pic related is PB without any other mods. do you mean these coronas (coronae?) around the lights? if so, these are just extra billboard sprites placed by a mod on top of objects.

Not really 'news' but i thought you guys might be interested in this: I'm the guy behind the '4chan dospack' that has been mentioned here from time to time, packed with pretty much every relevant 90's DOS shooter which are highly optimized to run within DOSBox (made my own interactive menu for that). The megalink for it is here: https://mega.nz/folder/CldGAahb#yn_8LkRHraywPgKJMp5pqA

Also i have my own Windows 98 games section filled with based shooters and other games alike (No One Lives Forever, Blade of Darkness, Undying etc.), they are all optimized to run on Win7/8/10 and received quality of life updates.
Link for those here btw: https://mega.nz/folder/3t8nzSIS#947kyMN6Z80f8HS7q2XlqA

A very big amount of time went into downloading all the games/soundtracks/sourceports and configuring them as perfect as possible (the DOS games will run smooth thanks to custom settings for each game, and the Win98 games are all running on 1920x1080@120hz).

From time to time i share the links here on /vr/ but perhaps it would be nice if my projects can have a 'permanent' place here in the OP. I'm sure it will be of value for many people who have trouble getting the games to run. Also they are a source of important files, think about DOS executables that are hard to find, or soundtracks included with games. Also i still update the games from time to time if i find some new fixes, but the links will always be the same.

Anyway sorry about the long post, there's much more i could tell about which fixes were applied etc. but probably it's best to check out the Readme's in the mega links i posted. Cheers!

Thanks for the support anon, and yeah RTCW is in there, running on IORTCW sourceport (derived from ioquake3 codebase). So it runs natively on full HD resolutions. Also uses updated OpenGL renderer instead of the deprecated d3d+3dfx renderers that normally come with RTCW, so you won't need DgVoodoo or NGlide.
>>7133748
Thanks! Yeah it's quite a big effort (working on both projects on and off since early '19). But luckily i get pleasure out of it, it's kinda my hobby i guess to get games running as good as possible (and i like the share them). The DOS games will run without any issue since they all run through the DOSBox emulator, but if any Win98 game gives trouble on Win7/8/10, i'll be here to offer assistance.

Here's some feedback for Hellevator anon.

The attention to detail is very nice, especially considering that these maps were made in 3 days. The small indents around windows and walls make the levels feel like tangible places. The tiny sector details like food / silverware / water coolers etc remind me of Build level design. I've only played the Lobby and Cafeteria so far but I'm really digging it.

The enemy placement is good so far, I especially liked the opening fight in the cafeteria level.

Nice job guys

-Tom Hall

>"GADs (Gravitational Anomaly Discs) were a pain in the butt to program. Each one you see had to have it's height set in hex in TED. For making really long stairwells, it was annoying, since you had to tell the editor "OK, I want on here, and I want it this high". To make a working stairwell, you had to have them so far apart from each other. It was very easy to screw up. Tom Hall had this piece of paper he made which had the coordinates for a working stairwell. It stayed taped to his monitor all during development, and even when he started working on Prey. When Tom left to go start up Ion Storm, he gave that paper to me where it stays to this day."

Current amount of available storage space will not suffice for all those games on that list, especially the ones from 2015-2020. Isn't the latest COD like literally 250GB? Not worth collecting anyway, the cutoff point should be much sooner, maybe until 2008ish. That's the nice thing about retrogaming, you can have hundreds of games for a few GB's.

I find it funny that John Romero has always disavowed the "John Romero is about to make you his bitch" ad and said that he would never ever say that to someone - one of the reasons he usually gives is "Because first of all that's gay haha. And I would just never say that, its not me". I know he specifically says this in the Matt Chat interview he did on YouTube and I am pretty sure I have seen him say it elsewhere. It's always the "Dude thats gay lol" joke and then the "That's just like not something I would ever say".

But here we have him telling this dude, just some guy talking shit on usenet, to drink his fucking knob and as you can see in this passage from Masters of Doom, asking Shawn Green "Who's your fucking daddy?". "Suck it down" was one of his well known trash talk catchphrases which already sounds pretty fucking gay.

Now, this doesn't prove John Romero is a literal butt fucking faggot. No, it suggests that "I'm about to make you my bitch" is EXACTLY the kind of thing he would say and this motherfucker was probably 100% on board. Hell, he may have thought it up for the PR guy himself.

I listened to the Retronauts podcast Doom episode recently, its actually pretty good because Jeremy Parish and Bob mostly shut the fuck up, Jeremy was a Macfaggot who played Marathon in the 90s and Bob is just a faggot who didn't play FPS, so a guest from another podcast and guy who actually worked for PC Gamer magazine in the 90s and interviewed all the id guys both in the early Doom days and then later when Romero was at Ion Storm, etc. Even this journalist, when the infamous Daikatana ad comes up, says "And you know, he had nothing to do with that, it really wasn't his idea."

