I was a real pussy as a kid, couldn't play scary games. Now I really want to be scared, but don't get scared easily. Doom creeps me out sometimes, and can even get terrifying. There's something sinister about being alone in hell. Doom 64 has a very immersive, tense atmosphere. The monsters are horrifying compared to regular Doom designs, too. That jumpscare with the imp puzzle in the first few levels scared the SHIT out of me. Doom 64 imps are fucking scary.

Well, that's about as good as it's going to get. If you are mapping in boom there's an entire action to draw floor and ceiling in wrong place. In Doom you'd need a self-referencing sector to hide them which are a pain.

Plutonia MAP02 and MAP03 both have some invisible sectors.

It very much feels like a 1995 map. There's large spaces with nothing going on, and really cryptic progression.
I don't think I've ever seen this texture used for big crates, but it's something I can get behind.
Something I found amusing was that the exit door was just a switch to end the level.

Now press right four times. Sector Light Mode is in the middle. Set to Shaders. Like the anon said, it looks just like software renderer, except the diminishing light is perfectly smooth. You might ask why not just use PrBoom+ for software rendering and for me the extra performance from hardware rendering helps a lot with frame rate.

Also, since you're using GLBoom now, try this out, turn on monster health bars, it's on the very bottom of the same page. Use this for a while, it's a very good learning aid as it helps you memorize monster health values to the point you instinctually know how close to death something is.

Kind of shit. Starts with an annoying switch hunt that leads into a hallway with a horde on one side and a caco on the other. Best choice is to run for it then make them infight. Then it's on to a maze that's pitch black with spectres and useless blurspheres. There's a part later where you need to take a ton of damage from barrels. If you don't lose health meleeing spectres in the dark, you will when dropping into a crowd of them later on, which means game over. The map ends with a baron fight I sure as shit didn't have enough ammo for.

I mean I get your argument, not hardcore enough, but they didn't win anything but a mention for the environmental design, which is still pretty impressive.
>2. is on the Cacowards committee, so essentially awards her own maps.
What else is new? Higher tier mappers vote and decide on winners, and the winners tend to be people who make higher tier maps.

Very terrible wad. MAP01 is a giant field of nothingness filled to the brim with hitscanners, MAP02 had an Archvile at the start, and I noped the fuck out of there, and MAP03 was an ugly, unfocused techbase. Misaligned textures were a common sight in this level pack, and ammo was very scarce in the two levels that I played. 1/5. No picture because this is my first time diving into this and wangblows ate all of my screencaps.

A 15th anniversary revamp of some 1999 map. Description says this is basically the old map but played in reverse though it still felt pretty unique. I died at the very end due to splash damage in such a cramped corridor but it looks like the author also realized that and talked about it. I played with mouselook because I'm a pleb but there were some nasty chaingunner spawns that I don't even know how you would take out without mouselook. Map looked great overall but there was a severe health deficit. Most fights were okay but there were some archvile ambushes many people probably wouldn't have liked. Still pretty good in my book.

So I was just reading the manual to Heretic and I see this in the story:
>"Alone, without weapons, the surviving Sidhe would surely perish at the hands of the Order of the Triad."

So he wasn't full of shit then? They really are in the same universe?

Rise of the Triad's release date: December 21, 1994

Heretic's release date: December 23, 1994

El Oscuro's organization is called the Order of the Triad in RoTT. And the symbols for both are very similar which is why someone had asked Romero this in the first place. We know Romero was working closely with Raven during the development of Heretic and he was also helping/consulting and going to the offices to see Tom when RoTT was being made around the same time.

So are they really the same universe?

Convinced my father to buy a Voodoo 1 (or was it a 2?) bundled with Mech Warrior 2 when I was in third or fourth grade, so I could play Jedi Knight. No idea how I managed that. A few years later I had many of my formative gaming experiences on a Voodoo 3: Half-Life, DeusEx, Thief, Blood 2

We shall not see the likes of it again, Also retro pc gaming hardware general, I guess.

