Like I said, the enemies did have some unique aspects. The Armageddon Beast was sort of Mancubus-like, higher-HP and shoots projectiles radially while remaining relatively stationary due to slow speed. Would have offered something different from the usual ranged enemies that shoot at you instead of around you.

The Hunter Hound was supposed to be a super fast melee enemy whose balance was that it couldn't climb stairs. Apparently it was cut because they couldn't find places that would make him fun, though I think it would have been great in certain pits or otherwise flat areas, e.g. hide a couple under the railings in the open sections of G4 Sunbathing, or in the lower-right room in Neither High Nor Low. Or they could have just removed the stair limitation and let it zerg-rush the player; was probably less fun back in those days of slower gameplay/reaction times overall.

I wouldn't call the Cyborgs pure fodder btw, at least not in maps with limited movement space. Locking-on grenades and they're too heavy to blast around with explosives, which makes them more difficult longer-range enemies than most.

A decent and relatively unknown FPS from Apogee. (Unknown compared to Wolf3D, DOOM, Duke, etc.) It's sort of in-between Wolf3D and Duke3D. It has some cool new features, such as choosing different characters at the beginning of the game, each of whom has unique abilities. But at times they don't seem to work together all that well. For example, there's too much platform jumping. Some people love this game, presumably due to its aesthetic, but I personally wasn't that excited about it. It doesn't feel as smooth as Doom. Some great ideas here though, and definitely unique.

If all of that is true then it's a bit sad they got cut. The transition to M1 to M2 added the shotguns (great), cyborgs (good) the flickta (useless). The drones don't count because they're just reskinned wasps. I wonder if Bungie just got lazy when it came to making new stuff. I would be interested in someone doing a rebalancing mod for enemies for M2/M:I
>I wouldn't call the Cyborgs pure fodder btw

I unironically think that the enemy drones in Marathon 1 (the grey machinegun ones with grenade launchers equipped) are the single hardest enemy of the entire series. They're like souped-up troopers with extra armor that can fly and operate on patrols. I beat the game Total Carnage for the first time a few months ago and I died more on Beware of Low-Flying Defense Drones than any other level. They should have brought them back for a couple of Infinity flashback levels or something.

In Bungie's defense, Marathon 2 came only 9 months after the original's release, and that came with four completely new texture sets, totally redesigned enemies, an expanded level set, and a lot more plot.
>I mentioned them but I called them tanks. I don't know why but I've always called them that even though they're called cyborgs in the game files.
I thought you were referring to the juggies, but now that you mention it, I called them tanks when I was a kid as well because of the treads, kek. Also used to call the S'pht 'witches'.

There is some swimming parts too. But I don't know what the fuck to do now I feel like I am going in circles. Weland actually got a very big update recently. The big issue is that Aleph One is very much lacking when compared to what you can do in say, gzdoom. I can easily create a cool level in Marathon but I can't do colored lighting, 3D architecture, slanted floors, etc.

It all comes down to if it's a worthy time investment, and it really isn't. If you're going to map, why not start with Doom? Because if you start with Doom, you really learn a lot about modding and have the beginnings of making your own GZDoom supermod, or even your own vidya game. Same with Trenchbroom and Quake.

But the real lynchpin here, is that instead of YOU doing something about it, you made a post stating that SOMEONE ELSE should. That's the real crux of the whole thing.

Because I like Marathon more than Doom, although you're still ultimately right. There's no real reason to completely overhaul Aleph One with new features when the demand just isn't there and it's essentially all being developed by one guy as a hobby. I am *hoping* that future iterations of Aleph One will add some crazy new options but I know it won't.

Something that even ROTT's detractors can agree on is that the music is absolutely sick, it's done by Lee Jackson and Bobby Prince, with Lee doing most of it, and he really knocks it out of the park.
Andrew Hulshult does an ok job remaking it for the remake, though he turns it all into metal shredding, which I think is off for a lot of the tracks.

I'm pretty fucking baffled at that design decision, because it's so incredibly BAD. Like, Doom has a PRNG table, but it's designed to not give you completely shitass damage rolls, even if it also nerfs potentially super high damage rolls with rounding.
Blood 2's damage scaling is all over the place, and it regularly results in even strong weapons to underperform dramatically, very regularly, and what it really does is make every weapon in the game feel extremely unreliable and unsatisfying to use, which is bad for what's supposed to be an action game.

