Alright then forgive me for sperging out on you, the usage of "definitive" is pretty ambiguous. At least in the west I'd say Gradius, Raiden, and Ikaruga are the biggest normalfag shmups.

I have seen far too many writeups that make no indication that one implementation is better than another, and I have even seen writeups that diss one implementation with zero explanation for it. What I say here is a great example. SnS is historically defined as a "bad Touhou clone" with "boring" patterns and whining about every game's stage 3 that always has environmental problems to "put up with". People still say these things today, if you look hard enough.

Saying something is "actually interesting" but also saying you don't play the games very seriously just adds to this. You can't really judge a game's design if you openly admit that you don't actually pay attention to it. It's very disrespectful to the game designers who put in serious hours trying to get these games to work at least somewhat well. This is an age-old problem with the community, even in this age where there is no real "community" and it's just a bunch of fragments everywhere that don't even know they all exist. I can already see someone trying to tell me I'm being "elitist" by stating this, even though it's very basic logic about how game design fundamentally works.

Maybe if far too many people wouldn't blindly go off wot ppl fink about a game to the damned letter, as we see with so many gaming sites and as we saw with RXN, this wouldn't be an issue. Objectivity exists in this hobby, and in game design. People are even willing to admit to it about things they personally like. Just like with RXN, we need and deserve better voices. We need people who actually care about game design, and who also actually care about the fact that someone was willing to put in the effort to make a real game for this dying genre (something all too many "superplayers" scorn). This throwaway posting is no better than the equally throwaway reviews that all those awful websites churn out every time a company dares to localize one of these games. That's not "elitism", it's basic decency.

The graphics are fine, but the bullets fill the screen (which make it look awful) to the point where you cant do anything. The music wasn't bad, although none of it was memorable. I know its a bullet hell, but your ship moves way to fast, you cant even tap dodge. It feels like Yotsubane was trying too hard to made a hard shmup and went crazy with it.
A lot of patterns feel like there was no thought put into them. The bosses have way too much health and the later levels feel way too long. I couldn't put myself through to the end of arcade mode, I just wanted it to be over with.

I just found out there was another trailer for R-Type Final 2 a month ago and I compiled all the ships that were shown/mentioned in said trailer in a single pic.
Names in gold means the model was shown in the video, white means they appeared in name only.

There was some concern that only a fraction from all the ships from R-Type Final would make it into the game (as the goal to get them all was left unfulfilled in the kickstarter), but the devs seem willing to put in the effort to get several families of ships in their completion, which are redundant gameplay-wise as they're just direct upgrades rather than unique ships (with some nice lore nonetheless):

It seems the number of ships Final2 will have may be bigger than what I expected at first.

They have pretty cool attacks and the move set changes based on how much you destroy, but literally all of them can be cheesed and destroyed in less than 10 seconds with Grenade.

Tyrian/Tyrian 2000. You can get it free on GOG.
On its story mode, your score = currency. In between levels you can use that money upgrade your weapons/ship/shields/etc.
I 100% recommend it, because I was the same as you once, big into jrpg's and really fucking bad at shmups. I'm still kinda bad but i've been making progress, don't exactly have time to play shmups all the time.
Darius Twin on the SNES is a good starter too, at least it was for me, only probably with it is that it can be very difficult to see bullets on certain stages.