Any of you guys ever played Quiver? It was a DOS FPS released in 1997 that was developed on “an archaic 486DX33 system with an ancient 512K VLB (VESA Local Bus) VGA card” according to the readme file, with the idea being a Doom clone for low end systems, even though Doom could already run on systems weaker than that. as a frequent blursphere user, it's invaluable. the stock medkit can only work on open or recently-bandaged wounds, and has a chance to inflict aggravated damage with each pain spike, neither of which are desirable when your wounds auto-bandage (and then settle into untouchable "treated" wounds) and you're committed to one of the fastest sources of aggravated damage buildup.

for non-blursphere play, it's more of a sidegrade, but it is nice for co-op since multiple people can work on one person's wounds to fix them up and get them back in the fight quickly. i also prefer using it so that i spend less time at low health and in pain from using staples. blood loss is more of a factor, but i don't think that's a particularly bad thing since bloodbags are otherwise pretty niche.

I'm afraid not, atleast not throughout the day, you'll have to find a dedicated group on Discord or something, and manually arrange games. If you want to try multiplayer you'll need either the Steam or GOG version though, that's where the players (what's left of them) are at. The good thing is, not long ago Rebellion released a patch that allows cross-play between the two platforms (so potentially, more people to play with), but last i checked there was nobody playing at all.

you'll be spending more time with your armor off since it takes more time and effort to use, and you still need medkits for treating burns. you also have to consume stimpacks, bloodbags, and medkit charges to keep its supplies stocked.

>>7177947
i'll say the lights module is near-essential, because fighting zombies in darkness or behind midtextures is absolutely miserable and not in the enjoyable way, and if you ever come across underwater maps, the oxygen tank is a godsend. everything else varies from nice quality of life to personal preference to outright poorly designed. the stealth module actually breaks the blursphere because they both operate using the same invisibility flag for the player.

>> No.7178053

>>7178016
>Wait is that because UaS does not have the burn treatment implemented yet or is that intended to stay like that?
it's intentional, yeah. the trauma kit is supposed to bridge the gap between bandages and the full medkit, not replace the medkit entirely.

>By lights module do you mean the zombies having lights, or do you mean the player having lights?
for the zombies, yeah. it also puts flashlights on DERPs and lasers on HERPs, again, much appreciated when they happen to be placed in dark/obscured areas. the lights for players are a nice comfort feature, especially in co-op.

>What are the poorly designed bits?
hunger was bad for a long time, it's finally being revamped to not be an outright bulk/inventory tax, though. the wounding module predates stock HD having wounding mechanics but now that it does, it's pretty redundant. removing fragshards is just an outright cheat, nothing more or less. stealth module's busted like i mentioned, because cali plays avoiding all magic so he didn't account for it.

thinking about it more, this is pretty cool. many wads have very inconsistent skill progression. for instance, i felt some of eviternity's middle levels were hard, whereas, say, ancient aliens tosses a coin for every map's difficulty. plutonia meanwhile seemed to only slightly increase in difficulty throughout. 2048 units of /vr/ had a few tough ones before 25 or so, and then ramped up (black crest was the hardest map by quite a bit, though peanut gallery or whatever was also a bit tricky and fun).

For instance, when I played Ashes 2063 with HD my starting loadout was a revolver, 42 rounds for it, a ladder, an unloaded DERP and a lucky piece of brass. I revisited map23 since you mentioned it, and it's not particularly fun. You don't have enough shotgun shells to clear out the starting area, so you have to rely on infighting with the trapped cyberdemon, which is tedious because you're just running around in circles waiting for him to shoot, and if you're playing saveless, you're going to be replaying that section a lot. don't have too tight ammo balance, give room for error/randomness, but also give choice to the player.

Random example but if there are 3 Cacos and 12 imps, generally the player should have the CHOICE to either use shotgun or chaingun for at least half of those. There is nothing worse than maps were the designer wants everyone to play the one way he used to play.

