Rise of the Triad contains code taken from Wolfenstein 3D, as well as early versions of the Zone memory and WAD file systems from the Doom source code. It also makes use of an early version of Doom's patch_t image format which is close to that used in the press release beta version, indicating that Hall's team was given access to an early transitional source base, perhaps related closely to other contemporary games such as Shadowcaster.[1]

Oddly, the same zone and WAD file code, further modified, also found its way into the source code for Duke Nukem 3D, quite possibly in violation of its original licensing terms. id Software is not known to have ever taken any legal action in regard to this possible misuse, however.

I saw that too, but I didn't take any offense to it since I didn't come up with the idea first (I don't think). *Pretty* sure team TNT did it at some point back in the day.
I did take it pretty far though. Not all the way, but most maps have a unique deathwatch arena. I wish I had done more detailed arenas for more of them, since some are just single room gimmicks. I'll probably switch some of these out... I'll keep the lights on/lights off arena though, I like that one.

I actually haven't played Sigil in deathmatch though. I imagine the dm arenas are probably on par with the single player maps though.

Plutonia had a separate deathmatch only arena in its Map 30. TNT also had an exclusive deathmatch only arena as part of one of its levels, Map 26. I remember also that one of the maps in Plutonia 2 had a separate deathmatch only arena to it, so it's not like the fanbase hasn't done that before. Hell, TeamTNT *was* part of the Doom fanbase, they just got their project bought by iD, and got commissioned to make an extra set to go with it.

Those are the ones that have more lore-type things in them. E1M7 has a lot of in-location details that remind me of the Thief map and how they would have level-based sub-plots and such. E2M7 has more to do about world and where it's coming from. E3M6 has more about the rekkr just being angry and killy.

So I guess one of those three.
But the secret maps are all unique or gimmicky in some facet and that's kind SOUL-y.

It's definitely a map from '94. Texture choices that makes you say "WTF fucking pick a theme and stick with it, goddamn." Nothing really to write home about. It's an early map made by someone who was probably not very old at the time and evidently it doesn't have an exit.

I got a Doom 1 level that was filled with large groups of monsters, nothing too fancy, given that it's very old (originally designed over 20 years ago) and doom 2 along with everything past it exists, the monster fights and ambushes felt rather samey, but there was tons of ammo, some nice powerups and simple secrets. There were some sections where I was trying to outrun a baron stalking me while hastily tearing thru enemies in the way (this was my fault for not just killing the baron and moving on). Overall, it's nothing outstanding, it's a simple Doom 1 level from years ago that is playable and functional.

Just because the rocket explosion doesn't launch you vertically doesn't mean the engine lacks the Y axis, the Arch-Vile can launch you straight up, and if you're running during you will be launched upwards in the direction you're moving (it would be how you get one of the secrets in TNT's map 11, a Vanilla map).

It's fairly common for 32 level megawads to have the middle maps being the weakest part, as a symptom of insisting to fill all 32 levels.
All the good levels tend to be early on to give good early impressions, and late in the wad to give an epic final stretch. So the middle usually ends up being full of filler.
There are exceptions to this, though. I felt Ancient Aliens was the most consistently great during its middle levels, for example.

I always thought that an equivalent to the Terran Science Vessels would be an addition that would add a lot of complexity to many FPS games. A strong floating dude with no regular attack, like the Pain Elemental, but instead of being a summoner it plays the role of modulator, creating AOE damage traps that you have to adjust your position away from, and buffing its allies. Maybe design it to be a little less malicious than the Caco/Pain, with a kind of creepy eerie ambivalence, a floaty head with eyes half-closed that just gazes below and casts its judgment on the player's surroundings. If I ever have the time to make a total conversion or my own FPS I'm definitely going to include something like that.

I played tons of zdaemon back in 2004-2010 back when I had way more free time in my life and when you're playing ffa you're playing ffa, when you're dueling you're dueling. Level design in both looks and gameplay. Plutonia was the best looking wad 96, there was not even competition. It still hasn't aged that badly with looks as the rest 90s wads. The gameplay is the real thing, that hasn't aged at all. Almost all modern top wads are still influenced by plutonia combat. Encounters are well designed, instead throwing monsters just there and there like in original doom 2 and in many 90s wads. Doom 2 had many new monsters, but plutonia was the first to craft challenging encounters by their combinations. Also the jungle theme is cool.

Welp, been about 2 fucking weeks or so since I touched Plutonia and I've finally decided to go back and try to finish it after reaching level 15 "The Twilight". I was fucking sick of playing Plut since the previous few maps had left a really bad taste in my mouth. No shame in admitting I had looked up a guide on how to beat it before booting it up again just now. The firing squad of chaingunners hitting before I could hit them and overreliance on far too many secrets to adquately handle all the challenges of the level just wasn't fun at all to me. Definitely my most disliked Plutonia map by far, even more than Speed. I skipped the secret level and plan on going back to it after I've completed the rest of the WAD since I'm well aware of what Plutonia's secret levels are like.

Still, the burn out from Plut lead to me finally getting started on Quake, beating all 4 episodes on Hard, and now currently playing through it again on NIghtmare, so it was probably for the best. I fucking love Quake so much.