I know GT Interactive booted it out the door as a beta, but this seems like the kind of thing where you implement it to see what it's like, and then when you immediately test it, and then immediately undo it because of how awful it turned out. Blood 2 wasn't finished, but every time I look at basically any aspect of it, it makes me think about how almost all of its design decisions are really awful.

Protip: for mostly cubical objects like those, it'd be better to plain convert them to regular 3D models (which would look exactly the same), because the way GzDoom does voxels is to plain render each 'voxel' as a 1x1x1 3D model cube, which is super inefficient in terms of performance.

Movement is slow and has more friction to it, TTK with the chaingun is way too slow, all despite all HP and damage values being transcribed to decorate on zdoom wiki and Doom engine's quirks being exhaustively documented on the web, making the behavior extremely easy to port 1:1.

Because you are a fucking retard kike who's hiding that The jews at hollywood did that with the first two Medal of Honor games who were narrative corridor shooters, and spielberg who was the councilor head honcho at dreamworks games, pushed that since he had friends at the industry, and that shit was easier to make than a well rounded fps map with open areas and so on in a console, which led to the retarded infusion of it in 2003, since it was easier to contact a hollywood writer or actor to make and promote your games for free, also he hated CoD1,2 and Allied Assault/Pacific/Airborne for being more akin to Good old PC FPS games from 97/2004 period, since they used a good engine and took notes from RTCW about how to make a good WW2 game that isn't a corridor shooter, and is action packed with some exploration and even interactions.

Also, the "golden age of fps games" were garbage, nothing but a bunch of doom and wolfenstein clones with zero inovations, even quake was one, who had Multiplayer, the 1st Machinimas and good maps carrying it because it was the 1st 3d fps game, Powerslave which was a kino game on the saturn with tons of innovations, suffered because of the original early build engine game, and the garbage PS1 port thanks to sony's autism, same autism that pushed FPS as we see nowadays because of MoH and MoHU, since sony was hollywood, also Alien trilogy who is a underrated game.

And AGAIN, HL didn't killed FPS games, its still a Quake Engine based game who got independence, and its still fastpaced, dangerous, with open maps with secrets, and a good story, which brought new blood and innovations to a stale genre as Quake 2, 3, Unreal and even, Kingpin, Delta Force + Soldier of fortune did to renovate it from its Doom Clone status on PC.

Not the modern AAA fuckfest that killed the genre for years with the same repeated clones repeating the same Console MoH/MoHU formula. And even fucking halo 1 and 2 are in a midterm, though 3 and later embraced it fully for the sake of "more sells".

Also, The Corridor narrative shooter formula is easier to produce, mostly because Devs are too lazy to come up with bigger open maps to circumvent the "sony" console limitations, even deathmatch maps are smaller and bland due to pure laziness, but they sell because modern players hated old school design for being "complicated, full of backtracking, exploration" and so on, and this same cursed formula later on infected other genres, to the point of turning them into interactive movies for people who hates videogames, they became "youtube games", which you can play all of it by wacthing on youtube for 3 or so hours.

It took a few levels for it to really hit its stride, but I'm pretty impressed with Build Powerslave. In terms of mechanics and design, it's not far behind Duke and Shadow Warrior at all. They designed this game for continuous play and it shows, with inventory mechanics that discourage hoarding and also prevent you from just stacking all the buffs any time there's a rough fight, as well as relatively small ammo amounts and capacities so you're never running around with full ammo for everything. The weapons are serviceable in both function and feeling. They definitely put extra effort into the M60 knowing that it'd be your workhorse, but none of the others are particularly bad. The enemy roster's solid too. There's little to no redundancy and the enemies all have distinguishable silhouettes, but some of them are a bit disproportionately strong for how they're used. The mummies can be especially nasty in groups, they're like the classic Archvile+Revenant encounter rolled into one enemy.

Worst I can say about the game is that it's lacking in character. Our guy doesn't have much to say and the few lines he has aren't particularly good. The setting also doesn't really allow for the same amount of humor in the levels. The best you get are rude traps and occasional secret windows into rooms with sexy ladies. It's only really a problem though because of the expectation set by the main trio.

