The first one
>Level?
A Toss up between St. Francis Folly - as the first level that feels like the core of what the game was about, and Cistern, the last.

Everything before St. Francis Folly is simplistic. Everything After Cistern becomes increasingly punishing and focused on building up to finale and ramping up difficulty through janky combat. A problem that plagues TR2 and 3 from the very start.

It almost feels bizarre to say I like what is ostensibly 'the water level' of the game, but there's really not *that* much swimming to be done if you pay attention and figure out where you're supposed to be going before you jump into the water, and figuring that out and knowing you got it right is half of the reward.

Depending on mood, either 3 or TLR. But if I had to pick absolutely one, TLR
>Level
I know everyone will take it for bait, because they are universally hated, but:
- entire Karnak complex in TLR (since it's three interlocked levels you go back and forth between)
- Lost City of Tinnos (my version of the game doesn't have unlimited dragonflies)
And from less controversial stuff:
Crash Site in TR3
>Moment
All-time? When I was playing TLR for the first time and finally got out of the Burial Chamber level. You know, circling around in a tiny shaft while a mummy staggers after you and sand is slowly filling the shaft, after a quite challenging level. I felt like achieving something when I did that and the FMV started playing right after.
>Butler moment
I managed to get it exactly once. In TR3, the doors in the kitchen between kitchen and the final part of the race track outside got opened by him. No idea why or how and I was 12 back then, so I didn't even know how to make a print-screen. Now nobody believes me. Plus I doubt I would kept that screen around for 22 years, particularly the first 5 or so years, since my toaster had barely any space on the hard drive and I routinely removed various things for good.

I think he's referring to the fact that the legs don't look feminine, and there's no waist-to-hip ratio. The shoulders are going out beyond the hips, usually a masculine trait; and while you can't see the belly button, where it would usually be placed would put it below the waistline, which is another masculine trait. Overall it's kind of a shit design, it honestly looks like what Naughty Dog did with that character in the Last of Us 2 - make a male character, change their mind and want a female character, end up just adding some tits and makeup to the model and calling it a day.

With some time behind me after finally finishing all of the main entries in the series from beginning to end, I have to say, still, my favorite is TR3. TR2 was close, but whenever I remember it, I get a bad taste in my mouth remembering the last couple levels that soured my opinion on the whole thing. I enjoy the worst levels in TR3 more than I did Temple of Xian or Floating Islands. >Enemies in TR dont do enough damage except for shit like sharks/t-rexes

Enemies in Tomb Raider, especially the earlier games, have a very weird damage system where they don't do damage just from collision, their attacks actually have to connect, and it feels like attacks do more damage based on how much of their attack arc crossed you, meaning damage can vary wildly.

They can do obscene amounts of damage though, especially the raptors in 3. The hitscan weapon enemies can also whittle your health down pretty fast if there's more than one, or you don't know where they're shooting you from.

Besides, enemies are primarily meant to be a nuisance, while the real threats are the insta-deaths and high damage traps that can and will catch you off guard.

>theres medpacks for days
Not in 2, which I don't think you've played, cause if you had, you'd know how they took the criticism of too many health packs in 1 and reduced them by half.

>most enemies are trivialized by jumping up on something where they cant reach
They fixed that from 3 and on, where if you're in a location the enemy can't reach, they will actively try and break line of sight with you. Also, in 2 the enemies could climb.

Search yourself. They just recently redesigned the site, so it's either A) become popular enough for them to care about redesigning it or B) is falling into disrepair and had to make cuts on features that were hogging bandwidth.

You can search by rating, game, and even the type of level (desert, jungle, alien, etc).

Why? Contrary to what others say, the GOG and Steam versions work pretty well, the only change I had to make was using a keypad mapper to my Gamepad so I could force gamepad support, but other than that it's golden with minimal issues (for the most part).

>I'm trying to play the first game for the first time, but my hand keeps cramping up with how stupid it is to turn
Try not stabbing the controller with your thumb, and I hope to god you're using an Xbox gamepad, the d-pad makes it so much easier to control Lara.

>and see why subsequent versions let you save anywhere.
Heheheh, you're going to want to play the PC version of Tomb Raider 3 when you get to it.....console version uses Save Crystal system, where you are required to find save crystals in order to be able to save

It actually DOES increase your damage, by the virtue of increasing accuracy. Not because Lara fires better this way, mind you, but by exploiting game logic. The game calculates your accuracy as rounds fired/rate of fire/movement of the target. By game logic, if you desync your guns, it means the target is shot at twice as often, which means by the same game logic probability of hitting is twice as high. This leads to more shots connecting (since Lara DOESN'T have 100% accuracy), which means more damage dealt in a roundabout way.

