Why do people become fans of inferior consoles? Is it low-self esteem? Masochism? Or just plain bad taste?

This. PC Engine was actually #1 in Japan sales for that gen, NEC just fucked up everything when marketing it for America. I've got a TG16+CD and about 30 games and there's several I played where I thought "holy shit if this was released on the NES it would've been a household name today"

Different strokes for different folks. I feel like what system you like can come down to whatever the concentration of genres on that system is, soundchip, looks, etc. Some people just love underdogs too. I for one automatically attached myself to the Sega Saturn during my early teens for some reason, don't really know why aside from I love the way 3D looks on it. Either way retro gaming is all about bringing us joy and a sense of peace from the past
