Speaking of Romero, what do you guys think of the documentary he made about the making of SIGIL? Although the intro segment makes it come off as very canned script reading the main part of the doc is actually really interesting for any Doom mapper as it shows him working on maps and explaining why he did things the way he did:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYnB_feVTbs

At the beginning it even shows him reading what people on Doomworld say about his mapping and what they don't like and talking to his wife about things he should address based on it, which I thought was cool. I guess he is too much of a normie for /doom/ though :(

Can anyone help me with Powerslave EX? I really want to play it and I downloaded it out of the mega archive in OP. The readme just says to run Anubis.exe and go. However when I do everything is shifted to left side of my screen and I can't even move the mouse down all the way to the bottom of the visible part. It's like the resolution is fucked or something idk. It looks like it's running is 640x200 or whatever is standard it's just in the upper left on my screen so far a quarter is cut off

Wasn't it already the case in vanilla? It's the whole point of WAD system, Carmack specifically made it so you can load mod content from an external file instead of patching it into the original files. However, what they should have done is put game variables and stuff into WADs as well, to get a Dehacked in vanilla.

>The WAD file system is the primary mechanism that allows easy modding by fans. Mods containing new levels, graphics, sound effects and music are natively supported by vanilla Doom without needing any special third party tooling; they can simply be loaded using the -file command line argument. This is in comparison to Wolfenstein mods, where the main game resource files had to be modified in order to make any change.

Here's a slaughter map (lite, less than 300 monsters) I threw together in a few days as a Christmas gift for this thread. Doom 2, MAP01, Boom-compat, skill 4 only, uses OTEX (included in WAD). You start in a cozy cabin, enter an icy cavern and then raid Santa's North Pole techbase. Enjoy, and have a merry Christmas anons.

Just started Strife. Got the GOG Veteran's Edition. Seems cool so far but why would you drawn these really cool character portraits for NPCs and then fucking put a huge blurb of text over their faces during conversation? Bizarre. I know there were limitations to what they could do for a game like this in that engine but there was no was they could make the portraits smaller and off to one side and the text on a black background or something?

I don't know what the best tutorial for this would be. It's about basic object-oriented programming, and how Doom engines are all a set up to replace things that are previously loaded (such as graphics in Doom.wad) with things loaded later in the order.

Anyway, make a text files named "zscript.txt". In there, put this:

version "4.5"
class BigClip : clip replaces clip
{
default
{
Inventory.Amount 20;
}
}

In the first line, we specify the version. The later the version, the more fancy things you can use. The next line defines a new class, in this case called "BigClip", which inherits (through the : character) from the already defined class "clip". The "replaces" keyword makes this class replaces all instances of the old "clip" class in the game.

i really enjoyed the map and i'm guessing you probably designed a few of my favorite 2048 maps, given how easily you probably created this?

the cyberdemon on the tower was quite brilliant: haven't ever seen this before? i first used him to kill all the zombiemen, then ran past him, then fought him again with the bfg.

about spiderdemon, it may be due to the speed, who knows. i was circling the rink trying to find some "trick" to beat her (i got lucky earlier and revenants were hitting her), and then that happened. she was going pretty fast when it happened.

i think the final cyberdemon area is big enough to be pretty fun and not some sort of scary fight, which i appreciated. a similar-ish area for me is the arch vile room in sunlust 29, where you have to fight some cyberdemons first, but it's cramped and you have less cover.

if you want to try to reproduce spider getting stuck, it happened up against one of the "barriers" that you set up to hide behind and shoot rockets at reveants. iirc she was stuck on one of the lower levels of the barrier, so all together quite a bit higher than the rink height.

There is only one way to play it. The download from moddb comes pre-packaged with Dark Places, the only source port that can run the mod. All you do is unzip the mod somewhere, and then copy/paste your id1 folder into the quake 1.5 folder
>I have the GOG version of Quake.
Beat Quake 1 first. GOG Quake comes with both DOSBox and WinQuake, which are for the most part identical. DOSBox runs in slow-motion for me whenever lots of stuff is on the screen, so I use WinQuake if I want the comfy DOSBox aesthetic; play in windowed mode and use a program called Lossless Scaling to apply integer scaling to it. With all that said, you will probably want a modern source port. Most modern maps require Quakespasm or Quakespasm-spiked to run. If you're gonna play base Quake I recommend Mark V WinQuake, since it comes with software rendering and animation interpolation off (original Quake)

I prefer DOS Duke for a few reasons, but you're probably better off using a modern port so that you don't have to deal with DOS emulation. Last time I tried EDuke32 there was an annoying bug so I'd say use RedNukem (a fork of EDuke). The bug could have been fixed but I don't feel like updating just to check for you

