What does this mean for retro gaming? How will it affect emulators like DOSBox?

I thought DOSBOX already emulated this fine? I mean, most games sound bad, but that's because not a single American composer knew how to program FM synth and the games sounded bad back in the day, too.

I believe it's more about accurately reproducing the effects of the original hardware rather than the capabilities of the music authors. Kind of like using a 2000 build of ZSNES vs using say, a recent build of bsnes to play games. You can get by with both, but one is going to be more like the original, deficiencies and all.

Soundblaster 16 emulation is the default but you can change it to Soundblaster 1 emulation if you want 8-bit mono sound.
So maybe somebody working on a dosbox fork will make the option nobody uses a bit more accurate.

how long until an aureal vortex is reverse engineered?

I want a GPL-compatible reverse engineering of the Gravis Ultrasound. It's a bitch to install it on DOSBox.

Dosbox FM synth emulation is a huge fucking joke. Dune 1 is probably still broken in it even today.

PCEM is much better; although the adlib gold surround emulation is pretty bad, but no other emulator does that at all (and maybe like 4 games do anything with it).

I hope it means they start on the 2.0 which is the sound I remember for old DOS games that I loved. I did get the new MPU-401k and Orpheus sound cards for ISA. It is nice to have new hardware to help preserve my old memories. While Roland MT-32 is real nice alongside the clean sound from the Orpheus OPL3, I am just more used to the OPL2 that was on the Sound Blaster 2.0 cards.

A nice cheap knock-off card for retro PC builds.

I haven't played a DOS game on a real Soundblaster since the 90s, so I'm sure my perspective is warped.

I plug in a real Roland midi device to my PC for DOSBOX. Because Windows 10 doesn't support midi anymore you need to download a third party midi device selector, but that's it. The midi passes right through Windows into DOSBOX. Sounds amazing.

Reread it anon
The firmware was extracted 2 years ago, was just this month that the firmware was reverse engineered and now we've got the (kinda) original sourcecode with comments of said firmware.