Its an interesting mechanic since they can only revive eachother. However, ive found that you can actually kill them with the machete quite easily by melee-baiting them. Also the revived ones only have like half health.
>Worst I can say about the game is that it's lacking in character. Our guy doesn't have much to say and the few lines he has aren't particularly good.
The character is very generic but I do like the voice acting. He sounds so pissed, it's realistic to the sounds guys actually make when they get hurt.

To the anon who says Jace Hall should buy the Blood IP:
>On August 2, 2012 Jason Hall posted on The Postmortem forums about his interest in the idea of reviving Blood in some form. He stated that he was in a position to do this and the he had resolved any potential legal issues. He also stated that he wished for all Bloodites to offer him suggestions and ideas through this forum thread. He did however confirm that it was unlikely that he would be able to release the Blood source code in any sort of useful form. It was later revealed in February 2013 that Hall was unable to generate enough interest from Atari in order to have the project go forward. Hall had been considering such an idea since 2004 (see also), and mentioned something similar again on June 6, 2008 in a hypothetical context.

>It should also be mentioned that Devolver Digital also showed some interest in the Blood IP at around the same time, but concluded that it was too expensive for them to attempt to acquire it; others have since mused upon the idea as well.

>Hall brought up the idea again with an article published on June 5, 2016 intended to gauge whether or not there was still sufficient interest to support such a revival.

>On December 7, 2018 it was announced that a similar effort had been green-lit by Atari developed by Night Dive Studios. This came to be as Blood: Fresh Supply on May 9, 2019.

Heres his post from Postmortem forums:
>"Hello, my name is Jason (Jace) Hall and some of you may know of me. I have been contemplating the idea bringing Blood back and was wondering how people might feel about it or if they were interested in helping me to do it. To be clear, I am thinking of bringing the ORIGINAL Blood game back as it was, with functionality alterations/enhancements that are similar but superior to ZDAEMON's. I would also make it work on all platforms, and not just PC. There are other things as well... I have a very specific vision in mind for what I'd like to do, but before I go off and do it - I wanted to speak directly with the Blood community and see what the thoughts are. My goal of course is for this all to be free, and all about gameplay and fun. You can rest assured that I have the resources to bring BLOOD back properly but like I said, I'm hoping to have the community participate in all this if it wants to so we can all do it together. This site is great and it would be great to see the Blood community grow! What do you all think?"--Jason Hall

>Any good?
I was going to write up a larger post shilling it when I was done with it, but I will do a smaller post now.

Ter_Shibboleth: Drake Redux is one of the most fun mods I've ever played in video games, not just Quake. It utilizes the much lesser known Quake mod Drake. T_S was originally released in 2017 in five maps, but it later got a sequel of three Drake focused maps, and then the author went and remade the first 5 to match, hence Redux. Drake has some great projects out there like Arcanum, Something_Wicked, Unforgiven, and some smaller ones, but it never had the Arcane Dimensions treatment of a mega mappack from various members of the community, hence its obscurity. Something_Wicked comes close, and I'll shill for that some other time, but T_S is all the more impressive because it's by one guy, but this one mother fucker really pulled off some crazy shit. The maps are enormous, so much so that you need to increase the -heapsize of your sourceport to get them running smoothly, but they're not enormous to the point of annoyance because just about every bit of space you see is used in some way. The abundance of new enemies, new powerups, new weapons (including changing the functions of default ones) just elevates this so high for me. Is it any good? Hell fucking yeah. I would not try to run it on a toaster, unfortunately.
https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/ter_shibboleth_drake_redux.html

Side note, the maps are designed in such a way that you can and definitely should shotgun start them, but be wary of shotgun starting nightmare. That shit's crazy and fun.

That game needs some serious mod love. I'm still amazed nobody's made a classic "full" build for it yet, especially with how awkward most of the weapon ammo counts are. Tried out the bonus maps, until I saw they were basically just random sectors from the campaign thrown together and mixed around. It feels like such a weird thing how adamant the Zdoom forums are about not exporting any assets, yet nobody is willing (or able?) to mod for the game itself. I know build isn't exactly as beginner friendly to work with, but its sad how ignored the game feels.