Hunting for good levels in 7 and 6/10 is this - hunting.
Going for 8.5 and higher is meanwhile guaranteed good game. Also, the ratings are aggrevated. This means it's not just few autists that decided "Yup, this level requiring engine exploits to finish is 10/10", because shit like this tanks your rating faster than being a long corridor with traps done by a 11 yo in 2002.

Nobody but console autists say that. Word of advice: use a modern re-release. Pick Steam, GOG or Cenega. DO NOT use some "retro" release or "muh original" release, not to mention emulations of those, or you will see precisely why the game has such bad rap.
The whole point of people re-evaluating AoD is two-fold. First, the dust have settled years ago. Second, various re-releases patched variety of bugs and crashes and even made camerawork less nauseating, making the game far more playable than it originally was

I can't speak for later Tomb Raider's, but I know that in Tomb Raider 1 the health system for targets was a flat number, and that number dictated how many times it had to be shot to be killed, some weapons varying in how many times it counts as a "hit".

The pistol's damage though was "1" I believe, so when you desync your weapons, I think it's because it counts each individual shot as its own damage instead of both firing and counting as a single hit. This is just speculative though.

If you could make another tomb raider, what would it have?

>levels
>enemies
>weapons
>outfits
>vehicles
>mechanics (like monkey swing, crawling, etc)

>> No.7170087

>>7169690
On the off chance that some Square Enix employee is mining this thread for ideas, I'll answer genuinely

>Levels
I'd like to start it with some familiarity, starting in the mountains that you have to ascend into the ruins for, then descend from into the jungle, afterwards trying to get to the beach to get back to your yacht, then have the next area be a city-ish environment where she's doing some snooping in-game instead of in a cutscene like in TR1, then go somewhere new like....I don't know....she's kind of been everywhere. You might follow it up with a museum heist where she has to flee using the sewers and then has an aquatic escape, and then she ends up in central Africa, in Angola.

>enemies
In the beginning have it be mostly wildlife, then she starts getting introduced to human enemies, a couple at a time, trying to steal the artifact she retrieved, then she ends up having to do stealth in middle portions more and by the end she's fighting supernatural creatures, actual creatures not just undead. I guess they could be bat-like demons or something.

>Weapons
Dual pistols, single powerful magnum, SMG, automatic rifle, grenade launcher, knife, and a harpoon gun. Maybe throw in grenades or mines as well.

>outfits
Jungle raider, sleuth raider, and desert raider.

>vehicles
jet ski, off-road humvee, and a motorcycle.

>mechanics
Definitely stealth and noise mechanics, destructible environments, hand-to-hand combat, and make it free roam in the sense of the whole game takes place in areas like the open world sections of the nu-trilogy, but without all the bogus collectible crap and have the player decide which route they wish to go, with zones that have different problems like maybe there's an area with high amount of traps, or a high amount of wild life, or structural instability, or human enemies, stuff like that.

>traps
Can't go wrong with the classics, but I was thinking it could also be conceptual like Indiana Jones as well with light traps.

>> No.7170331

>>7169690
Throw all that nu-raider garbage out. Back to tomb raiding formula where Lara is mostly left alone. The main focus is some ancient artifact of great power that is supposed to be in city of Babylon.
>levels
1. Ancient Mesopotamia
- Babylon - 1st level, massive hub with a lot to uncover. Lara needs to find 3 keys to the gate that leads to..
- Underneath the Tower - claustrophobic catacombs and caves where Lara finds remains of mythical tower and the main underground hall is connected to...
- the Sanctuary - Lara is about to reach her goal but the object is not there. Lara finds clues and her journey continues to...
2. Petra
- Lost City of Petra - another large hub where Lara needs to collect objects required to open...
- The Treasury - Lara finds out that someone is looking for the same and in this race there's no reward for second place. Lara sneaks aboard their plane which lands near...
3. Ancient Sudan/Kingdom of Kush
- Meroe Pyramids complex - Lara explores the complex of small pyramids but must be careful not to be caught by rival group. Another thing there is that you do not have to visit every each pyramid. If you are lucky and visit the correct one right at the beginning you can skip the rest. Game uses random generator so the object you are looking for can be at the end of each one but you can't tell or save/load because you are not sure which one to go until you so the final chamber. Each pyramid is slightly different, different paths and puzzles in it. Found artifact suggests that the objective has been stolen by crusaders and brought to...
4. Spain
- The Citadel - Lara has to explore medieval castle in southern Spain. Apparently the artifact she's looking for is powerful enough to bring crusaders (or their remains and skeletons) back from the dead. They are guardians of. ..
- Kings Tomb - the final level. Showdown where Lara has to face everyone. Undead crusaders, rival group and their boss who wants to use the artifact to rule the world.

