7142215 No.7142215 [Reply] [Original]

I recently picked up a Sony GDM-FW900.

After I plug the VGA input, am I just supposed to configure the resolution/refresh rate preset, image position, and colors as I like them?

The auto-configure doesn’t center the image (the bottom is cut off) nor does it stretch the image to the max size possible (but still respecting the ratio), that’s why I’m asking.

Other people with the same monitor could you tell me if it’s normal or if your monitor behaves the same?

Old and vintage are different. If they weren't then old cars would be selling for the same as vintage cars. I consider things released in the 80s, 90s and early 2000 as retro. 20s to 70s is vintage. Before 20s is antique.

>> No.7143382

>>7143350
But retro, by definition, means an imitation of something old. Actual retro video games are pixelshit indie stuff or like octopath traveler. Vintage means basically anything of quality from a past generation. With antiques being from several generations past with much of the value coming from the age itself.
The word vintage doesn't quite work for software because it applies to physical objects, but it sure as shit works for crt monitors.
The word also denotes a certain amount of quality. so, it may not be completely applicable to super mass produced kitchen TV sets, but it definitely applies to higher end professional monitors.

What websites and search terms can one use to find good CRTs monitors? When looking up nonspecific monitor terms (vga, old), it's entirely shitty 5:4 LCDs, but when being a bit more specific (tube, crt) they're all either shitty sub-70kHz or price gouged 75-80kHz tubes. Are there better sites than FB marketplace, offerup, and craigslist, or is there at least a way to exclude keywords in searches there? There was a brief period of a week or two where people panic sold a bunch of shit. I think some cities/states had shut down, a stimulus package hadn't been agreed to yet, and it may have been the end of the month. Dirt bags were selling stuff CHEAP. As soon as those checks started going out, prices shot up.
I can't imagine crts going back down, but people might stop trying to squeeze every cent out of the shit they sell once the economy levels out. Chinese flash carts and ODEs are a decent alternative that seem to get looked down upon for no good reason. Retro gaming is never going to get less popular and consoomers are never going to stop basing their personalities around their material possessions, so your average honest old timer gamer is going to have to make some concessions and go the flashcart/ode route. Stuff like soft modded wii and opl on ps2 are just so easy and need no technical knowledge at all. I'm glad I got all my crt related shit for free or dirt cheap. well the crt has its factory set modelines that have been precalibrated for average users. Given that computers often put out slightly different front/back porches, sync timings, etc, the image is going to be slightly uncentered to allow for that range of timings.

I want blog about the dying days of one of my FW-900. This one was not in the best condition when I first got it, it was not as sharp as it cold be and it was a bit lighter on the colors than its twin, but I couldn't afford any other monitors. It worked well enough for a decade and a half but about a couple years ago it finally started showing signs it was dying. When it was turned on, it would revert right into standby/error mode. The monitor had to be turn on and get acclimated to a fully dark screen to "warm up" for a few minutes, then turned off and back onto the same black screen (I fullscreened a video at the beginning/end) for a few more minutes. Any fully white screen or overly bright image would cause it to go back to the standby/error mode. If it had properly warmed up, it could handle any image, even fully white ones, so long as it was powered on. Now even that workaround is no longer a solution to get it going. So here I am with a husk of a monitor that I have to pay money to dispose of, yet I don't have a replacement. I loved this FW-900, it was great for computer games and the 360. I wish there were someone around here that can service and revive it, as I still have not seen any monitor that's affordable which outputs a great game image. can anyone tell me is the VGA cable for this monitor should still be working?
pins 9, 12, and 15 broke off (actually, 9 might not have been there to begin with)
from what i understand from the pinout of VGA, these aren't video or sync signals and aren't grounds, but 12 and 15 seem to be for "monitor ID". i can only assume that's for communicating information to the PC it's connected to for supported resolutions or something?
i can't test it at the moment properly, as I have a shit adapter DVI-D to VGA adapter that i dont trust entirely. im not at home, so i don't have the PC ill eventually be using this with (which has native VGA)
fwiw, this monitor was working just fine a week ago before the pins broke today.

Because TV's generally use one single 15khz mode which is standardized and TV's are calibrated at factory to that. VGA cards can output just about whatever they wish and there are many algorithms such as GTF and CVT to calculate the actual timings. Auto calibration functions cannot actually know how the signal looks on the CRT, there are few reference modes that are calibrated at factory, and other timings are extrapolated from them, with varying degrees of success.

There is an auto setting which is good for widescreen PC images where it bumps the image to the sides and determines a decent starting point. However, you should manually set the height and width. The monitor does remember what you did last set for this scan area per resolution, so when I turn on with a 640x400 DOS image, a 4:3 800x600, 1080p, or my computer's 1920x1200, it automatically goes back to those dimensions. I made some tiny marker indicators to what I have measured out for a centered 4:3 and 16:9 display on its bezel. That's the thing with analog displays, I mostly adjusted to what looked best to me. I am not a professional and I do not have the expertise as others do in this thread, so there may be some more advanced calibration which needs to be done for a fine image. Just yesterday I learned of this G2 and Windas thing, but I think I lack some sort of calibration equipment.