There is the base Build, and then both mapster32 and mapedit are their own improved editions of that, each with their respective improvements and differences. For instance copy pasting sectors is not done the same way in mapedit and mapster32.

I really enjoy the old early 20th century tech level with the heavy emphasis on dark and bleak gothic horror themes. There's also a lot you can infer by just looking at environments and events in the levels.

It's like the Great Depression just kept going while Tchernobog and other dark forces like that enveloped the world (with the city level that gets bombed, is that just the Cabal trying to get at Caleb, or are there other factions in the world engaged in war with them?), so everything just continued getting shittier and more horrible, more and more people turning to the Cabal (and maybe other cults) out of fear and desperation, and as a result ritualistic murder, destructive warfare, and horrible monsters taking people away in the night just becomes normal daily life in America.
It's almost like a quasi-apocalyptic world, where humanity lives on and it was never consumed by atomic war, but it's in the grips of great evils which make life miserable. Caleb isn't really a hero in this, he just wants his vengeance, and when he's done, he's likely just going to engage in the typical cruel and sadistic rampages he did before Tchernobog betrayed him. Would the destruction of Tchernobog change the course of this horrible world? For sure, maybe it even creates some hope, but Caleb doesn't care.

Blood 2 is frustrating because it replaces this really interesting setting with a FAR less novel and cool one that's in both aesthetic and theme just a very mundane sci-fi future one. Yeah, you've got the Cabal ruling the world, but there's absolutely nothing interesting about it. Also the game itself is completely dildos.

I think NC-HUD looks pretty clean and straightforward, and its configurable to a large degree. The only additional information shown there (over the original HUD) is the level percentages, and for the very few GzDoom maps which make use of it, an air bar when submerged under water (so almost never ever, and can also be turned off).

I really love Blood's bleak color palette, makes me think a lot about Quake's muted color palette and heavy use of earth tones, for its own murky and gritty gothic horror aesthetics, though it's a very distinct style from Quake's, there's no confusing the two.

if those grunts were Q2 shotgunners, you would be dead.
Q1 is merciful when it comes to its enemy roster in many mods, and it feels smooth to play, but Q2 really fucks you around in a certain difficulty because the custom map layouts takes advantage of that, and makes enemies immune to stuns outside parasites at point blank SSG.
and im talking about Nightmare orchard, which truly makes Medics real assholes who focuses on tanks and gladiators, and 1964

Nah it's the mapper was merciful. Drake comes with variants of grunts with nailguns that move a la Nehahra, Enforcers with chainguns like Doom II chaingunners, Enforcers with plasma shotguns that can twoshot you, a few more. That is to say, that hallway could have easily been filled with bunches of fuck you instead of grunts.

But I do agree with the spirit of your post. Mods for Quake like Quoth, Arcane Dimensions, and Drake are my favorite ways to play Quake because they fill out the roster the same way Doom II did for Doom 1 and then some. Quake II avoided this with a sizeable cast of enemies right out the gate, but Quake 1 didn't have such luck.

To tangent a little, none of this is to say Quake doesn't do fine with newly made vanilla maps with the base enemy roster, especially with progs_dump or Copper being as popular as they are, but it's incredibly difficult to not miss the additions. Edie, droles, minotaurs, imps, gaunts; and none of them feel out of place! The community did a good job with them.

The mission packs did a good job for Q2, and there are custom enemies made out over years, spread through many maps since the game didn't had its own Quoth outside lazarus which is a effects goodie
Fortunately you can make enemies out of player skins as milous did with his maps, but a Q2oth fused with lazarus would be great, mainly because of the PS1 unique monsters and other stuff now deemed "canon" like Q1 monsters which milous uses it for his maps since he has Q1 rottweilers with pain skins and more speed

Nightmare Orchard which i went up to play recently is pretty much a small and simple Q1 map with Q2 enemies in it, and more aggressive with traps and well placed enemies.
It felt like a DoE map

As for the last character for GMOTA, Samson's update should hopefully not take as fucking long, seeing as it's just gonna be him and a few well needed adjustments to Kustam.

