This port is amazing and lots of fun but I refuse to believe anybody ever beat it single-player without the 9-extra-lives code

Got it as a kid around 90/91, somewhere in there, got my ass whooped. It took until about 2011 to actually beat it. The key is to use the A+B attack to kill everything in basically one hit. It's extremely tedious this way but it's the safest.

TMNT 2&3 are good games. The extra levels in tmnt2 make it worth playing because it's not just the arcade game with worse graphics. Hit impact is better in the NES version.

NES version is better than the arcade version. Only graphicswhores think otherwise. Arcade version has that weird hit detection where there is no satisfying sound effect when you hit an enemy, it just makes a swoosh sound and feels unsatisfying. Plus NES has two unique levels, and has Vincent van Growl.

My family owned this game and I feel like I probably did it a number of times. But maybe I didn't. It was a long time ago.

I know I never considered this to be a difficult game. And I know I never quite finished the previous NES game until I revisited it as an adult. But I got to Shredder in that game once as a kid. So I guess I was a good enough player.

Like other anon says, you can easily brush aside most minor enemies with the special swipe attack. And you have that extremely easy to use divekick move that lets you fly into an enemy from safety, hurt it more than you would with a normal attack, and then fly back out to safety again. I'd be surprised if I couldn't finish it without cheating or even continuing in just a few hours of trying. But who knows. I don't care enough to actually attempt it.

Most of the enemies in the game are like a dozen flavors of Foot Ninjas, which take two hits to kill with anything but the stronger (yet slower) special attack. It's certainly better to rely on the latter watching your placement and timing to not provide openings, but they come in in crowds so you often need to rely on the better mobility of the weaker flying kick - BUT they have a counter-move for that one that they can pull off pretty often if you don't watch it. The basic attack should only be used to quickly finish off enemies that you've hit with a kick already.

For most bosses using the special attack will almost always get them a free hit on you because they recover very quickly. The flying kicks are better but they can -and WILL- counter those often as well.

It's not a super hard game but it requires a lot of concentration to play; half measures will get your ass kicked extremely fast. Also it's pretty long and health pickups are extremely scarce.

>>7124795

Yeah you don't use the same attack ALL the time. You have to play through repeatedly and memorize a bit of information about how this enemy counters this attack while that enemy counters that attack. So yeah I think I'd need to spend at least a few hours messing around with it. But I can't remember any of that stuff being a big problem in the long run. You just learn a good pattern for each enemy and then you're in pretty good shape. Don't you push me into playing through this game as an adult anon. Don't you do it. I swear it's just not that hard. I really think it's not. Maybe it is though.

Every time I try to replay I get filtered by the weird jump slash timing. You have to push B a few frames after A. It would probably be easier with an arcade type stick.

Yeah you eventually pick up on that. The special attack can actually be triggered a few frames into a jump (and it won't work if the game registers your B press before your A press). So yo sort of have to roll your thumb over from A to B instead of mashing them both at the same time in a single press.

Well I played it for the first time in A VERY LONG WHILE and 1cc'd on my first shot with some room for error. Got to classify it "not impossible".

I died on:
>Stone Warrior Guy (1st one)
>Vincent van Growl (not sure how you're supposed to fight them)
>Krang
>Maybe Shredder? don't remember

I tried with an NES Advantage stick for about one level but the buttons are so big and mushy it makes the jumpslash even harder. I settled on putting my index finger on B and middle finger on A with a normal NES pad. It's actually a somewhat clever way to work around technical limitations, to have your standard attack be a "special move" that you can screw up. There wouldn't be much to the game otherwise - very small moveset, no more than three enemies at a time.

It's a shitty port. Even as a kid, we knew it was an inferior port, but it was "the best you could get" in homes at the time (unless you were Richie Rich and your parents just bought you arcade cabinets or some crazy shit). It's the same reason shit like those LCD handheld games were popular (although some of them are legit fun in a really basic way).
But I can't imagine playing TMNT2 or even 3 now (beyond just for pure nostalgia) when you have so many better options available. Hell, by 92 you had Turtles in Time which is a better game in every way than both 2 and 3 combined.

Dude don't use your fingertips to push buttons on game controllers. Why are you doing that? Anon already said it: You ROLL your thumb. Put the joint (more or less) on the A button and let the end lay across B. If you're not playing that way normally then... what are you doing?? If you ARE playing that way normally, then how in the world are you having trouble with the special attack?

It's not hard and you almost never mess it up if you're using your thumb in a sensible way. The move is extremely easy to do and it renders the basic attack obsolete and unnecessary.
