Hey guys, would you care to take a break from all this drama and help me with one last test run for the same 7 maps pack I was torturing this whole year, ever since I took mapping? For real this time, I won't hold onto the same maps for much longer and move on to second part of the project.

The usual: Doom 2 format, primarily tested with Crispy Doom and a little bit with PrBoom+, there's difficulty settings, no jumping, crouching or vertical aiming. Also if you can, turn off ghost monsters for 5th level, it's a breeding ground for them.

i tried making a simple zscript mod that reduced all shotgun ammo. i have 3 classes defined to replace existing ones: one for shells, box of shells, and one for shotguns. the first two work fine. the pickup-able shotguns while they give me the amount of ammo i want, but i lose the shotgun from my inventory if i switch off of it. what’s happening here and how do i fix it? im a noob with using zscript.

I miss this in wads tbqh. Don't get me wrong, full custom soundtracks by talented musicians is one of the pillars that makes doom modding continue stand with the best scenes out there... But it would be nice to plop into a randos map and hear some nirvana or whatever too occasionally.
Of course I can just scour some old doom level cds and find that, but the quality of the map itself will be more wildly varying at that point.

My authoritative top-10 best megawads of the last 10 years:
1. Sunlust
Kino. I have nothing else to say.
2. Valiant
The ultimate "run-and-gun" wad. Every gameplay change makes total sense (except kamikazes, fuck them).
3. Ancient Aliens
Not higher, because it lacks variety a bit and I'm not a fan of ammo starvation.
4. Hellbound
This is what Doom 2 should've been. Love these huge realistic city maps
5. BTSX Episode 2
I think most people prefer Episode 1, but this one is way more diverse in everything (settings, gameplay, map lengths)
6. BTSX Episode 1
It's "professional" enough, but 20+ brown-and-gray techbases in a row is too much.
7. Eviternity
Not bad, but poorly paced and the custom monsters for the most part were a mistake here. Some standout guest maps.
8. Unholy Realms
It's ok, a bit generic. Nothing overly exciting.
9. Going Down
Tons of inventive ideas all over. The maps are too small and overuse the "warp everyone at once" technique however.
10. Resurgence
Not really my thing, feels more like a 00s wad.

Here's where some of my harsher criticism begins. Maps1-3 were all good, not much to say asides from nitpicks. You can softlock yourself out of a few secrets by running off of floors while they're raising (the library soulsphere in MAP02 comes to mind) which I always do out of instinct. I also think there are too many switches that activate things in other areas without indicating what they did, although seeing new monsters generally helps with navigation. I skipped MAP04 out of confusion, getting the yellow key lets me access a teleporter chain that I was seriously confused by. I suppose it's to telefrag the revenants but I already killed them to better explore the area (I'm playing continuous on HMP so maybe that was easier than it should have been. The layout was also too symmetrical, it was hard to tell where I came from or where I hadn't been. MAP05 was great in concept but felt to committed to its gimmick, the progression became very predictable and I feel like at least one less layer would have still done justice to the elevator. I spent 25 mins on MAP05 and it became a real slog when I started savescumming the end, most of the fights felt too cramped to improvise so I started running back to the entrance of every room before the predictable ambush started and I was never punished for it. The switch secrets also got very repetitive and started to feel like a chore to find and shoot. My overall impressions are still positive, I'll make another post for maps 6 and 7.

>Who gives one single fuck about demos?
I would hope everyone does. It's one of the coolest things about Doom. SPECIALLY with the new ghosts feature that came out in prboom's DSDA fork. Being able to see all your attempts for a map is super neat. Being able to compare your run to others' runs is super neat. Being able to take over demos at a moment's notice and play things differently for practice's sake is incredible.

And we're both part of the problem seeing as we're talking about stupid inconsequential shit. Ive never understood this complaint. The level design is so consistently great, its easily enough to carry the repetitive visuals. And the texture set is actually more appealing & colorful compared to the stock Doom textures.

The teleport chain is something that confuses lots of people, but I'm not really willing to get rid of it. it's not very interesting mechanically, the enemies and weapons are kind of boring, and the levels are mostly barren.