It is, it's a really good episode, and I insist that any fan of Doom 64 should play it, I also think any fan of classic Doom who hasn't, should give Doom 64 a try. I really enjoyed the new levels, and I think Kaiser knocked it out of the park, I really can't stress that enough.

All that said, I'm still fairly lukewarm about the story in Doom 4 and 5 though, and prefer to think of it as a separate cannon from the classic iD games, and just sorta maybe tied into Doom 64 as a piece of fan fiction (not actually bad fan fiction, mind).

I haven't played the DLC, but they're doing something where Doomguy failed in a previous Hell invasion of Earth, and this time he's making up for that with unrelenting slaughter of the demons. Doom lore since Doom 2 has been a shitshow and just became a complete circus with Ancient Gods. Imagine if we had a Doom singleplayer-oriented multiplayer roleplaying game akin to Dark Souls with other survivors, each fitting a role, security guards, doctors, scientists, engineers, etc.. Humans are harvesting alien energy, they mess it up and that opens in a portal to another dimension populated by an alien species that ancient humans referred to as demons, and were believed to be a myth, but those aliens managed to contact humans in the past and we quickly realize demons are real and have been using that unique form of energy to power their own technology that we believed to be magic, and that's where Doom's science+religion theme begins. I have a pretty good job and a wife and two kids. I suppose I could post take a picture of our family portrait on the wall and black out the faces but I'm not doing that.

That's ok, you don't need to. Doom Eternal's lore isn't canon.

"canon" feels like a way to have more power over a series, which is probably why zenimax will encourage the "doom lore" aspect more
because final doom isn't "canon" yet it existed
doom 64 wasn't made by id themselves, yet exists
doom 3 and even rpg were just experiments yet they existed
"lore" not only feels like gentrification because "other franchises" have it too but also feels like something that could limit the series
specially if we get too many games of this version of doom, because at least when the doom 90's fever died, carmack let us mod the game so we could always make more doom for ourselves
there's just something "corporate" and appropriative about this whole thing
if you believe that 2016 and eternal needed to exist to "innovate doom", then you should expect another reboot in in the future
otherwise, this doom lore thing feels like an excuse to milk a reboot version of a series that's already changing the identity to a higher degree than 3, while newcomers don't even think much of modding
we're already saturated with machinegames' wolfensteins before we even got a "proper third one"
if anything, doom benefits from a lack of lore because, by the look of the fanbase, you get the expand doom
specially when some nerds took doom lore more seriously than id themselves, due to the obscure trivia and sources of information that devs have no free time for
at this point, decino and marphyblack might be bigger lore nerds than midnight, even if it comes off as "mario lore"
also, hell is so lame in the new games, they lack the independence and abstract nature they had in the originals, i feel like that's a bigger downgrade than making doomguy have a bit more in common with master chief for no reason

Well, the Doom 3's BFG iteration is referenced in a codex entry (along with the classic iteration) so it can be assumed Doom 3 is in the same timeline but it happens years before Doom 2016.

It'd have been worth for them to try. Their first attempt with Shadow Warrior was pretty decent, second was mostly awful, let's hope their third will be better than both. Either way, I'm glad we got what we did out of that, even if it's not perfect, and I wouldn't trade it for Blood.

Maybe one day, Blood will get the treatment it deserves, and a sequel that's actually good.

I'm really bewildered at how SW2 is mostly a huge downgrade, much worse levels, much worse enemy roster, MUCH worse story and character, and that's with SW13 having just kind of ok (linear) level design, and story and character which at times is kind of good, but often feels halfassed.

The enemy design has to be the worst change, because it's almost comparable to starting with Doom 2's bestiary (varied and with functional roles), then regressing to a Wolfenstein 3D tier enemy roster that's copy pasted/reskinned several times (most enemies do mostly the same things).

Apparently Devolver did approach the IP holders about obtaining the rights to the game, but said they just wanted too much for it. You can blame the greedy bastards at WB for our lack of a proper Blood reboot.

"Too expensive".

Spider monster is broken - the manual says it supposed to shoot lasers, but ingame it actually fires rockets at you in a rapid fashion (and they always come in pairs for guaranteed ~100dmg); also melee attacks cause its AI logic to vomit textstrings at top of your screen for some reason
