SMB3mix is pretty much a Must Play if you like mario whatsoever. New worlds, levels and powerups, taken from and inspired by different games. Nintendo quality level design. ASM hacking. Save files. One of the most polished romhacks in existence. Feels like an entirely new old Mario game. If you haven't played it, do yourself a favor and load it on the everdrive.

Played through Vitality myself back when it came out, it's very well worth a playthrough, some eerie rooms and it's very exploration focused, the author's made a few other hacks but this one plays the nicest. There's some shit that's actually a surprise to see in a Super Metroid ROM hack, caught me off guard. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll at least say that you'll want to make sure you have gravity suit before fighting Ridley because he's a raging asshole in this hack.

I'm doing NES development myself, as far as C goes, NESlib gets mixed reviews and CC65 isn't the greatest program to work with. I'm sticking to raw ASM myself for the engine portion of the project.
There are a couple new C compilers for the NES though, Kick C and VBCC, the latter seems to be fast and well liked.

I agree with you personally.
The running consensus on NESdev is to design your game in C and use-ASM for the intensive parts. It's not my approach, but, i can definitely see the value in that.
Lizard uses this approach, and it is a wonderful fully fleshed out game, so, it can be done. Many other NESdev competition games do too.

I don't get this. I think the bulk of programmers messing around with NES programming are doing it for a challenge and satisfaction from making it for an older system. It's not about LARPing that you are a dev in the year 19xx, making a period-correct piece that fits into the timeline of the NES.

You may have a rom that works just fine, but, you need the exact version the patch requires. The patcher goes through and changes the exact byte addresses, which change based on region, 1.0, 1.1, etc. Luckily, patch sites and readme files tell you exactly what version you need, what the file should be named, and even file checksum hashes if you want to verify.
Luckily, in most (almost all) cases, you don't even need to worry about the checksum hashes, because you can just search for the filename and get the correct rom.

Hey i played this yesterday.

- collision was sometimes a bit janky /hard to see where exactly you can or can't go. (probably because of the engine)
- music was cool
- art was ok.
- I would have really enjoyed a run-button, towards the end it got a bit tedious for me.
- i liked story and dialog and it kinda got to me at the end.

All in all i really enjoyed it!

Yeah, that's usually the case. ROM names have been standardized for like 20 years, i remember renaming tools in like the NESticle days.
FDS is weird because alot of times they were dumped with save data, so, to this day, there are some games without perfectly clean verifiable dumps. the gigaleaks changed alot of that though!

No thanks. I'll keep my 'shit' roms as they are rather than stress over tediously altering them for hours while snapping discs in half and waiting for the day that I realize something else 'needs' to be done and snap 'em in half again.

not that I don't use other storage methods, but the point is that going through the redundant drives sounds like such a pain to begin with
anxiety inducing just to think about it

I like to hope that the roms are fine as they are, and my files in general without special softwareschecking on them.

You can switch banks in the "IO map" screen (F10 from the debugger) which shows all the system registers. It's under the "GBC banks" header and you'd just flip the value of "FF4F VRAM" (1 for accessing the BG tile attribute data). Now you can edit data in the debugging window as usual. I assumed backwards compatibility issues, it's a retard check is all.

Also I have learned helplessness. I just bought broken soldering iron. Guess I'll never solder gpio pins onto the price gouged pi zero I bought 2 years ago.

Just last week I was researching why the pocketgo won't connect to the composit, the old firmware could but was shittier, but that takes compiling with c++. As if I'm going to learn to do THAT when my soldering iron comes broken and my items are price gouged and the waveshare lcd is only going to get 15 frames per second anyway due to being a clone and etc etc everything goes awry etc and so why would trying again at patching roms even work? Why should the checksum software or whatever work? I see no reason it'd work. Why are there layers missing on lakka's snes emulator for the pi? Why is it so shit? Why would I bother with that? Why would I even WANT to touch lead? Why would I want to even play possibly shit homebrew, as most I tried made for the pc were awful back in the day?

Why why why?

Because I'd like to, so I try off and on, but it hardly ever works out.

I did hack my ps2 though once they came out with that easy method recently, though it's too little too late to matter I'm sure. Just like with pi's prices in comparison to android setups, they're too little too late too. So are android consoles, too costly when you could make a cyber deck out of a tablet and cheap controller and keyboard. Why do people even bother to sell bastardizations of the gp2x's cock? Oh yeah, ps2 had issues with txt files being too large. Not all emus worked.

