A part of me wishes that shit like the Super FX chip or the 32X had extended the fourth generation's lifespan for a couple more years. When you look at the stuff that was coming out around 1995, it feels like the devs were really just starting to unlock the full potential of the SNES/Genesis when the fifth generation dropped and most people moved on. A couple of more years to get the hang of working in full 3D probably wouldn't have hurt either.

Expensive and inefficient to manufacture, and significantly less powerful than the 32/64 bit consoles of the era on top of it.

This. They didn't "unlock the full potential". They were just extending the capability of those obsolete hardware.

a part of you is wishing for something that we didn't need, the Saturn is the better parts of the 32x anyway and we got a lot of software accelerated 2D gold because of it. i like to think about what 32x games had been like had they just been designed for the Saturn from the getgo

>> No.7174285

>>7173952
32x does a terrible job expanding the Genesis' capabilities. 2d games powered by it run at 30 fps, and even when it leans heavily on the Genesis, like with Knuckles Chaotix, it still has slowdown, and that game is just character sprites in levels that are essentially empty. The 32x blows.
The Saturn, on the other hand, could make a 2d platformer that just slays anything the Genesis could hope to do in terms of background layers, background detail and animation, sprite sizes and sprite animation. Of course, no one really did.

I think the 32X would be more justified if it used cards instead of cartridges, the games would be cheaper and would had better graphics.

Wow, you're right. Not a single "weeb" game on the platform. I thought Virtua Racing Deluxe was pretty good, and the 32X does have a shockingly good port of the original Virtua Fighter. I wish it had more super scaler ports, like Space Harrier and After Burner 2. Knucjkes Chaotix is weird. I like parts of it. It has some cool looking visuals. It does use the Genesis for all the enviroments and uses the 32x for sprite scaling, polygons, and background layers as well as bosses. It is a nice tech demo for the hardware. But the gameplay is a little weird. But I want to replay this one again. Mortal Kombat 2 is better than the Genesis port. It does sadly still use the low colour genesis back ground layers. But it does update the sprites to 128 or higher colours, and there are more frames of animation, better audio samples, arcade intros and other things. It is a nice enhancement. If you like MK2. NBA JAM is pretty good on the 32x. Kolibri is kinda weird, but looks nice. The 32X had such a short lifespan, so it doesn't have too many games worth talking about.

I never understood why they didn't just release the SuperFX as a lock on cart like S&K, pack it in with Star Fox, and then just require it for the rest of the games, charge like $15 bucks for the SFX cart standalone. When Yoshis Island/SFX2 released they could have done the same thing again, since many bought that game anyway.

>>What a perfect visual analogy. Sega invented the 32X to increase the lifespan of the Genesis. And that's exactly what the freaking thing looks like.

Early AVGN was on-point with that analogy. Sega had to do some strange mental gymnastics to make the 32x work on the Genesis. The 32x required a special video cable that connected the Genesis to the 32x, just so the 32x wasn't hard locked to the Genesis's 64 colour pallet. The 32x was an attempt at keeping the Genesis (in the US) hardware on retail store shelves. It actually sold much better than the Sega Saturn did at launch. More retailers had the 32x in stock too. Sega's surprise early launch of the Saturn caused retailers to boycott Sega after the lack of available stocks. Retailers were also not happy at having to stock more Sega hardware. Which lead to the 32x being discounted quickly and 3rd party support dropped like a rock.

I would like to think that instead of a Saturn, Sega would kept this monstruosity with the CD add-on and made real game with it.
One posible game that comes to mind would be a Sonic 32XCD; Graphics similar to or more polished than Chaotix, bigger stages, PCM or CDDA audio with surround sound possibilities, plus FMV for intro, between levels and endings.
