when you think about it, they didn't "fail", they simply had a couple of years where they were successful and lucky and then went back to their usual success, but by then tech giants like sony and microsoft joined and they simply couldn't compete anymore.

>> No.7113237

The failure comes from not maintaining a spot as a console developer after being so popular so long. They fucked the Dreamcast with the 32x/CD if you follow the dominos.

Sega's only mistake was changing the name of the SEGA System™ to Sega Master System. From that point everyone who was expecting the Master system bundle with Safari Hunt and the Light Phaser became severely disappointed.

Nothing wrong with that, they had a few really good years.

I would say that microsoft didn't compete but bought themselves into the market, they sold the original xbox at a massive loss and lost even more during the red ring fiasco. Compared to sega which started small and built themselves up over the years. Any other company would have made the sensible decision to exit the market but microsoft was able to use their monopoly to stay in the market. I would say that no matter how much a console sells, it is a failure if you have to give it away to people.

As for newer consoles, they are pretty close to not really even being consoles in the traditional sense since its just a modified pc arcitecture. Old consoles used common processors but were really tuned for gaming so you could really say they were dedicated gaming machines. In that sense there is no real point in sega making a new console since they would be pretty much forced to do the same x86 architecture anyway.

>>7114157
I was wondering what would happen if they launched dreamcast first in america and let saturn go a bit longer in japan but then I think as soon as ps2 came out sega would be done for in japan.

I think the saturn could have had the potential to a genesis/snes situation which would have been good, saturn started off pretty good from what I've seen of old magazines.

The Saturn was doomed to fail.
The design of the system was horribly botched, and they rushed it out the door thinking they could kill the Playstation by beating them to market.
And then E3 happened. Sega died from a combination of hubris and gross incompetence, and frankly they got what they deserved.

It's a failure because it was entirely caused by their own poor decisions. Sega in the mid to late 90s is a laundry list of the most patently retarded corporate decisions imaginable, and every single one of them was retarded at the time they were made instead of having the benefit of hindsight.

>> No.7114895

Those ports were shit because they were rushed. VF2, Fighting Vipers, Sega Rally, Last Bronx, etc were better because they took advantage of the Saturn's architecture.

SEGA would have been forced to exit the console manufacturing business one way or another. No way they could long term take on the likes of the Sony corporation let alone Microsoft.
SEGA was too volatile, outside home console manufacturing they had arcades and some Sega themed resorts as "backup revenue" and arcades in general have never stopped declining. They had a failed venture into digital cameras 95-98 and that was it.

>> No.7115018

>>7114895
The Saturn's architecture was garbage, and they were too far along in development to do anything meaningful about it when they realized just how garbage it was.
They thought that being first on shelves would be enough to beat Sony, and.....well, see the video in >>7114276 to see how that worked out.

For some reason, people cannot wrap their heads around this. Sega at their peak net worth around 93-95 was still nowhere near Nintendo. Look at Amd all, it took was that shitshow Bulldozer and the company was close to bankruptcy, they were only saved by their past Ati acquisition.

Except nobody thought this. Model 2 hardware was expensive. There's a reason the arcade version of Virtua Fighter 2 looked better than Tekken 3, a game which came out 3 years later. Getting the Saturn version to run 60fps at 720p was a technical feat in and of itself.
