Saturn was just too conceptual, too obscure to ever have a proper share in the market.
Granted, that gen was just trash in general and the advent of the Playstation didn't help the steady Nintendo v. Sega rivalry, but Sega didn't do themselves any favors by dragging the Genesis out to death with the 32x and the CD, only to half-ass a console version of their Model 2 board WITHOUT a killer Sonic game to sell to consumers. When Sega cancelled Sonic Xtreme, they might just as well might have filed for bankruptcy.
A Sega console without a scotformer is basically dead on arrival. When Nintendo had the ultra successful Super Mario 64 and Sony had the surprise hits of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, what did Sega have left? NiGHTS into Dreams? Please...

It's not that crazy an idea when you realize that Yakuza has had well over 7 entries and is only getting bigger with each new entry. Really the industry just wasn't ready for that kind of game yet though and Yakuza built off what Shenmue started in order to find that success.

I still can't believe how cringe the models in 3 are. Animations too, jfc.
For context, shenmue 1 and especially 2 was a transcendental experience for me. One of the best memories of my life. Something magical.

I can't bring myself to play 3. It's like a parody, something you'd dare them to do. Shenmue 2 was zen, shenmue 3 seems like it's boring for the sake of being boring.
I think the reason is that a game is a team effort. Yu might have been the guy with the idea, but there was a solid team of experienced devs who loved videogames and knew how to make something fun and coherent. It seems all he had for 3 was a bunch of fuckups.

But they don't realize the context of all of their favorite games, which was a strong team of like minded fellows who were surfing the trends of the industry while it was hot. Maxing out their creative and technological muscles. You can't just Craigslist some people to recreate glory days like that. Shenmue 3 feels like Shenmue to me, except for the stupid new stamina mechanic and combat. Part of the reason Shenmue 3 feels so slow is because it punishes you for running, in a game that is 90% running around and asking people questions. The new combat system also makes the game seem more boring than it is. IN Shenmue 1&2 you had to actually learn the moves and train them over and over to get better. In Shenmue 3 they simplified the combat so now to get better all you have to do is tap the A button during a cutscene. Then they force you to do this as part of the main story. There was no forced training in Shenmue 1 or 2, you just got your ass kicked if you weren't good enough.

Zoomer detected.

The money that went into Shenmue ended up creating software techniques that went into Sega's first party games that released on both the Saturn and the Dreamcast. It's like how the money given to NASA has led to the invention of the Zipper or MRI machines.

Sega had a history of turning their software testbeds into games, Virtua Fighter Kids on the Saturn is probably the most well known example (they were working on better facial expressions for 3D polygonal characters in the virtua fighter engine, made the heads really huge to help, and then just released it as a game because it was funny).

tl;dr - Sega didn't spend 70 million dollars on Shenmue, they spent 70 million dollars over the course of ten years on videogame technology, some of it including Shenmue. You only think they spent that much money on the game because you believe everything you read in clickbait articles.

Maybe he is a zoomer but outside of being a mega weeb how on earth are you suppose to know that?

Whenever I hear Call of Duty having a budget of 500 million I never once thought of that going to research and development.

Don't be butthurt because I'm right, use this as an opportunity to learn something so you don't make shitty threads in the future.

For the record my favorite videogame is Ultima Underworld, which is not rare or a Japanese exclusive.

I like walking simulators. Been playing games for 20 years and don't really care about competition or achievements or whatever. Shenmue is more of an adventure than a fighting game.

Shenmue appeals to a niche, most will find it utterly boring.

Ultima Underworld might be the best game ever made. It has features that modern games haven't even replicated, and was a full 3D game engine that was on store shelves before Wolfenstein 3D was even in production.

But, if you're a zoomer than you wouldn't appreciate it because it was released 20 years before you were even born.

If you fuck around and waste time in Shenmue (until April 15th, 1987) Lan Di will actually come back and kill Ryo in a cutscene.

You have to specifically try to waste a year and a half of in-game time to get that ending, but it's pretty hilarious.

i think its like 1, 345, 67, so far out of 12. 2 was meant to happen on the boat but they skipped it and made it a comic strip. Hoping they make shenmue 4 all last 5 in a big epic to finally find out ryo hazuki gets shot by lan di when a game of spin the bottle goes wrong.
