What are some "hidden gems" you got baited into playing by youtubers or retrogamers that ended up being mediocre or trash? Seem s like most of these "hidden gems" are always like that.

Clash at Demonhead. It has some cool ideas but I hate the fact that the top of the screen acts as a ceiling and that falling into water makes you take a little damage.

I think maybe you misunderstood the concept of a "hidden gem" It's meant to describe a game that is in some way above average, yet disproportionately obscure during its release. It doesn't mean that it's going to match up with your favorite titles of the era, it means that it might have deserved more recognition. But then, if you're the kind of person to be baited by the words of youtube gamers, then you may be too naive to really understand.