I think "Rocket Jumping" is pretty obviously only a rocket launcher firing at the ground and jumping to increase the knockback. You can't jump in Doom, you can only fall, so there is no rocket jumping there. I honestly believe that any claim that "rocket jumping" existed in Doom is inaccurate. Alright, I rolled a map from '96 called Volatile by Broderick Arneson (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/v-z/volatile).). Fairly solid for a 90's map all things considered- this could have worked as an early map in Hell Revealed. Ammo was a bit tight in some parts, but besides that it wasn't difficult. That said, there was a revenant trap that caught me off guard upon picking up the blue key. I would have gotten 100% kills if the last room wasn't a point of no return. I'll give it a 6.5/10.

Decided to roll again and this time I got a map for GZDoom made in 2008 called Valleys of Bereavement (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/s-u/ssgvob).). According to the description, the author initially started the map as a means to test slopes and 3d floors before turning it into a full fledged map. It certainly has an amateurish feel to it, kind of like the maps you'll find in the DUMP projects. Unfortunately I had to cheat in order to progress in the map, due to a broken teleporter and later on a broken script. I'm not sure if these issues are broken by me using a later version of GZDoom or the mapper's incompetence, but either way, it's disappointing that it couldn't be completed as the author probably intended.

Alright, I decided to give Stray Dog a go, some impressions on gameplay:
>1: The tank drives like shit, it's awkward to steer, even when you get used to it you're going to be making awkward as fuck turns.
>2: The tank also aims like shit, the crosshair lines you up horizontally and that's it, there's no kind of range markings or anything to give you a clue about the absurdly parabolic trajectory of the cannon shells (the lines beneath it are cosmetic), you pretty much just have to point, shoot, and if you miss you'll have to adjust your aim vertically, which isn't conducive to trying to blast quickly moving targets, which is most of them, and that means any kind of ranged combat is tedious and frustrating, while the enemy have an easy time hitting you. You pretty much have to floor it and move towards them to have good chances of hitting them, but that also makes it easier still for them to blast you, so you gotta maneuver like crazy and use cover a lot, it's this weird paradox of enemies being more dangerous the closer you get, yet somehow also less dangerous. I don't even know how to put this.
>3: The 20mm machinegun on the tank is also kind of shit, it scatters wildly and is difficult to use outside of close range, you will miss most of your shots at any distance beyond that.
>4: The only way to heal your tank's damage is to find a welder, which you need to find in every level, and which is SO slow at repairing the tank, it really murders the pacing.
>5: The level design is not very good, it's not really clear where you're supposed to go most of the time, and a lot of things look very samey, in most levels you can just drive through water, but in level 04 this changes without warning and now if you drive your tank over the railings (very easy to do), your tank will just explode.
The times I've had fun driving a tank was the GTA and Saint's Row series, thanks to more distinct level design that's easier to navigate, better controls, and a GPS.

Now on the premise of Stray Dog, clearly it's based on a perception on all the BLM/Antifa rioting and violence that's been going on all this stupid year, and the way it's presented is so exaggerated that it's comical, which I say as a person who find myself disliking BLM and Antifa, a lot of what they do, their rhetoric, and ideology.
Start with the fact that you roll into town with your tank, and you're immediately beset on by bikers chucking molotovs (which somehow can damage your tank), vans taking shots at you (which seemingly do little to no damage), as well as guys on foot or in pickup trucks who are armed with anti tank rockets which will do a lot of damage to you. Now, I didn't maybe pay attention to all the news this spring/summer, but I'm pretty sure that lowlifes who tried to murder Kyle Rittenhouse weren't toting recoilless rifles with shaped charge warheads.

If you look at the whole thing, you see very small groups of rioters who are comically well armed, and then you, as a vigilante, decide to do something about it, by rolling in with your tank, flattening cars, blasting off high explosive bombshells, rattling off salvos with your 20mm cannon, and drinking beer for health. Combine with a bunch of stuff about "Don't worry about collateral damage." at least once contextualized as punishment for the dean of the college level for siding with or being sympathetic to the "DTF" (BLM stand-ins), and the image I get in my mind is of the city on fire as Spongebob declares to his friend that they saved the day, kind of defeats the point of stopping rioting and looting if you yourself is doling out your own millions and millions in property damage, recklessly endangering lives at every turn.

The idea with the level in pic related is to get the blockades out of the way so that firefighters can go and put out these burning buildings, which seems quaint when you're blowing so much shit up and firing wildly around you.

Didn't feel a need for starting melee seeing as you have infinite weak ammo for all weapons when they run dry, a mapset forcing you punch out barons is gonna be a pain in the ass in vanilla doom too.

I can buff the ray damage and the wire damage easily, though if memory serves right I made the hammer have an explosion when you hit the ground, if I didn't make that have +FORCERADIUSDMG, changing that might provide the extra close range damage you're needing to kill a cyberdemon quicker.

I also need to nerf the Solar Pistol because I fucked up with the math and it does WAY more damage than necessary right now. Though I should probably have a few more things on the todo list before doing any updates.
