In all seriousness, is there a game for the SNES or PSX (the consoles I know I can safely emulate right now), maybe DOS or similar with a slight more "mature" tone than usual?
I like retro games (duh) but I'm not in the greatest mood these days, and I'm a bit tired of the "lets save the world from evil-power of friendship-etc, etc, etc." stuff.
I'm not asking for ultra edgy stuff nor for le deep philosophical games, and I do realize old games were made in a context, for a public.
But... well?
If this doesnt go well here I'll move it to >>>/wsr/ sorry for the inconvenience

You'll find plenty of variety in games on DOS that are not neccesarily aimed at young kids. An example of a game with a great atmosphere is Realms of the Haunting, it has fps, point 'n click and puzzle elements wrapped in a story. Other than that you have your usual (more brainless) Quake, Carmageddon. Another game with surprisingly lots of gore: Moonstone. Moving over to Windows, the most atmospheric and bloody game for me will always be Blade of Darkness. If you really want mature philisophical games, theres 3 (non retro pc games) that i really liked too: Dear Esther, Talos Principle, Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Forgot some other ones:
Blade Runner (1997, PC)
The Stanley Parable (philosophical game that runs on the Half Life 2 engine so it's borderline retro
SOMA (not retro, but amazing)

>SNES
Nosferatu
Hagane
Flashback
Blackthorne
Shadow Run
Syndicate

Check those out, they might be what you're looking for, adult protagonists with gritty environments and worlds and few-to-no "anime" style tropes.

Aight, I got SOMA and Talos in library, havent even installed them, I'll try them the next. Already played Stanley Parable, I dont think it's the second coming of Christ but it was quite amusing how it handles narrative, liked it.
I'll take note about Realms, Moonstone and the Vanishing.

>>7189226
Almost beated Shadowrun last month, I'll try Syndicate, although I'd prefer the Dos version I think. Thanks anyway for the rest.

Enjoy Citra's shader hitching which can vary from negligible to annoying (Robobot) to unplayable (Luigi's Mansion 2)

You can have an 5950x + 3080 + NVME storage and this will still happen.

Does it have to be something emulated? I've really enjoyed American McGee's Alice and Severance: Blade of Darkness lately if not.

Try Dreamweb for Dos. Depressing, interesting adventure.

Nosferatu is so cool. Playing a game like that where you don’t even find a sword, the chad MC just decks everything to death, is the best.

For retro games you're way more likely to find genuine "mature" games on DOS/PC since consoles were seen as children's toys prior to 5th gen. Try for PC
>System Shock
>Marathon trilogy
>Planesscape Torment
>Beneath a Steel Sky
>Ultima Underworld
>Ultima 4-7

>The Stanley Parable
Not retro in the slightest, engine age has nothing to do with it.

Sanitarium for Windows
It's on GOG
Also, consider playing games that you can sink hours in like space operas or strategy, and you can start from nothing and plan and succeed against the odds with no sugarcoating, that's the best for the situation you are in.

It's a stretch to look for these things on SNES. Maybe the best you can do is to choose something with a serious tone that lets its world breathe a bit, like Super Metroid or Demon's Crest. That carries what I'd call an aesthetic maturity. These are still very simple superhero stories that are focused around combat, but they usually don't display any clear evidence that they were made primarily for children. The gloomy, alien atmosphere can be taken seriously by an open-minded adult.

But yeah you're probably better off sticking with DOS/Windows games or just playing newer games, like various people have said. I mean... Dark Souls?

>> No.7191361

Play Immortal Defense, it's actually philosophical and not in a way that will make you angry (I claim), and it's a 2D low-budget indie game that should run on whatever crappy hardware you're using

You should try action rpgs like Faxanadu, Battle Of Olympus, and stuff like Castlevania and Contra and so forth.
There's lots of stuff like that with only the barest hint of a story, which means you don't get the gay YA novel dialogue.
Honestly, that's a major reason why I've never been able to get into post-2005 games, too much Disney-esque dialogue.
