A good twin-stick shooter like Bangai-O shits on 99% of games from both genres

>> No.7190667

>>7190596
I wonder why they didn't make more horizontal-perspective twin-stick shooters like Bangai-O. It's such an untapped genre.

If high scores are your thing then you got a point.
