Hey /vr/, I have the opportunity to pick up a Commodore 1701 monitor for $40. I've heard it's good for retro gaming - I'd be using NES and Genesis input through it.

Is it a good deal? Also, CRT/monitor thread if you want.

not spectacular but as long as its in good condition its an ok deal

I paid that for a 1702. My only regret is that it can't into 3D or prerendered , no Star Fox or Donkey Kong Country.

I'm having trouble finding out what you had a problem understanding. If it's the "can't into" you must be pretty new, it's a widely used way of phrasing things in a silly way on 4chan and many other forums.

That makes no sense

>> No.717784

>>717780
It can't. If you watch Gamecenter CX you'll recall in the USA special he wanted to try DOOM but it wouldn't work, it's because the commodore monitor simply can't display those graphics.

>> No.718192

>>717784
TVs and monitors can't differentiate between 3D or prerendered. If it can't display those games it's because they use a specific resolution/timing it's incapable of using. That's it. Monitors don't give a shit. Also doom runs at the standard native resolution of the snes. The cart itself was crapping out the timing for some reason as you could see it was still playing.

>>717780
Was correct when he said it made no sense, because it doesn't. The monitor doesn't know what's on the screen, period. It just knows how to move the beam and when.

Commodore 64 monitors are Okay tier. For 40$ it's a bit expensive, but you can get it if you want, it's not excessive. However if you find a Commodore Amiga monitor for the same price or even cheaper, take the Amiga one as they accept RGB and they're higher quality.

50$ is the highest reasonable price for a C64 w/ disk drive (30$ for the same computer with datassette) or an Amiga 500.
70$ if you have many peripherals like printers, an bunch of disk drives instead of only one.
75$ if it's the same as above but with a fuckload of floppies.
I'd say for your case 50$, because you only have 10 floppies, and you can get floppies for peanuts.

>>718229

My Amiga, my Megadrive, my Super NES, my Saturn, my Atari ST and some other stuff output RGB natively, so an RGB monitor can be cool. I'm sorry if you live in a shithole where only composite and RF are available...

I don't know why it doesn't work. I tried all 3 DKC games, Star Fox, and Stunt Racers, all of which showed either nothing on the screen or very faded red lines across it. However, Super Mario World and Super Adventure Island, along with all the other games that are simply 2D work fine. It's also worth mentioning that the placebo 3D graphics of some NES games work as well.

I've got a question that's at least semi-/vr/ related, and since you guys actually know shit about displays I figured I would ask here. I decided on a whim to connect a PS2 to my PS1's RGB SCART cable and see if it would work. Well, the connection does work, but my PVM's screen has a severe green tint when I try to play it. I've tried this on multiple PS2s, all of which have the same green tint, and none of my other consoles have this problem, including my PS1 run through the exact same SCART cable. I also tried switching around the BNC connectors on my SCART convertor since I had similar problems when I connected those in the wrong place before, but that just screwed up the color even further. Does anyone know what the problem is here? My monitor is a Sony PVM-14M2U, my SCART cable is this one:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-2q-49-en-70-7f.html
and my SCART convertor is this:
http://www.retrogamingcables.com/sony-pvm-scart-converter-bnc.html
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are a shit load of different consumer Trinitrons and professional Trinitrons(PVMs and BVMs), and a large number of them aren't great for old games.

And only the PVMs, BVMs, and Commodore sets would be monitors. Most Trinitrons are just TVs.

Hi frands. I was the Ausfag who tried to buy the sweet Trinitron from a dude here in Sydney last week. The dickhead turned my $50 offer down, wouldn't budge ("but it's the best of it's kind, you won't find one this cheap!").
