I want to get into shmups but I don't know anything about them. Can I get a quick rundown on the different genres, nuances, etc? It seems like there is a lot to know. Thanks my dudes.

Not so fast before we get into shmups remember he posts 150 times a day on discord but claims he can't find time to shmup consistently! Does that make sense?

>Fixed shooter
Space Invaders style, single screen, wave based, often but not always without vertical movement
>Multidirectional shooter
There's several types, either ones like Asteroids or Robotron, started off as single screen but evolved to have big scrolling levels with objectives
>Classic vertical shooter
Vertically scrolling, focused on either aggressive enemies or fast bullets, big hitboxes, simple scoring, terrain exists but rarely as a hazard. See Xevious, Flying Shark.
>Caravan shooter
Subset of classic vertical shmups focused on scoring. Short fast paced score attack games (2-5 minute modes are common) where you have to kill enemy waves as fast as possible and hunt for a variety of secrets. See Star Soldier series and Macross 2.
>Terrain shooter
Usually horizontal, focused on environmental hazards. See Gradius and R-Type
>Memorizer
A shmup that forces strict memorization just for basic survival and heavily rewards knowledge. See R-Type and Psikyo games
>Checkpoint shmup
A shmup where you lose your power ups and respawn at a checkpoint, infamous for how difficult recovery is. R-Type, Gradius, Tatsujin Ou
>Yagawa-style
Proto-bullet hell, heavily emphasis on dynamic difficulty (called rank), requires unorthodox playstyles like avoiding power ups and intentional suicide to keep the difficulty under control
>Bullet hell
A lot of bullets, small hitboxes, complex scoring. See CAVE.
>VS shmup
Pretty self explanatory, though there's 2 types one is the indirect Twinkle Star Sprites style, the other is direct versus like you see in Senko No Ronde.

There are a lot of unique one off games like Gun.Smoke, and related styles like run n guns, on rails shooters and cabal shooters.

For starters play House of the Dead and Virtua Cop.

OP, before the thread devolves into discord drama and reheated memes, getting into shmups is often a question of a) what console do I have, and b) how comfortable/knowledgeable am I with emulation?

There are a lot of great shmups on steam (including a decent conversion of R-Type, per your OP). As well as many new and retro releases on consoles.

I think the biggest takeaway is to try a lot to find what style of game you like, and then practice a game you particularly like. Modern shooters tend to be bullet hell, where a small hitbox navigates huge bullet walls, while older shooters tend to use terrain and multiple weapons to force strategic positioning to counter threats. I like them both, but a lot of players tend to gravitate towards one or the other. Keep an open mind.

Secondly, the other takeaway is that the games are purposefully designed to be difficult, even the 'easy' ones. You won't beat them your first, second, or my tenth try. They're meant to be played and practiced so you get a little further with each try. Don't get down on not winning immediately, just enjoy the game play, and try to think about how to overcome obstacles that stop you, whether through killing an enemy that killed you more quickly, or putting your ship in a better position to dodge an attack or wave. If you focus on smaller goals you'll get better over time without burning out.

It could be too late. Dad shooters build bad habits. Best you can do is get a few easy Cave clears (Espgaluda, DDP 1cc) then start making excuses about Cave scoring and how you prefer ''fast bullets'' or someshit.

but bullet hells are boring its just muh small hit box.

take Raiden, for example, the only shump where you can fire into player 2 and get a special green fire skinflint, which adds a whole dimension to the game.

or change air blade the only shump where you can be the boss