I have to say your health and ammo balance feels great overall, no complaints there. I also have to commend your midi selection. MAP06 was a fun, short techbase and the non-linearity felt good. MAP07 had a much better execution of teleporting to different areas since you could see them right off the bat. The Dead Simple reveal really caught me off guard after seeing that it was a normal map, so props for that. This was probably my favourite map in the set, it was seriously fun. It's non-linear enough to explore, but intuitive and straight-forward enough, for the most part - I feel I'm lucky I didn't get lost in map02 but I just did one playthrough so far so I can't judge really. The maps feel like a cohesive experience and I think your idiosyncratic style comes out. I think it was easy so far, but I think it means it's perfect for fast monster playthroughs.

Turok 1 was Classic
Turok 2 was a sequel that doubled everything great about the original (more weapons, more enemies, more environments, more gore, more story, more variety of gameplay) and almost over-did it with its labyrinthine level design
Turok 3 ended up being just too damn ambitious (two different characters meant to play differently and have different paths, having a game world that acted independently of the players actions, trying to design the levels to play in a non-linear fashion), while simultaneously missing half or over half of its employees after many jumped ship to Retro studios, and ultimately failed at living up to its hype but managed to make a slightly above-average FPS
Turok Evolution was handled by none of the original developers working on franchise and made a buggy inconsistent game that had bits of genius scattered throughout (most of the original Turok staff went to go work on Metroid Prime)

>Retro was founded on September 21, 1998, as an alliance between Nintendo and Iguana Entertainment founder Jeff Spangenberg
Iguana Entertainment was the creator behind Turok 1, 2, and partly 3 were created by what remained of the original staff before the whole Acclaim debacle

You schizos are the ones who told me I was Alf. I was just a guy who thought Half-Life was shit and killed the Golden Age of FPS. And you called me Alf like 10,000 times. The original Alf from 2018/19 even confessed and said he was just trolling. It could've been over but you had to continue to act like everyone is the same person in true schizo fashion and call me Alf. Suffer.

Depends on the source port. ORIGINAL Doom did not show secrets in a different color in the automap, nor did it report revealed secrets once you stepped inside, nor did it have a kills/secrets counter. Nowadays, standard PrBoom will show secrets as pink in the automap, and you can check level stats with F5. Or do you mean, will the computer area map reveal the secrets? That's generally what they do, although some secrets still require hidden shootable switches or something that isn't readily apparent in the automap.

>> No.7172663

Even moderately detailed map would make the overlay map a mess, and the textured automap often looks like a noisy mess too thanks to the textures. A simple fill is much erasier to read.

It reveals everything that is not set as "not appear on the automap" by the map author, but that's rarely done for regular secrets - so yes it shows every area including secret one.
However it shows everything you have not explored yet, but does not explicitly mark the secrets, or distinguish secrets you glanced into but didnt reach (like an outside area you glanced from a window) - that is shown same way as any other area you've seen and uncovered.

GZDoom doesn't know what the hell it wants to be. It's too ambitious and feature-bloated to be a decent source port, and too user-defined to be a proper engine. It's hard to have direct control over some aspects of the engine because it's all user-defined variables, so you'd need to have a .bat or something run first in order to manually define that shit, which is amateur as hell.

If the devs behind GZDoom were competent and not a gaggle of stubborn speds, it would be best if the engine forked off into two versions: A standalone 3D game engine with more power, and a dedicated Doom source port with proper compatibility.

