I never thought I's say this, but there's something very comfy about 2600 games. The gameplay feels so tight and the simplistic visuals/sounds can be very charming. What are some of your go-tos? Also interested in the 5200 and 7800.

The darkness that constitutes the majority of screen space allows for a lot of imagination and is generally comfy, yes.

Centipede, Crystal Castles, Ballblazer (7800), Kaboom!, Video Olympics. Don't bother with the 5200, just play the Atari 8-bit computer stuff instead — the 5200 is just an A8 with no RAM and shit controllers.

That's the perfect quote to sums up

Even though the games are so simple and the graphics so primitive, it has a charm that will never be matched. The objects and characters just barely represent what they're supposed to be, but that's the whole beauty of it; that you have to use your imagination. The sound effects? Just awesome. And the lack of music just enhances the mood. It's that special kind of atmosphere when it's in the middle of the night, and you're sittin' in the glow of your TV with the sound of crickets

I think a good first step would be for you to actually understand what sprite flickering is and what causes it. Not flaming, just saying.

You also need to understand that sprite flickering, particularly on a 2600, is practically a necessary evil. Owing to its design roots as a "pong machine" the 2600 gives you two player sprites, two missile sprites, and a ball sprite -- each a different pixel size. That's it.

If you want to do anything even remotely interesting on this machine you're going to have some sprite flicker.

>> No.7124805

>>7124717
sorry, what I really meant was how to reduce flickering as much as possible. e.g. how does ms. pacman have so much less flickering than the original pacman port?
>If you want to do anything even remotely interesting on this machine you're going to have some sprite flicker.
also i disagree. there are games like turmoil and riverraid that don't have any apparent flickering and are really fun

>> No.7124973

>>7124805
>e.g. how does ms. pacman have so much less flickering than the original pacman port?
Ok, so Pacman is only drawing one ghost, because it only has one ghost sprite. How do we have four ghosts? Each of our ghosts gets drawn in one frame out of every four. As you can imagine, this causes some pretty awful flickering. In Ms. Pacman we're actually tracking multiple sprites so each can be drawn every frame *unless* they're on the same scanline at the same time, at which point you get flicker as each is drawn on a single frame sequentially.

>also i disagree. there are games like turmoil and riverraid that don't have any apparent flickering and are really fun
Sure, but they're also not doing anything particularly interesting codewise in order to do sprite tricks. Not to discredit Carol Shaw at all, but she wasn't doing anything out of bounds with the 2600's hardware, at least not by the time she wrote River Raid. It just happened to be a really good game.

Doug Neubauer's masterpiece. He never did quite get Star Raiders out of his system, and this game was strongly suspected to be meant as a direct sequel to it. Instead, they asked him to rework it as a movie tie-in game for The Last Starfighter, but that ended up falling through and we got Solaris. (Funnily enough, another team was working on a Last Starfighter game for the Atari 8-bit computers, which ALSO fell through, and that game got rebranded as Star Raiders II -- which Doug had nothing to do with whatsoever.)

Then we come to find out just a couple of years ago that an actual Star Raiders sequel was in the works (again, by someone other than Doug) and THAT project got scrapped when Atari lost their fucking minds and started collapsing in on themselves around late 83 - early 84.