DOSBox's OPL emulation sounds vastly superior to that of any source port that I've come across, Duke or Doom, so for comfy Sound Blaster MIDIs I use DOSBox. For modern source ports, use this music:
sc55.duke4.net/games.php
Create a new folder in your EDuke or RedNukem directory, name it autoload, put the .zip file in there, and enable autoload on start-up

>> No.7166879

>>7166846
No only cyberdemon and spiderdemon are immune to splash damage. Also, each individual rocket might do comparable damage to an SSG blast (~200), but the rockets fire MUCH faster, and deal splash damage

Rocket single target damage varies from 20-160
Rocket splash damage is always the same: 128 damage - distance from blast in map units, so at 128 map units away you are safe from splash

>>7166809
Evil marines CAN get 1-shotted by SSG or rocket, depending on damage rolls, and they move no faster than the player, so you can often insta-kill them if you know where they spawn - open the door and hold fire with the rocket launcher and almost all the time he strafe-runs into one and dies.

Anyway, my main main point is, older wads have problems that people didn't know were problems until map makers just got better and better - for example, in Scythe 2, you often run directly into the monsters that are teleporting in, blocking you and killing you, whereas nowadays running into and getting blocked by warping in monsters is seen as bad design, as well as other bad things like SSG'ing barons is bad, cramped corridors are bad, and health starvation is bad as it becomes more about RNG and reloading/restarting over and over rather than fun/skill

I agree that valiant is fun, but i disagree that "scythe 2 is harder for the wrong reasons"

first of all, valiant is just pretty easy, you can beat many maps with absolutely sloppy play, just yoloing everything however you want and not caring about anything. maybe i sound a bit critical, but lately i sort of enjoy maps that punish you for having bad doom fundamentals, something i learned in plutonia.

while i agree that running around is fun, i disagree that cramped fights are bad, and rather say that cramped fights are one of the best ways to demonstrate basic doom skill: e.g., knowledge of enemy AI, having a good "priority list" of enemies to kill, having good understanding of the terrain/protection (location of columns lol), etc.

Sunlust of course is case-in-point for this sort of basic doom skill.

I like valiant but it did feel like a "power fantasy" on many maps.

>>7166809

Rocket Launcher direct damage + splash damage = 148-288

Fist 24-26
Saw 96-100
Pistol 24-28
SG 68-75
SSG 140-151
Chaingun 88-90
RL (direct hit, not boss) 330-360
RL (boss) 150-170
Plasma 265-278
BFG 2500-2700

As you can see, if you have enough rockets and can score constant direct hits, then Rocketlauncher is slightly better than SSG even against bosses who are immune to its splash.

It doesn't have the means to generate the password for the new bonus levels, but if you're playing those you almost certainly have the means to actually save your game, and the password system was a (actually very good) concession for players who didn't have the memory card stuff.

Looking at them now, there's some 3D modeling, which largely doesn't look amazing, but not bad either, typical for the era. The actual hand drawn sprites and textures are extremely Raven looking, as you'd expect, a few of the textures and sprites look like they could come straight out of Heretic, you could cut out the explosions and energy effects, and some textures, and tell me "These were unused graphics from Heretic's development." and I would 100% believe you, the style is oddly recognizable in its shading, choice of color, and lines. Not sure if it was all developed by Raven Software, I think they co-developed it with the other company (the publisher?).

Viewing gameplay footage, the aiming system is pretty novel, though it appears to be pretty clunky in practice, Goldeneye did that much better by having your aim locked forward as normal, with a hold/toggle button (depending on your config) for that style of fine aim, which could be extremely useful, also it allowed for short but very fast left/right strafing in this mode. It also had an auto-aim (which I always felt held me back, so I always turned it off).
Aside from the nice techno beat, and some of the real cheesy FMV sequences, it doesn't look all that enjoyable though, but then, I'd have to actually play the game to form a real opinion.

There aren't really any Quake mods like that afaik, but plenty of Quake mods add additional enemies, and I find that they're never out of place considering just how diverse Quake's base batch of enemies are. The big one of course is Arcane Dimensions 1.81, so if you've never played it, that's a great spot to dive in. There are also the mods Quoth, and Drake, which have had maps and mappacks made over the years with them, but the most content you'll find are with Quoth, and AD. There's a bunch of history to go over there, like Drake and AD primarily taking monsters from older Quake mods like Zerstorer, Quoth itself, some others over the years, but if you just want the straight and narrow, I recommend:
>AD 1.81
>mapjam3 (Zerstorer)
>mapjam9 (Quoth)
>Warpspasm (Quoth)
>Arcanum (Drake)
>Something_Wicked (Drake)
>ter_shibboleth_drake_redux (Drake)

There's also an enormous mod called Keep still in development with a few maps for it, but one really good one.
https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/egyptoagula_final.html
It's sorting itself out to be the ultimate Quake mod, a compilation of nearly all mods before it, and the Quake mission packs.