Episode 5 does everything right. It's a really tight and pleasant set of maps. If you only have it in you to play one episode, make it this one.
3 is almost as good, but loses points for one of the maps near the end of the episode, where you have to traverse a shitty corridor maze where everything looks the same. There's more gimmicks to this episode than 5, which I don't think work to its favor. The Hitler ghosts would've been more interesting if they were introduced earlier in the episode, and the Pacman secret level is a funny novelty, but doesn't really make for an interesting map.
4's pretty much fine. It's got all the same gameplay elements as 3 and 5, but the maps are bigger, so it might be more of a drag. The secret level might qualify as the first slaughtermap ever.
6 is some Kaizo Mario ballbusting shit. I wouldn't rate it over 1 or 2 except it doesn't have mutants and does have the best single map in the game, E6M6. That map is a work of genius and it's a shame you have to slog through the first five levels to get to it.
2 is like 6, but even less fun because mutants are just the worst. The maps are big and sprawling and full of awful ambushes. And it's the episode with the goddamn Aardwolf maze, too, which really only serves as a source of frustration and death for a player who doesn't know about it.
1 is just too basic. This was before the "shareware curse" was much of a thing, so it being the shareware episode just means it has even less variety than the later episodes. It's very Tom Hall in its designs, while I think Romero probably had more involvement with the later episodes. There's a lot of pointless rooms and paths that are just there to make it more like a real location, which was as much a misguided endeavor in Doom as it is here.

2048 maps are small enough where the total linedef count will never get too high. When you have Boom maps nearing the 65k linedef limit or UDMF which can go beyond that, the core of the Doom engine gives out regardless of your hardware. Without getting too technical, if the player can see over 5k lines of geometry at once on screen, it will create a performance hit.

I'm really enjoying Eviternity, probably the most beautiful megawad I've ever seen, wonderful music too.
The design of the maps is very strong too, but from half the difficult spike is way too big, map 14 for example, closes you too much in arenas, no Save Run is very hard there.
INB4 i got filtered in map 14 but I won't give up.

Half-Life really did change the landscape of FPS forever and essentially "killed" what the genre had been up to that point essentially over night as devs tripped over themselves in a rush to copy it. There is light at the end of the tunnel now with the 90s FPS revival in recent years though. To deny this is to deny reality.

I just don't understand on top of that why you don't want to use scripts (or mods) to fix this trivial problem. While also ignoring that you are also refusing to use one of the major strengths of gzdoom (the ease of making and using gameplay scripts or mods to tweak your gameplay experience the way you want)
And if you are going to retort "I want to play doom vanilla they way it was meant to be played™" don't bother, you are already using gzdoom, you are not even trying to play doom vanilla.

The original working title for the game was Exhumed. However they couldn't get the rights to it in the US, so they reserved it in Europe and decided Powerslave would be a good alternate title for the US market as they were Iron Maiden fans and it just fit.

Thing I always wondered was why did Iron Maiden threaten to sue over 3D Realms using the name Ion Maiden for a game but they didn't in this case. Could be because they just weren't aware of it, Powerslave had an abysmally small marketing budget which is partially what led to it's poor sales.

Linedefs only matter if they are all displayed at once, which shouldn't happen if mapper makes proper sight blockers.
Since that map is "floating in void", author foolishly decided to not place any, which is a common mistake among his kind. There are quite a few "floating" maps that have line blockers because their mappers were not retarded.

However there are couple more things to consider, such as:
Map format - UDMF will be slower than Boom format even with the same map geometry.
simultaneously active actors - those have a LOT of impact on performance, but especially so in GZDoom.

And then there's the fact that any source port of Doom, including GZDoom are heavily CPU bound, even further - they are bound to its single-thread performance, because Doom's code relies on having all things calculated consecutively, and you can't easily multi-thread it.
Most CPUs for the past decade focus on multithread performance, often disregarding single-thread, which is why you can have shit performance even on an a processor that works fine for modern games.

I couldn't run Technicolor Antichrist but I can run Mapwich 2. As someone who hasn't played GZDoom maps besides Square, this is pretty cool. I warped to map20 or whatever Bridgeburner helped make IIRC and I got subpar FPS but I'm running the beginning maps fine. Map01 looks cool but the gameplay isn't great, map02 had annoying music so I changed it, and map03 is pretty good so far

Monsters in the original Doom are very simple entities. They are merely cycling through pre-defined states such as sleep-awake, ambush-hunt, etc. This way, Doom was playable on a wide-range of 90's hardware while keeping hundreds of monsters in its maps. Nowadays with modern accurate sourceports, you can have tens of thousands of monsters in a map without noticing slow-downs. This is because monsters in Doom are very basic entities that are only ever really doing one thing at a time in a very basic way.

