You know what's funny? This guy is probably telling the truth. I am just a guy who doesn't like Half-Life. A few months ago when voicing this opinion, I was called Alf. The next time, called Alf again. All I saw was seethe and REEE when I posted about HL being shit and it was funny so I became Alf.

Unlike this guy though (DWTerminator?) who was LARPing for fun, I genuinely think Half-Life is a shitty game that is highly overrated and that killed the Golden Age of FPS and changed the whole FPS landscape for the worse.

And it's not even just me, I have seen other anons doing the Alf shtick. You want to blame someone for Alfposting? Hey, did you know that the guy who did the soundtrack for Quake 2, Sonic Mayhem, also did an alternate soundtrack for Quake 1? It was sending this in to Romero in 96 that got him the job doing Quake 2s soundtrack. It's called Methods of Destruction and only bits and pieces leaked for years and he was reluctant to talk about or release it because it was his first project and he was embarassed by it (it actually kicks ass but many artists are like this with early work). It eventually leaked, thanks to Romero leaked his copy through a friend, and Sonic Mayhem eventually relented after the fact and said he was cool with it being out there.

With so many great boomer shooters being released these days, FPS is back in full classic stride anyway. I was blown away by the level design in Amid Evil. Some of those reality bending levels really fuck with my head and contribute a lot to the gameplay as well. Even better, no bullshit cutscenes or attempt at a story in any of these new FPS games. Just started my first playthrough of Scrouge of Armagon tonight and just beat E1. I'm really fucking impressed by it so far, especially that boulder scene in the Mine level. The first episode is exactly what I wanted more of out of the beginning levels in the base game. Only complaints so far are that the Scorpions are inferior to Ogres in difficulty and fun and they give you WAY too much ammo for pretty every gun.

If you're using Doom Builder the way you get resources working is a bit byzantine.

I'm saying this as someone who has been modding GZDoom for about 7 years now, give or take: it's fucking cursed. I recently moved to Godot as a side hobby so I can do some actual programming without bullshit limitations and so that I can experiment with my own implementations of things, but the GZDoom mentality follows me everywhere. A few days ago I tried to conceptualize the data structure of a backpack, and I kept going back to "lol treat it like a regular inventory item" because I'm too used to that concept, even with ZScript (which doesn't make inventory items obsolete, just makes them a lot more powerful). I also try to follow the Doom actor hierarchy because it's in the comfort zone, which is a terrible fucking idea for a plethora of reasons. I'm telling you, modding this engine damages you by making you think in a way that's unnatural when working with a real programming language (I'm using C# with Godot). You start to think of workarounds when you have the power to avoid those workarounds in the first place. Anon speaks the truth, I do regret it. And I can't say I've failed at modding either, that's absolutely not the reason for how I feel. I just keep finding bullshit after bullshit and at one point it just starts to drive you insane.

The more you know about this engine, the more you wish you didn't.

The weapons are ok, I like his melee options and they cut through hitscanners nice and easy, but the rest of his arsenal is not so fun to use. The uzis are pretty weak and they have a stupid reload for some reason; the riot gun is a cool idea but it feels janky to shoot and the "reload" is barely animated. Frankly it should just shoot four times as fast as you can click before it has to "reload."
Should i just get good? Am I not using the equipment enough? Should i strafe around hitscanners like in Blood?

No, but I also don't see the point in applying and adhering to a quaint formula for no actual reason, when Doom is such a flexible game that it's completely unnecessary. IMO D64 next for sure. I've looked into that a bit and have a few Ideas. As far as the formatting, colored lighting IMO is a must. Naturally it could be done without it but a huge part of D64 is the atmosphere. Are animdef skies only supported in UDMf? (with a lightning effect as well) Then theres fog and reverb. I've been thinking a lot about the plutonia thing while replaying it recently. Compared to modern megawads, plutonia isn't really that difficult, Most levels have less than 100 enemies. If the project goes ahead I think it's important to separate the real plutonia from the memes about it that came after. I'd highly recommend going back to play some random levels from it when brainstorming map ideas.
In another way, plutonia was pretty experimental so it's not like we have to restrict ourselves too harshly.

It's not Sunder or anything, but it does go out of its way to be harsh, the enemy count is low because it uses enemies smartly, you don't need 10 chaingunners in every hallway when just 4 revenants in a modestly sized room can be a ballbuster.

It had potential, it runs well and has good controls (with a six button controller), but it is what it is. Like the 32X itself, it was rushed. Carmack should have gone for broke and made it a 32X+CD game, which would narrow sales down like hell, but it would also have let them make a very full and complete port, the 32X was a mistake anyway, and Carmack likes the tinkering and hacking, he would enjoy the added challenge.

The significant flaws with the port is the lack of levels and the music which wasn't even reconfigured for the hardware, with CD capacity and some time, that's easy to fix, and you can then fit all the missing rotations and sound effects to boot.