But anyway, I give up after too much times go by with a software issue. Weeks ago I tried to install an eng patch, it didn't work, but there was a pre-patched download link I eventually found after an hour of off and on trying while browsing the interweb. How's that going to enforce good behavior? It doesn't. I was so bummed I never even finished the game.

/bye

Heh yeah i got the Ethernet games working recently too with a crossover cable. That was a fuckin pain dude! There were steps and things i had to do that i found nowhere on the internet:
1. It turned out that you needed a 1.0 version of SMB file share, which needed to be installed AND enabled. Windows 10 does not do this by defualt. This was nowhere in the documentation or any tutorial i found. That was hours of fun...
2. For the shared folder, it MUST be named EXACTLY PS2SMB...
3. Not only did you have to share this folder, but you must SPECIFICALLY share it with a user named GUEST or whatever you named it.

So yeah, this homebrew / hack stuff can be a pain in the ass sometimes. i feel that. But, i don't give up / complain / assume i can't do it.
Sometimes this shit doesn't work as advertised, i get it. The point of this thread is to have a place to ask for help, so, hopefully people do. That's all man.

Ok this is it, I need help applying this crap: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1386/
To keep it short (I dont want to write an essay on the whole context): I have been playing on this patch for a while but turns out that it has a "bad checksum"
Some common errors on this patch when "bad checksum" are that intro repeats or just a black screen (I didnt got any of those), I am midway through the game with no errors, but it still bugs me (and I dont want to suddenly get cucked by the checksum) so I tried to patch another rom...
I checked if it is unheaded (it is), checked the CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 all of them match with the rom. I patch my ROMs with flips, so to discard that it was messing with the rom I installed the OG lunar IPS and it still doesnt fucking work, what in the world is wrong with this patch, and what the fuck am I missing? I have been browsing for almost an hour.
Please /vr/ you are my last hope.

I'm a bit confused actually... if you're patching a rom, it will have a bad checksum unless the patch redoes it. Some do, some don't bother. It really shouldn't be a problem.

What problems are you having?

>> No.7180527

>>7179953
> checked the CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 all of them match with the rom.
> (romhack) has a "bad checksum"
Ok. Your hack is fine OP. Relax. I think i can clear this up:
A checksum is simply all of the bytes in a ROM added up. This goes in the internal SNES header. Nintendo used this as a sanity check before stamping out thousands (or millions) of carts on the assembly line.
Since you have applied an IPS patch, you have changed some of the bytes in the ROM. This means that the original checksum will be bad. That is not a problem. If your rom had a good checksum before you applied the patch, everything should be just fine.
> Some common errors on this patch when "bad checksum" are that intro repeats or just a black screen (I didnt got any of those)
Right. If the checksum did not match up on the original dump of the rom: that is a problem. Some data could be altered, missing, etc. A bad checksum itself does not cause problems, but rather indicates there are (or could be) problems with the ROM. If you applied the patch to a ROM with a good checksum, you should be just fine (as long as there are no problems with the romhack / patch, like programming errors by the person who made it).
Does that clear it up for you?

uh really? do they use some old compiler from 20 years ago?

I did this all the time back in the day, and I just don't have the energy for it now. I do not have the ENERGY to fucking google a specific rom with a specific checksum just to try 55 shitty hacks in hopes that one of them might be good.

Yes, the GBA devkit at the time used GCC so they found a matching version.

If you would bother to listen to that anon and use a fucking audit program like everyone else, you wouldn't need to do anything "all the time", you would already know what rom to apply the patch to. I know I have the full NES set of roms, when there's a patch I want to apply I just grab the rom with the right checksum. Never have issues patching. It's almost like these programs were created to eliminate these issues or something.

90% of the hacks on RHDN are shite or unfinished projects. There are tools on the site that helps you filter through the crap.

in the good old days (which weren't so good) there were tons of bad romdumps floating about. This isn't really the case anymore. IPS patchers were command line only, there are plenty now with GUI's. In fact, if you name a ROM the same name as an IPS patch, some emulators will automatically patch it on the fly.
Playing romhacks is way easier now than it used to be.