And if you're interested in that Doom 4 mod, it's called Slayer's Testament. It's a good romp. Has its own survival maps, its own campaign, and you can play through the original Quake maps with all the weapons and enemies from Doom 2016.

I finally got a taste for Hideous Destructor and it feels nice. Only 2 things are distracting:
>maps are hardly playable with the mod
>random enemy resurrection
The last one got me really confused on Tricks and Traps map. I'd agroed enemies in the room with cyberdemon and then ran back to the room with imps. Then archvile appeared through the wall like a ghost. It kept resurrecting imps and going back and forth between walls, making me fire like crazy (though archvile couldn't be damaged). After some shooty time hell barons seemed to kill the cyberdemon which made the resurrected enemies to lose interest in me. So what the hell just happened? Also please recommend at least somewhat compatible map packs.

Fragshards are free floating, green glowing entities which can resurrect dead enemies, the more damaged their body is, the more shards it takes, healer imps can project fragshards, and barons let loose a bunch of them when they die, hence why Tricks & Traps can get pretty spicy on HD. There's some other things which can produce fragshards, sometimes they appear spontaneously in a level by their own.

There should be some options for tuning things like these, if memory serves.

I made the map but my time was 2:27. I got it by ignoring the pinkies at the start, revenants in the hallway, and archviles after the spider. Luck is a big factor in this map, especially with the spider infighting the revenants, and not getting blocked when running past the viles. If you want to do this faster, rush down the mancubi with the BFG instead of shooting them from below. Overall I'm surprised at how fun of a speedrun this map was.

Enemies are randomly reviving from frag energy in the map, you can sometimes see frag flicker through the air, they look like little green BFG particles. Several enemies have a chance to release a few particles on death, like babuins, healer imps, and barons.
Archies have essentially infinite HP, they work on a flinch system instead, after going into the pain state about three or four times, they blow up, producing a shitload of frag and cursing you, the curse kicks in after a random amount of time and repeatedly revives monsters near you for a bit, it's awful.

Avoid pissing off martians whenever possible, and if one is active, you're usually better off leaving rather than sticking around and fighting them.
That other anon brings up a good point: The more fucked up a corpse is, the harder it is for frag to revive them, generally speaking I don't recommend going full autism and gibbing bodies all the goddamn time, but if you have a spare grenade and you want to make sure healer imps and marines have a hard time getting back up, then go ahead and drop a grenade on their corpse to splatter it real good.

Marines are different from normal zombiemen, by the way, they wear helmets and are generally huge fucking assholes.

One thing you can do with corpses that could be troublesome is to move them somewhere which isn't convenient for them if they get back up, like punting them down a chasm, or shoving them in under a narrow gap where they can't stand up to get resurrected.

Basically don't be afraid to sweep a corpse under the rug like that if you have a good opportunity for it, it can pay off.

The whole reloading thing for 7.76mm is so ridiculous if you analyze it; brass casings need shit like trimming and resizing for reloading, and have a limited lifespan, but that's nothing next to the the matter of taking the caseless 4.26mm cartridge, and grinding up the propellant block (which is known to spontaneously explode if roughly handled), to use as powder.
That last part would be the cause of so many problems, the size of the grain of the powder in a cartridge like that would need to be consistent in size, if the grains break down into smaller particulate it creates more surface area for conflagration and this leads to dangerous pressure spikes. I can't imagine any way to make some kind of grinder which doesn't blow these cartridges up, nor produce a consistent grain size. Maybe by packing and compressing the grains somehow, but I'm not so sure.

It'd be akin to stuff like old Turkish surplus 7.92x57mm Mauser ammunition which you can find sometimes at gunshows, which has been stored poorly at some point and develops extremely excessive and out of spec pressures, being known to make machineguns and semi-automatics explode, and splitting stocks on K98k rifles (hangfires are a common thing also, which makes the unpredictable pressure even scarier, but that's another issue, and actually not something you would need to worry about from the 4.26mm cartridge primers used).

I understand that people like the Liberator a lot in Hideous Destructor, but almost the entire reloading aspect of it would SO not fly IRL. But I guess that's one of HD's acceptable breaks from reality. Pardon my 'tism.

>By the way, what's the point of the battle rifle in plasmagun slot?
It basically fills the role of the vanilla plasma rifle, since HD's interpretation of it is so wildly different. The ZM's tiny little caseless rounds hit a brick wall when faced with shields and stronger armor, it's only really a good weapon for clearing out weaker groups. Liberator's big dick real fuckin NATO rounds don't give a shit what they're fired at, they're going to fuck its skull. They can overpenetrate straight through enemies and even solid walls, and you also don't have to worry about jamming, overheating, or magazine DRM. The ammo's rarer, but as others noted, you can recycle your brass, and you shouldn't even actually have to do that if you pair it with a shotgun to use on unshielded and unarmored enemies.