It's so bad here in Australia, any aus anons will know what I'm talking about. Everything is fucking expensive/overpriced to shit it's ridiculous.

Around the first half of 2018 was probably the last time you could find a decent crt for free/dirt cheap. People were just getting rid of them. Then for some reason all of a sudden prices starting shooting up and now even some unknown shitty Chinese brand tube with composite only mono audio output TV will go for $50 plus with "great for retro gaming!!!" in the listing, when it reality it's just a dogshit TV.

PVMs are near impossible to find, and if you do find one, it's most likely a little overpriced 7" one. The age of cheap crt's is over.

My advice to aus anons is to get a pc crt for cheap (you can still find them), and get a retrotink/ossc. Should be good enough for all rgb gaming. If you're into light guns, try and find a cheap crt.

Mine is currently not even plugged in as Im going to move soon, so thank you for the advice.

I was very lucky and found one 1h away from where I live here in Italy. It’s in amazing condition, and has been used very little as an office monitor. I got it for €650 ($700), which is way under “market-value” (but probably still a lot compared to how much it went for few years ago).

I have a question for all anons to answer, would you agree that region-free monitors either voltage-wise (such as the PVM-20L5) or standard-wise (such as the PVM-2950Q) are more valuable than monitors relegated to a specific voltage (such as a PGM-200R1J) or a specific standard, even if the latters have good qualities like bigger screens?

outputting 240p over a computer can be pretty difficult. On linux it's easy, but on windows you need the right drivers and hope your graphics card doesn't have any problems with them. Also, you will need an rgb to YPbPr converter, which you can find on ebay. If you have linux, you just need to use xrandr to set the right modeline. On windows, look up 'crtemudriver'. Good luck

You wont get analog output from a modern card, if that's what anon has. Also, there's no way of getting a progressive picture from the s-video out of those cards, gotta use the DB15.

If anon wants to connect a PC to a display via composite or s-video, then a transcoder is needed to convert RGB (VGA) > NTSC video.

From what I could figure out their Diamondtron lineup went: MT-9021E>Vision Master Pro 500 (MT-9221E)>VMP 510 (A201HT)> VMP 514 (HM204DTA)
And to make it more confusing VMP 501 (A101GT) was just a smaller variant of the 510 rather than being directly related to the 500.

And just because the magazine listed the non-pro/shadowmask series that lineup should go like this: MF-8221E>MT-8721E (VM 500)>Vision Master 502 (S102GT)
Just so things are even worse the MT/MF designation they were using at the time doesn't clearly explain whether or not it would be a grille or mask. Like the MT-9021E was a 21" diamondtron, and the MF-8617 was a 17" one, yet only the aforementioned MF-8221E was a tridot. They did keep using the MF designation for shadowmasks since the Vision Master 350 had a model number of MF-8515G but swapped over to a more standardized A prefixed diamontrons and S prefixed tridots. And so far I haven't seen anything contradicting this but the 500 model was the only one to share both a pro and normal variant.

For the sake of argument, they're completely and utterly indistinguishable from each-other. Municipal e-waste is a fucking treasure trove if you can get in. I’ve managed to get my hands on some really nice units checking the local bin (really a covered shipping container) about once or twice a week. That’s how I came across a Lacie Electron22Blue and an HP P1110. Obviously you can’t test these on site, and I’ve had some real shitters (there was a Dell P991 that started sparking and smoking when I tried turning it on, not good). Unfortunately the old boomer who used to work at my waste site retired, and he has since been replaced by a Bangladeshi Nazi. So I have to be way sneakier than I used to be.

Otherwise just check local classifieds often. I try to set search alerts for things like “old monitor” or “Sony monitor”, because typically “CRT” brings out the chucklefucks who want $100 for some 60 Hz flickerfest. When you go to test, be sure to bring a program like the Nokia monitor test and make sure that things like convergence and colour accuracy are good. If the tube is turned up to max brightness but is still really dim, it’s no good. Using these methods I managed to come across a Sony G500 someone was selling for $20 (it was listed as “old school computer monitor”). But sometimes this method is not enough to defeat the true autists. When I sold my LaCie, I had a guy who not only had search alerts, but also checked the classifieds manually every 3 hours. This is sort of the same as my deal. I live basically in the middle of nowhere, but I have 40 acres of land and plenty of sheds. Whenever I see a CRT come up near me, I take the really good ones to use, and the more mediocre ones I keep in the shed (I also have a bunch of older, interesting computer equipment- a G3 AIO Power Mac, a few Amigas, etc). If I didn't take them, they would go to the county's waste centre, where they'd cut the cords off and then just stack CRTs in a warehouse. At least the way I'm doing it, they may find some use again.

I post the mediocre monitors for free every now and again, and sometimes you will get a retro enthusiast who comes to get one. I'm perfectly willing to let them go, I just don't want them to be destroyed.

Wouldn't even bother if it didn't wasn't a 60hertz capable set which are kinda rare here in europe.