I think i can explain why
the way it works is that you are telling the game to use AASHITTY (the first defined texture in a texture wad which is usually ignored) which is then tried masked using a midtext, pic related as a way to cheat to fool the player into thinking it's an actual bridge.
The way it can work is that the sector that uses Aashitty must use it in all the possible walls of the sectors so in order to do it (so you have to put a 1px line triangle to divide the entire sector in order to fool it on using it otherwise it causes problems i think.) if the bridge is made in multiple sectors, should be good but i am not 100% sure of it, might test.

It is a shooter published by Acclaim, and it is kind of a lost step in evolution between Doom and Duke 3D (it came a month after Duke on its own engine, so it is not a clone). Its levels are still mazes but they somewhat resemble sci fi installations overrun by alens. It has three (four with bonus generic grunt) playable characters with a bit different stats, diffrent weapons and their own intro levels. Item and weapon selection was pretty wide and imaginative too, with remote controlled kamikadze drones, automated friendly turrets, droppable barriers to hide from enemy fire (i bypassed some keyhunting by strategically placing them and jumping over), guided missiles and whatnot. It also has functional 3rd person mode, and great quality of life features - ingame setup without another executable, fuly remappable controls and mouselook out of the box in 1996. I can explain how these kind of bridges work. By default untextured platforms display the floor bleeding over the walls, but if the floor is too high to see then it's just invisible. Idk why it's aashitty because it could just be nothing. The middle texture is all you're can see from the sides.
It makes for a very convincing bridge, but only at that height, or directly above it. If you die near it you can see the illusion is broken. The benefit of self referencing sector bridges is that they work from all angles.
These ones also cause graphical glitches in glboom specifically which is why I'm a bit surprised btsx used them.

It does have code to work around that but it only works like half the time. When a projectile is spawned, the weapon that fired it is stored, then when the monster dies with the projectile as the killer, the weapon is retrieved to attribute kills to that instead of whatever you're holding. Depending on the actor pointers when the enemy dies, the whole death-by-projectile code might get skipped altogether. I should actually investigate that and see what happens with HD. It seems to work right in vanilla. Maybe it's fixable, idk.

I honestly love how there's a theme to each level, each has its own thing, level design is so nice, and some of them have these cheeky "fuck you" moments, tackling them on the go is fun. It's not overly difficult, but the jumpy beast things are too fast, and they deal so much damage. It's been a while since I've last been a fan of something, the whole package is just so nice. Playing it on a CRT, in 4:3, too, it's too comfy.

well, yes, but there's a couple other factors too. the fists are just plain good, and always present, so they come into play no matter what loadout i'm using. there's also BFG kills like >>7178730 mentioned, although usually if i switch off or drop the BFG, i'll have the thunderbuster out before the ball explodes, so i have far more kills attributed to that. a fair few will also be bleedout kills because i'll typically use fists to finish off incapacitated enemies, and if they bleed out before i get to punch them then the kill is credited to fists anyway.

i'd actually have a lot more kills all around, except my .ini got nuked a while back and the last backup i had was far behind.

I very much see your point in the progression, but having tested my own maps in 2048 in pistol start and then playing through it all progressively, it sure does change how the level actually plays, so I very much see the appeal of it too.

GzDoom should really have a toggle on the difficulty level selection for if you want to play regularly or in a Pistol Start mode, I think that would be really useful.

According to Wiki, Saturn version beat it by 4 days. But not DOS one. Duke 3D had 3rd person mode too, but it was more a gimmick than a way to play. Unlike Eradicator, which plays quite fine with it, IIRC you even start in 3rd person and need to switch to 1st, not the other way around.

Here is the map.

In the hundreds of times I've tested this map, twice in the last 20 minutes have I found an instance of enemies getting stuck within each other. That worried me, so I want to cast a wider net. It's a bug I'm not too keen on ironing out if those two instances are the only ones that will ever be. Many thanks in advance.