>> No.7170352

>>7170331
>enemies
Lara is mostly alone, enemies appear in hub sections only. Ruins of Babylon are filled with ISIS terrorists trying to take it down. They are to be avoided as Lara can't fight them in large group. They are supposed to serve as traps than enemy to kill in action style. Same with rival group in Petra. Undead crusaders are immortal too. Basically I don't want to turn it into shooter game. Enemies are mostly to be avoided, adding more sneaking and tactical elements.
>weapons
Lara has 1 gun. It works in similar way to classic double guns but not as cheesy. In addition Lara can pick any weapon she finds but she is not lugging it around all the time. Shotguns, machine guns, riffles.. Flares and torchlight are very useful in dark tombs. You will use these more often than weapons.
>outfits
Babylon - lightweight desert military jacket, white t-shirt, tan pants.
Petra/Sudan - classic blue top, khaki shorts.
Spain - costume similar to main Underworld outfit
>vehicles
For large hub locations Lara can use old school jeep or offroad bike. There are vehicles specific for certain locations, for example abandoned mine carts or rafts, pontoon boats etc.
>mechanics
Crawling is used a lot. I want tombs to be tight, claustrophobic and full of hidden spaces Lara can crawl into. No rope like in LAU or reboot series.Lara still can use pre-existing ones. Option to switch camera to First Person view if you like to play in this mode.
No additional helpful stuff, game does not suggest anything. You are in full control. Hud is not present at all. Lara has only compass and a map in her backpack. I want maximum immersion, you are supposed to feel like it's not a video game with maps, huds, health bars or ammo counters.
>traps
Usual, collapsing floors, fire, spikes, falling rocks, quicksand.... just all the good stuff you can find in tombs and ancient ruins.

>> No.7170363

>>7170331
>>7170352
As you can see it mostly somehow similar in mechanics and gameplay to The Last Revelations in terms of large 'hub' and backtracking levels but also moves forward from each location to the next one.
I also wanted ancient locations but something else than Egypt or Greece and Rome as these are way too overused. Mesopotamia, Babylon, Petra, Sudan... these all feature amazing ancient ruins but they aren't as well acknowledged and that could be interesting.

A new mechanic I would like to see is, because of TR2's heavy emphasis on water, mechanics that emulate water physics and using them to solve puzzles or defeat enemies.

Because I find calssic Lara much more manuvreable and flexible than other character from the similar era. Indiana Jones for example is a true 'tank' as his movement is so blocky and so stiff than Lara can run circles around him. I'm talking about 3D game that came in similar era and is somehow similar to classic Tomb Raiders:

Impressive 3D animation for its time. Atmospheric, 'realistic' world.
Lara was a vastly more fleshed out character than most videogame protagonists, and she was female, which was incredibly rare as the sole playable character.
It's basically Prince of Persia in 3D, and at the time, it was groundbreaking.

Mmmm, nope. If she sold solely on sex appeal, she wouldn't have lots of female fans from that era, along with all the copy-cats that attempted to sell on sex appeal that failed miserably (Deathtrap Dungeon), while also continuing to inspire copy cats that did just as well (Indiana Jones, Soul Reaver, Shadow Man, Oni, Castlevania, Duke Nukem, Drakan, among others). Her being attractive was one of the smaller facets of why the games were enjoyed as much as they were, as proven by the previously stated fact.

Really like the level design, especially the oil rig level, although the sunken boat stage I'm currently on is testing my patience with its bullshit. I think 1 with its choice temple themes is perfect and will probably not be topped, but 2 is a bold (and worthy) sequel with how it goes into an entirely different direction aesthetically and even gameplaywise. I haven't played 3 and laters yet but I'll be really surprised if the novelty balance in 1 and 2 is kept, even if the gameplay is solid.