This is different in GZDoom. In ZDoom (and by extension, GZDoom), monsters are "thinkers". Each zombieman, each imp is an actor entity that is constantly updating their state to the engine, instead of simply notifying it when a change in their state is triggered. This is one of the big reasons why you can load a map like Holy Hell Revealed (with ~40,000 monsters) in PR/GLBoom+, and have it run fine - versus loading it in GZDoom and seeing your computer choke.

This is also another reason why demo playback in GZDoom for non-GZDoom demos can't be done without desyncs - because the monsters are just fundamentally different, obeying different RNG tables, and acting under different rules.

A really easy example to cite is how flying enemies will fly over land demons and completely break the intended flow of fights. Yes, you can turn on infinite height in GZDoom, and other compat options to make it stricter, but it still won't behave the same. There will be noticeable differences such as demons being able to reach places they shouldn't, getting stuck, etc.

Mistakes are guaranteed to happen. Most of them are unintentional. Some intentonal ones may even be disarmed before any flame starts.
These new atmospheres make a major issue out of every single communication imperfection, and push them to the point of antagonism, going as far as to sometimes maliciously interpret them as deliberate.

>simultaneously active actors
>what are those
Monsters awakened from dormant state.
When they are idle they only check for player in their FOV (sound is delivered by engine on sector basis, vanilla monsters don't actively check for it).
When they see/hear player they become active and then engine has to recalculate their movement collisions, constantly changing FOV and so on which is much more resource intensive.

Example: Nuts wad. It starts playable but as soon as you alert the monsters, performance drops since now game has to perform ~6 times more calculations.

>>7174252
>example of a proper sight blocker
a solid wall that extends all the way from top to bottom.
Anything that is behind that wall is not rendered to save performance (this method is called Occlusion Culling). Modern games (well optimised ones) use culling quite agressively to save on plycount.
Doom however renders sectors, and in OpenGL (Software renderer is different and does not need culling, but it's slower in other ways) it can't cull a sector if at least part of it is visible, so if a wall has a window, or does not reach the top (i.e. building in a city map that has visible roof), it will render the sectors on the other side.
However if such building for example is designed by the mapper to not be viewable from above, they can simply make its top a "sky" wall, which will block sight.

Good "floating" (and large city) maps are usually separated in segments that aren't visible from each other, and separated by invisible "sky" walls that act as sight blockers, thus cutting the rendering burden.

Bad "floating" maps disregard that notion (some times for the "realism") and render everything all the time.
A side effect of that, they don't bother make sound-blocking lines either so in combat, if all monsters were-pre placed then most of the map becomes alerted and active which further compounds its performance issues.

Good wide open maps use teleporting monsters instead for that reason.

You see, you hit the problem here:
>When there's a misunderstanding, people will talk it out.
What is happening now is that people no longer talk things out. They jump straight to indignation and try to humiliate the other, or to outrage and demand punishment.

Seeing this one too many times puts people on edge, and if (more like when) it finally happens to them they go straight on the defensive. Most people aren't willing to be humiliated twice.

There's many ways of doing traps. So no, not necessarily. For example, teleporter traps rely on demons that are tucked away in some room out of bounds, but within the same sound sector as where the teleporters are going to be. So - as soon as the player makes noise near the teleporters, the demons in the middle of bumfuck nowhere are gonna wake up and start teleporting in because the sound sector was connected

When the DOS version was released in 1996 (US) and early 1997 (EU) it mostly went by unnoticed. I remember playing the demo version as a kid and being weirded out, this game looked very aged already and it had poor optimization. The DOS version also had some major flaws such as not being able to sidestep (strafe) properly and no mouselook support (in a time where it was already fairly common). Which all makes more sense now because we we know the underlying reasons the title was so mistreated, it was handed over from 3D Realms to Lobotomy and subsequently got delayed. You could also wonder if Lobotomy had any experience working with the Build engine, because in the meantime Lobotomy had been busy finishing their Saturn/PSX version of Powerslave with their own engine (SlaveDriver). Thankfully now in 2020 we finally get to play Powerslave in a good playable state (PCExhumed, PowerslaveGDX), high fps + high res and with WASD + mouselook. In the meantime the original DOS version received some love by people like CHEATER, who went all the way to hack into the .exe (source code was never released) and fix the strafing and mouselook issues.