Like do any of you guys remember the infamous BitchX blog? An anonymous person going by BitchX started a blog where they were posting ALL KINDS of dirt on Romero and Ion Storm Dallas and shitting on him for his outrageous spending and partying. They were posting shit no one else would know unless they were very close to Romero/Ion Storm. Romero was fucking furious.

BitchX was never actually identified for sure - but it seems to be mostly accepted that it was Stevie Case aka Killcreek, who had been in a relationship with Romero (and who he bought fake tits for)

Why would there be? The guy was never a hardcore cocaine addict, he didn't have to go to rehab or wnything, he just liked to party and he partied pretty hard. Like I said, this was somewhat common knowledge of those in the know back then, I assumed it still was honestly. I recall DaBug (Matt Hooper) and Zdim (Rich Carlson) and Steve Roscoe also being very hard partiers who could keep pace with John.

Is there a way for Renderstyle Shaded not to make models act like this when it comes to layering?
What you see here is an actor model of a ring using Renderstyle Shaded - as far as i know, Shaded inherits from the renderstyle translucent, which fucks with models a lot.
I'm guessing this is one of the issues with it - additive also inherits from translucent too

Is there any solution to this layering problem or is it a hard coded problem with no fix beyond editing the engine itself? Engine used right now is Zandronum 3.0 .

I got Fordham Doom from '99 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/d-f/fordham).). A fairly handsome castle level with decent lighting and architecture, based on areas in Fordham University. A few cool effects like a deep-water area and the windows in pic related. Short enough to avoid being confusing and has a habit of teleporting enemies around, something I see more in modern wads. Only a small amount of people will appreciate this, but the head honcho of Arcane Dimensions deleted his twitter for some reason, and so the detailed explanation of the latest AD's Chaos mode was lost. Luckily I have pic related.

Basically, aside from simply hitting the chaos pillar(s) in the AD hub world, you can go to the console and customize your chaos mode using scratch3. The image is pretty self-explanatory like fixed hp vs variable hp, but here are some further details:
>Family
Ogres in id1 based maps will be replaced by any of AD's variant ogres like mace ogres, hammer ogres, flak ogres, armored chainsaw ogres, etc. Soldiers will be replaced with nade soldiers, you get the idea. All AD armored ogres have Z-targeting i.e. they can aim up or down at you. Default ogres do not have this.
>bbox
Not limited by families, but to be honest I cannot tell by what degree.
>Markie mode
Shamblers can replace soldiers, and other total chaos.

Notes:
-You can play chaos mode with any id1 based map, even the ones made back in '97, and then all the way to 2020. Maps with their own custom progs/content will not work, however. Theoretically they could if you added their content to AD's paks, but I haven't bothered to try.
-Items are also randomized to a degree
-Upon every death, unless you load a save, the map will load a different seed (different items and monsters this time).
-Press R to display the current seed. You can share your particular randomization with your mates, race each other, etc.
-If a particular seed is too difficult, you can give yourself the Widowmaker shotgun with these console commands, in order: developer 1, and impulse 205. You'll get a bunch of debug relevant console text, so simply type developer 0 to turn them off.
>>7136552
Unfortunately you will have a hard time running T_S on toasters, but QSS also has lots of fancy doodads that make it a bit more demanding. I get 70 frames on vkQuake, which also comes with QSS' max 72fps fix.

Unfortunately no. This is an issue with sprite sorting and has been present for a long, long time. The devs are aware of it but no good solution exists. It's not the case with Normal-styled models, but is an issue with translucent models and flatsprites. From what I've been told, it can theoretically be fixed for Normal-styled flatsprites as well, but not for anything that has transparency.

That webpage also has music packs for Duke Nukem and other games. To use the Duke Nukem or Blood music, put the .zip in a new folder called autoload inside your douk or Blood directory and enable autoload upon start-up in EDuke32 or RedNukem or NBlood or whatever. Note that you can change the music by replacing the file with an mp3 or whatever with the same filename. To use the music packs with GZDoom, load the music .zip file itself as if it were any other mod.

If you explore that site you'll find the SC-D70 music packs. The SC-55 packs for Doom and Duke are superior to the SC-D70 ones, but the SC-D70 music pack for Jimmy's Plutonia MIDI project is especially good and there isn't an SC-55 one (yet). However, I don't know how to get it to work outside of GZDoom, sadly.

Metal from '96 (/idgames/levels/doom2/d-f/etpt7). Not bad for 96, good use of Doom 2 monsters for the most part. Secrets involved wall-humping so I gave up on them, it gives you a plasma and rocket launcher for free so you don't need them. There were teleporters next to each keycard that bring you to the door they need which cut down on backtracking. I struggled to find an interesting area to screenshot but it was marginally better than the TNT level of the same name. Some custom sounds from PSX Doom were nice. 3/5

Pretty basic level design, too many big empty hallways, but each one has different texture and colors. To get BFG for the final room you need to kill a Spider-mastermind, but since it's placed in one of hallways you can just peak-a-boo it to death and bait his kids into shooting him.