And here's a picture of the problem in action. If I set contrast/brightness/saturation even at anything above really low then it gets these awful red lines all over the place. For some reason this is less of an issue in some games like Sonic and Ristar but the 240p test suite color bar test still did show the issue.
In Mario 64 I also get a ghost mario as if seeing double. My understanding is that I might have a convergence issue? But after quite a while fucking around with the rings I've only slightly improved the situation.

There shouldn't, but in practice converters always output asynchronously from their own framebuffer and apply some shitty blurring deflicker-filtering, overscan compensation and there's always at least one frame lag and broken interlace. Some graphics cards with S-video outputs using can be encouraged to output plain modes with hacks, but otherwise the only cheap way to get decent output is with custom modeline from (HDMI-)VGA and RGB-NTSC/PAL conversion in analog domain with some DIY solution using CXA1145 or similar encoder.

Luma delay and chroma band pass filtering is done with external components and then passed to amp stage inside the IC which outputs to the composite out.

Probably better to forget CXA1145 unless you can butcher one out from something with those components as the delay line is probably hard to come by nowadays. AD725 only requires a crystal oscillator and some resistors and capacitors.

So I think I've somewhat narrowed down the problem.
While messing with the convergence rings and rbg pots inside has somewhat mitigated the issue, I noticed that overdriving the signal using some funny hardware, I could also get the issue going. I suspect reason I see much worse issues with N64 than Mega Drive is cause N64 signal is much hotter?
Since it's highly dependant on the input signal this makes me think the tube itself is thankfully not quite dying yet and it's probably just a matter of tracing down the right caps/resistors and replacing them. In the mean time, could I just place a resistor in line with the video signal to step it down a bit?

>> No.7170936

Oh and worth noting that while in Mario 64 it's only the red that's the problem, in the PS2 menu it's blue and in some other games it's white like the menus in Wipeout 64. which further makes me think it's not the tube itself.

I had one of these when I was in university, just because the previous tenants left it behind. It was a pretty good set for free, but I remember the geometry was always kind of off. Maybe I just didn't know how to fix it at the time, but a lot of people seems to think the geometry on flat trinitrons is permafucked.

I personally preferred my parents' KV-35V45, or my current JVC AV-36D104. The curved screens on both were much nicer overall.

Also, protip, use shoulder dollies to move these large things. My friend and I managed to get the JVC moved without much trouble, just felt like giving a slightly fat girl a piggyback ride.

>>7170448
I have a friend (same guy who helped me move the JVC) who uses one of these (or something similar) for his modern consoles. Honestly you are better off with a plasma screen, because (a) neither have motion blur, (b) both have input lag, (c) both have great blacks, and (d) the plasma is 140 pounds lighter and takes up way less space. So essentially an HDCRT has all the drawbacks of a Plasma without any of the benefits.

Chill. It's Winter sun from England. It does hardly any damage. Plus, I wouldn't bring it home all wet.

use a heat gun and some ethanol to remove the shitty plastic layer and glue from your tube and it'll look better than you ever remember a tube looking it looks like great art or something

Anyone know what the load bearing ability of the OG xbox is?

Also is there any way to fix the interlacing using one of those cheap RCA to VGA boxes?

Would I needed a modded xbox for that? Genma onimusha is the only game not available on another platform now. Very sad that capcom sucks.

Video options on the xbox just change the display to letterbox or widescreen

Old furniture from charity shops. New and durable is expensive.

I'm the anon with the monitor that has a burning smell. Guess I found the problem. That's a leak, right? Is it fixable, or too much work for a Packard Bell?

>> No.7183196

That's a transformer. And that substance more likely is just glue from factory.
Leaks and stink are doing of capacitors. You won't spot it like that.

Thanks. If a capacitor is bad, doesn't it mean something won't work? Because the monitor works fine, apart from the audio not working. Maybe it's a capacitor for that?

>> No.7183530

>>7183354
Very may be.
It may be hard to spot which one is leaking.
Check how people repair or find them, channels: 1) Retro Tech, 2) 12voltvids. Second one is more down to Earth, check some random vids, there's many PSU related problems with caps.

I've smelled and listened to my TV and it's the same. Turns out it's just ozone, but the monitor leaks more. Also found out there's no speaker inside, it's just an audio passthrough. Guess I'm good. Been running it for a few hours and no weird noises nor flickers.
Now I'm trying to get Dreamcast and Saturn emulators to work.

Okay so I replaced my xbox fan with a generic 80mm PC fan that was cut to fit inside

And putting the CRT on top of it must have caused enough pressure to stop the fan from spinning due to it hitting the shroud, so I just overheated my xbox in the middle of a game. RIP lol

it seems fine though, going to add more cooling, that tiny heatsink gets so damned hot.

Shit's truly fucked. Last time I got a semi-reasonable deal was last year, $50 for a 2001 Viewsonic trinitron, great condition.
>>7153194
Only for smaller tubes. Anything over 14" has a great chance of getting fucked to oblivion in shipping. I've imported two 14" Sharp multisyncs, and only one survived shipping intact. Packed really well, but nothing is foolproof.