I am mostly mad about DBP not getting even a single mention anywhere. Sure, their stuff can be hit and miss, but DBP24 was genuinely fun and creative. Cacowards ignored their very existence, which means it's a strictly Doomworld/ZDF award from now on, no outsiders allowed.

I'm going to guess like most award shows these days, the judges probably only know or care about 10% of wads that came out this year, and out of that probably played 10% of those.
I don't blame them, not many people have the time to play ever wad that comes out in year, even if they were completely impartial to every type of wad

It prevents me from savescumming which I am terrible for, and playing the way I want to doesn't make it memey anyways. The pressure from not wanting to start over again has made me do some clutch playthroughs of maps that I struggled with in the beginning, what's the issue with that?

i don't know if there are other assets that have that issue.

Well what does that say then? That no-one on Doomworld that didn't contribute to the project thought it was worth a nomination, and no-one else on /vr/ cared enough to make a Doomworld account to nominate it.

And that's fine. I made three maps for the project and I never had any delusions of grandeur in the process. It's enough for me that at least some other people enjoyed my work - and I definitely appreciated two of them making it into some anons' list of favourite maps.

Yeah, some dude stretched the top pixels of a bunch of the sprites from Doom, so that if people used his rips, he could beg them for credit, as if you deserve any fucking honors or mention for extracting sprites with XWE or Slade.
Like, I get that for some games, sprite ripping isn't entirely trivial, but Doom stores each sprite whole in an archive designed to be accessible, you aren't entitled to a pat on the back for using a standard feature.

Some sprite rippers are absolute fucking faggots.

Celephais and the Quake mapping discord is a circlejerk of autism and now trannies on the literal sense of it, and even them joining resetera circlejerk.
Funny that they shit on other quake games and even the doom community but all they do is copy AD and shit on old authors.
I take Neil Manke's maps over the intricate copypaste boring shit of nowadays.

And worse is that they literally became what happens when you mix the worst of Dumbworld and RachelForums censorship, with zoomers praising it.
i still take /vr/ over those circlejerks, atleast here we are free to do any type of shit without dumptruck, niggerbeep or his bots pester you about "you were warned for saying bad words and hurting my fee fees".

Is it narcissism that drives them? I feel there is something unguided here, or a huge misunderstanding that might or might not be caused by autism to some degree that people are not honest and open about. Even on here there are a few jewish posters who spoil the fun for everyone else under the disguise of anonymity, but when you have a profile attached to your statements, maybe it's time to take a different approach to PR?

Remember don't go straight for UV.

A method I used to employ is, do pistol-starts no-saves on skill 1. If you like the map, do another saveless run on skill 2, then skill 3, then skill 4 (UV). If you STILL want more, you can do UV +fast monsters, then even nightmare. Or, you can move on to the next map at any time. I did this for a while, and eventually you get to the point where you can just start blindly on UV - depending on the megawad, of course. I'm playing Valiant, which is pretty easy and forgiving because it gives you lots of rockets and health to deal with all the monsters. Let me just add that, doing blind pistol-starts no-saves UV runs CAN be a waste of time unless you are a Doom god - if you're gonna do blind UV pistol starts, you might wanna do saves because one trap can insta-kill you and some point replaying the starting sections does not make you better

No Mapwich 2 is a community project. The theme or challenge is, about 40 mappers put their name in a lottery and everyone was randomly assigned a partner to work with to create a map. Also it uses some gameplay mod I never heard of, Supercharged. I would say just skip to map03 right now and see if you like it. I wasn't impressed by map01 and I skipped map02 because the music was getting very annoying, but map03 is fun. Not Valiant fun, but it does show that building maps around this mod has lots of potential - the new "scrap gun" functions basically like a super-super-shotgun and this map is basically built around how fun it is to use that gun