The Twin Brothers from '95 (/idgames/levels/doom2/s-u/twins). A very fun and fast paced level for 95. Fairly large and with many different areas. Great monster usage and many traps that keep you on your toes, and none of that resource scarcity BS. The main gimmick involves keeping a voodoo doll alive in one room, which wasn't used to it's full potential since he's very easy to not kill. The layout would have benefited from making this the central area and branching off from there. The secrets involved revisiting old areas to find new doors opened which was pretty nice. The new music has a triumphant feel but the new sounds are lame and obnoxious. 4/5

Trying to get these to work in Crispy Doom right now. It has built-in support for prerecorded soundpacks, but the default method (placing correctly named files in %username%\AppData\Roaming\crispy-doom\music-packs and selecting MIDI/MP3/OGG/FLAC in Setup) seems to be working only with IWADs, since any music present in PWADs still has the highest priority. I guess I'd wave to pack these in a PWAD, just like Buckethead's SIGIL_SHREDS_COMPAT.wad.

Or maybe it would be easier to simply remove existing music from the main SIGIL PWAD.

Pretty short, but alright for 95. Every room seems to have its own place - first room has like 30 shotgunners, this one has two spiders, dark hallway that leads to the key with chaingunner trap, stairwell room where you can't shoot gunners at the top and a room where lightswitch only works for a moment and you have to navigate around baron and mancubus in the dark.

Anyway, I've done some listening, and, while the Doom/Doom2/TNT/Duke Nukem SC-55 music packs are way superior to anything else, this Sigil music pack doesn't seem to have been recorded from an actual Roland sound canvas as the sound quality doesn't seem as good. Also, like mentioned earlier, the soundfont Jimmy uses here ( https://jamespaddock.bandcamp.com/album/sigil-the-midi-soundtrack ) is RLNDGM, not SC-55, and the music actually sounds better through your normal midi player + RLNDGM rather than with this music pack

That's a wrong filename. If you're playing Plutonia, correct filenames are the ones in the "Lump" column on your screenshot. If you want to have different music on MAP06 and MAP31, you should have different d_the_da.flac and d_evil.flac files in your music-packs folder.

Jimmy designs his music for the default Windows MIDI player since that's how most people end up experiencing it.

I did some more listening and, as much as I like the SC-D70 music pack of plutmidi.wad, I think the midis sound even better with either RLNDGM for a classic midi sound or Mysung Kite for a very rich high-quality sound. Test out all three for yourself: the SC-D70 music pack, or the midis with the Mysung Kite or RLNDGM soundfonts. I liked Mysung Kite the most. Feels wrong to say, but I'm pretty sure I love it more than I do Doom. Parts of Doom 1 and 2 and especially TnT drop the ball really hard or aren't as consistently good as the first episode of Doom, but Quake stays consistently great and super fun to play throughout.
Kind of wish it used it's sci-fi aspect a bit more beyond the beginning levels of new Episodes. The fucking Spawns are a blight on an otherwise fantastic final Episode, but aside from some minor gripes like a lack of actual bosses like Chton past E1, Quake is fucking amazing and defnitely one of the best shooters I've ever played.

SNG is great, but it's ammo is too precious, meaning I always feel like I have to hoard nails for it instead of just having a good time blasting the fuck out of whatever comes my way. SSG isn't like that, you get too many shells, honestly. Not to mention that I've always just loved a good double barrel in any game more than bullet hoses.
As for grenades over rockets, I prefer the slight skill required to properly arch a grenade over distances as well as the slower travel time. That, and hitting a fiend mid-jump just feels so much more satisfying when it's a grenade instead of a rocket.

Only problem is that some of the monsters wouldn't really work for the rape thing, I mean, what's the Arachnotron gonna do (and conversely what would you do it), rub you against its big brain wrinkles? I guess maybe it could retract its gun and uncoil a series of robot tentacles, and the player could like, smother it into submission with their huge fucking titties? Seems lame though. 99 times out of 100, any level ever for Doom was designed with pistol start in mind, because that's just so much easier to balance for, so if you want the TRVE CHALLENGE, then playing each level pistol start would be the way to go.
Of course, Doom is also meant to be played continuous, so do as you feel like, it'll be easier (I actually added a few things for the player to discover in my maps which would largely only be useful for continuous play), but I think you'll get a good challenge still.

>>7138453
Sort of. There's the plain version, which is just stock Vanilla Doom stuff, there's the DeHacked version, which runs on PrBoom+ and stuff, which has the new guns (and almost all of their new animation), while being demo friendly.
Then there's the Decorate addon, which has the replacement weapons, with some extra animations and effects, and a few changes to sound and the weapon handling (DN3D style pistol reloading, faster weapon switching, etc). There's also a Zandybam compat version of the Decorate set.

>> No.7138552

>>7138445
Just the sound design, lol.
I don't think Zandybam has any option for forcing pistol starts, so I guess you'll just have to settle for IDCLEV. There's a GzDoom mod which forces pistol start for you, though I don't know if Zandybam will run it with its long outdated codebase.

I haven't gotten as much done as anticipated since most of my time has been spent studying for finals / group projects etc. I really need to stop giving out deadlines, since shit invariably gets in the way or other mappers need more time.

It will be released when its done.
