MMC1 lets you bank the PRG ROM in 16k chunks and the CHR ROM in 4k chunks. MMC3 lets you bank the PRG in 8k chunks and the CHR in 1k chunks. The latter also has an IRQ counter for split screen scrolling. Both can support a battery save and both allow up to 512k of PRG and 128k of CHR ROM. In theory MMC3 carts could have CHR RAM but I'm not aware of any games with that setup. Also MMC3 with battery save was rare due to the cost.

It's a 64k MMC1 game with CHR RAM--nothing released in the NES's commercial lifespan used that setup even though it was always possible. Typically you use CHR RAM for animated bg graphics or other uses of rewriting graphics data on the fly.

If the latter, it's probably best to develop for PC. Wanting to make fake-retro games has diminishing returns at a certain era and a lot of the "glory" days of the low-poly 32-bit era really weren't that endearing to replicate unless you get off on scanlines, jittery edges and pixel art textures.

Wasn't sure if this was really related to the thread but I bought an FX Pak Pro so I could play MSU-1 hacks and translations on an actual SNES. The thing is that when I made the order on everdrive.me it didn't let me put in my payment information, it just completed the order process so now it shows a status of new (not paid). It's my first time buying one of these flash carts so I'm not sure if this is normal and they'll bill me later or if I fucked up somehow.
