So I bought a PC Engine from ebay with RF output, and I'm having trouble getting a good picture. Any advice? I know RF is shit, but it can be a lot better than this.

Here's a pic of it working on ebay.

Looks like you might have a short in the cord. Wiggle it around.

>> No.713967

obvious question
set to the right channel?
it has a 3 / 4 switch on it

>> No.713980

>>713967
From what I know of JP RF, the channel isn't set for either 3 or 4. I always heard that on NA TVs, the channel gets translated to two other channels, in this case 33 and 65. There is a switch on the console, but it hasn't given me better picture.
>>713968
I tried a third party RF for model 1 Sega Genesis/Master System, which was a little shoddy to begin with, but the picture didn't improve much and I know that cord can give better picture.

That's what happens when you ask a cat to do the plugging.

Do you have any RF cables from Nintendo systems like the NES and SNES? These are usually of pretty high quality compared to others.

You might want to get an AV Booster, which will boost your video quality considerably. Any kind of CD peripheral will do the same thing. It really is too bad the white PC Engine is RF only, because it looks so much better than the composite-quality Core Grafx I/II. It can be modded up to RGB quality though, with some soldering skills.

>> No.714004

>>713995
Yeah, I just found an AV booster, I think I'll buy it. I agree with you that the white looks the best for sure, but I always like to go for "vanilla" or original models of consoles. I'll give the SNES RF a shot.

Just found this on Wiki, an RF tip:
"RF modulation was common on equipment deployed in North America. Other countries had the RF output for video equipment on different groups of frequencies. For example, equipment sold in Europe, South Africa and Hong Kong used UHF channels 30–39 for this purpose. Equipment sold in Japan used channel 1 or 2 (Channel 13–16 is for cable converters). With other channels being used for RF modulation function in other regions, channel 3/4 output is a misnomer for those regions."

I just tried the SNES/NES RF, it did the trick! Good call anon.

It is extremely easy to do an AV mod, at least on US TG16s. Never tried it on a PCE, but in this video, it looks like the same thing:

That looks really easy, I think I'll do that instead.

>> No.715115

An s-video mod is highly recommended.

My TG-16 is similarly relegated to RF-only until I get off my ass and perform surgery on it.

Are you in the US? Is your TV tuned to channel 95/96? Those channels use the same frequency as Japan's 1 and 2, I have to put my famicom on channel 95 to use it.

>> No.715169

>>715157
>US Cable channels 95 and 96 use the exact same frequencies as JP channels 1 and 2 , which is a blessing for Famicom owners who don’t want to use an AV mod. In the US, these channels are seldom used because of the interference with FM radio broadcasts (even though a cable TV system is completely isolated in theory, you’ll always get some interference in real world usage).

>This also explains why your Famicom might look like crap on your TV if you’re using the RF modulator and Channel 95. If there are strong radio broadcasts in your area in the vicinity of those frequencies, they’ll interfere with your Famicom’s video signal (and you’ll have nobody to complain to, since the Famicom is using an illegal frequency in the US radio spectrum). You could largely alleviate the problem by using thick coaxial cable between the Famicom’s RF out and your TV’s aerial socket, in order to keep those pesky talk shows from messing with your Japanese video games.

why didn't you just get a TG16 OP?
maybe I'm remembering wrong... but aren't the systems not region locked?

>> No.715253

>>715232
Hucard ports are region-locked. Most CD games are region-free, but supposedly one model of the CD systems is region-locked. Can't remember.

In either case, you always need a converter for Hucards.

I have to change my tv to channel 96 for my PC Engine.

>> No.717428

>>715157
My TV is weird, it only lets me select channels that get signal. I can't dial in 95 or 96, so what I did was power on the PCE, then set my TV to auto detect channels. The only channels that picture comes in are on 32 and 65. I do recall hearing about 95 and 96 being the JP channels for 1 and 2 though. I guess my TV's just weird.

I just thought the original Japanese model looked cool, and I figured it would take up less space. Also, I figure since it did so much better in Japan than in the West, there would be more Japanese games available.

>> No.717443

Looks like a cold solder joint on the RF port. If you wiggle the connector around a little bit it may slightly improve.

Your set up kind of looks similar to that creepy cement room with a tv placed on top of a milk crate.

Thanks, there actually was a time for three days last July when I overhauled this room and had nothing in here but a single mattress and TV like the milk crate/Iwata shrine. It was like a dungeon.

But anyway PCE/TG16 mods and whatever.

A house, I'm still living with my parents. My brother and I shared this room before he moved out, and for that time our room hadn't changed in like 13 years. The futon was falling apart, parts of rugs that were under furniture were moldy, and 90% of the stuff in the room had to go. Beneath my brother's bed there were like twenty half dollar sized black spiders, vaccumed the fuck out of them. Got everything out, bleach mopped the floor, painted the walls and floor, and got new digs. The TV was 300 bucks on Craigslist, but I talked the guy into giving me the entertainment stand with it for free, so bonus. It's pretty swank, got it done last summer.
