I did a few months after it was released in the 90s.

It wasn't "hard," in the sense that it didn't require frame-perfect tricks or any particularly difficult execution. I remember it being TEDIOUS, though. If you get hit once, you likely need to reset. If you miss a red coin on an autoscroller, you need to reset. You have to explore every single inch of every single level.

I honestly didn't really enjoy it at the time, but I did it when I was like 12.

You can also manufacture your own stars by ricocheting eggs and turn them into red eggs.
The game kinda requires some frame-perfect tricks in the later levels, in the sense that a lot of it is multitasking between jumping and aiming/launching eggs at the same time.

I used to speedrun the game so yes I've 100% it more times than I can remember.

It depends what you want to get out of it. If you're serious about being competitive then the reward comes from seeing yourself improve but it is a lot of effort and practice.
If you don't care about getting a top time that's fine too it can still be fun to learn tricks or whatever. I see speedrunning as a way to take a game you really enjoy and give it much more replayability.

It's pretty easy except for a couple of stages, but tedious. None of the flowers/coins are really hidden and they rarely are tricky to get.
