Definitely the best logo I've seen in my life... Both Sony and Nintendo had legendary marketing around this time. Everything after this period is actually lame as hell in comparison.

That’s a console that pretty much only has mass-market pop games, the video game equivalent of good MCU movies. Popcorn blockbuster fare, but nothing artistically challenging. There’s nothing really on the N64 that’s on the same level as LSD Dream Emulator, Cosmology of Kyoto, Kowloon’s Gate, and other 90s art games. If someone maintains that this is the best that gaming as a medium has to offer, I mentally compartmentalize them as a developmentally delayed manchild who probably doesn’t read or engage with challenging works of art. There’s nothing wrong with saying these games are “fun” but there’s something wrong with maintaining they’re truly great, because even as children’s entertainment they fail to live up to the best of other mediums (e.g cinema’s Miyazaki far surpasses Miyamoto in creating challenging but fun art for children).

I’d love to hear you say what games have any artistic merit but usually when I ask that people fall back on “they’re just entertainment! Just for fun!”, as if there’s something about gaming that means it can only ever be constrained to children’s toys unlike film and literature. No, it’s not the medium that’s flawed, it’s just you’re a big baby with the tastes of a ten year old.

This system is nothing more than a no brainier multiplayer fun. Not much thinking required honestly. No need to fry your brain over the 64 and I own one myself. This thread is more for the Sega Saturn which requires a high iq to appreciate due to how much hate it receives on here.

You easily could've gone with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy as it not only held a ton of artistic merit for pulling off such beatiful graphics for the kind of system Naughty Dog was working with (and how it still holds up even today), but also how they're mechanically sound and fun to play like any other platformer on top of that (with the obvious exception of the vehicles in Crash 3); But i guess that wouldn't have gave you brownie points for being a pretentious faggot with a stick up his ass.

Crash Bandicoot demonstrates great craft and technical prowess but it’s not artistically interesting. That’s like saying Marvel movies are great art because of the complexity of their special effects. It’s not pretentious to appreciate the work of other artists outside of Marvel in cinema, it’s just called being an adult. You’re going to stay developmentally delayed if you shut down anything built for people over the age of ten.

If your argument is that most video game players don’t care then I agree. You think they don’t care because anything that reaches for something greater than a dopamine rush is shit...I think they don’t care because most game players are retarded or developmentally delayed. In all honesty and to take the thread back to the topic, the Saturn has more interesting games to me than the N64. I’d rather play Baroque or Lunacy/Torico, than Banjo Kazooie or Super Mario 64. My tastes changed as I got older, I’m not bullshitting you. I think OoT/MM have interesting spaces to explore, they’re good experiences for sure, but I think for the most part people should try games they have maybe overlooked on other consoles. Thankfully Baroque is getting a Switch re-release soon, but yeah there really are a lot of fantastic experiences worth seeking out beyond the usual couple dozen games people only want to talk about on this board, it’s a disproportionate amount of discourse relative to how interesting these games actually are.

Look, it’s the honest truth that I had a more interesting and memorable experience playing LSD than I did playing your run of the mill platformer or JRPG or whatever. I love exploring interesting spaces in video games, like I love 3D Zelda for navigating its environments more than I like them for the plot or combat or whatever, and LSD evoked an uncanny, nightmarish feeling. It’s not fundamentally different than a trip to the bottom of the well or Jabu Jabu’s belly, there is something to love there for people who like this medium and shouldn’t be dismissed outright.

>it’s the honest truth that I had a more interesting and memorable experience playing LSD than I did playing your run of the mill platformer or JRPG or whatever
Yeah the part where you walk forward and totally weird things happen man, really deep stuff. Way better than actually playing a video game with mechanics and shit.

>> No.7124631

>>7124618
“Mechanics” in most games are overrated. Like if you look at something like OoT, was the combat challenging? No not really, any random NES or SNES game was harder. Were the puzzles hard? Maybe if you were 8. So what’s the appeal? To me, it was the atmosphere, moving through the spaces. The unsettling distorted spaces of the Forest Temple, the weird chanting of the Fire Temple, that’s why I liked the game. It’s what people on this board commonly call “soul”. As I got older I got less interested in mechanics because really, I’ve played so many fucking games that it’s not going to stump me intellectually, it’s probably not going to challenge me mechanically, so it’s worth seeking other things at this point. Like if you play a Zelda game for the puzzles you’re gonna have a lousy time, but they have something to offer in terms of exploration, and exploration is what the so-called “non-game” walking sims focus on.
