Picked up a copy of Castlevania Chronicles off of archive.org
and I'm really enjoying it. What do you all think of this game?

Also retro Konami general just to keep the thread floating.

I think hipsters have latched on to this game now that everyone has played Rondo. Which doesn't work as well because this game is on the fucking Playstation.
Easily the worst 16bit Castlevania game. Sadistic level design, horrible player sprite, heinous music remixes.
Would still play it over SotN any day.

reminder that the PS1 port of it is flawed (yes, original mode too), it has some glitches in the programming that changes the way enemies behave and the way damage is done.
Just emulate the X68000 original.

I wasn't even aware this game existed, let alone was reviled by purists. You really think the remasters are that bad? I've only so far played with the original sound chip version and think it's pretty good. Also what glitches are they regarding enemy behaviour?

Just because you suck at vidya and got filtered by the best 4th gen CV game doesn't mean it's bad.

Played it a lot this summer, it's a great game with a killer soundtrack. I need to get back at it and learn the prison and final stages in order to 1cc it.

T b h if you never played the original, the port is perfectly fine. Id like to try the og though.

Makes no sense, more people will still have played Chronicles. Especially if you don't count the PSP rehash. You just seem to hate the fact that it's hard. In which case, play Chronicles' arrange-mode.

>>7141604
I think all this is true. But you have bad taste if you think the new music and Simon sprite is worse. Sounds like he only gave the first level a chance, which admittedly is a pretty cheesy remix of Vampire Killer, but at the time it might have sounded more hardcore. The rest of the soundtrack is infinitely better thanks to CD audio and the influx of better composers to the industry.

They also have a patched version so you can enjoy the new Simon mode with the classic knock-back damage

>> No.7141813

Unless you're playing Chronicles like that (new Simon/music, preferably knock-back) Chronicles isn't worth it over the original due to the issues people mentioned above. But I agree that the new art is great, and the game is already hard enough if you don't continue-spam, so people are just trying to feel elitist when they dismiss Chronicles/Arrange version completely. But yes, why not just emulate the original if you're not playing arrange mode anyway?

It is a decent Classicvania. I only played original, not arrange mode. I thought the laurel and the downward whip were cool.

Yeah I play Chronicles knock-back patched arrange-mode. X68000 is the only system I've ever found a hassle to setup emulation for, and doesn't seem worth it for a single 16-bit game. Chronicles has better music and graphics anyway, even if there are AI and hitbox issues. So typical of Igarashi to shit on Castlevania's legacy, if it was a perfect port it would be superior with no contest.

One of the better Classicvanias.

PSP counts. While the "main attraction" is an awful looking remake, it contains the full original game as a bonus.

The PS Arrange mode is very nice and well balanced. That version of game is one of the better ones in the series. Pity that the CGI intro does not look nowhere near as good as the X68000 original.

One thing of note that I'm sure a lot of people have missed is that the USA version is missing a couple of sound clips. Namely, the dolls on level 6 have voices in the Japanese original.

Just goes to show you that whenever you play a localized version of a Jap game you will be robbed in one way or another.

Another little known goodie is the hidden menu that allows you to set the date and time. The clock on your screenshot and the picture on level 7 will reflect that!

and the remake is reverely underrated. includes better level design, better bosses, and extra stuff.
plus, it doesn't look as bad as people say, especially if playing on an actual psp. many of the original Rondo backgrounds are very drab but on the remake they added a lot of detail.

i wonder why the voices of those scary dolls were removed.

>> No.7144616

>>7144084
My guess is because their voices were in Japanese and they could not be arsed to rerecord them again in English. Still, a very unfortunate removal as it is super creepy when you hear them talking for the first time
