The team behind Rise of the Triad called itself The Developers of Incredible Power (DIP). Its name was created by Tom Hall, the lead designer of ROTT. Other members of DIP included Mark Dochtermann, Jim Dose, Steve Hornback, Chuck Jones, Nolan Martin, Tim Neveu, William Scarboro, Joseph Selinske, Susan Singer, and Marianna Vayntrub. Rise of the Triad was the only game released by DIP. A second game that was planned, Prey, never took off, but its title and parts of the original design were eventually recycled by Human Head Studios. The team was disbanded, and some of the members worked on the bestseller Duke Nukem 3D. Others started their own companies or left the computer games business. Scarboro died from an asthma attack in 2002.

The actual Triadposter was posting stuff from Joe Siegler's blog and ROTT in Hell. Honestly I like the posts because most people aren't going to actually go read either of these but they are interesting facts. This is someone else though as that guy never posted stuff from Wikipedia, I checked. I suspect Australia-kun is again bandwagoning on something to troll with like he did with Speccyposting.

Let's talk about Doom multiplayer.
4-5 years ago people were playing All-out war 2, Samsara, WhoDunIt, vanilla deatmatch, Complex Doom survival, different invasion maps.

Right now I see mostly Megaman Deathmatch (which is fine, but not my cup of tea),
or retarded Complex Doom LCA - which is a CD survival with stupidly overpowered monsters

What is going on? Has everyone moved to private discords or something?
Or maybe there's something wrong with my doomseeker?

Nevermind the ping, I'm from Eastern Europe and it's morning here. But there are no good games on our servers either.

It takes nothing to set up a TSPG game to your liking. Gotta be the change you want to see.

In answer to your question more directly, loads more video games are available to the world than ever before at cheap prices or totally free. Genshin Impact, and the myriads of other "gacha" titles, Destiny 2 with its ever changing world and being free while giving that social validation; more things competing for one's time.

I do understand your sentiment but TSPG isn't the best. I've set up TSPG for us dudes here before, it's kinda shitty because it doesn't give the "owner" (I know that the server is hosted by TSPG and they don't want someone fucking around with their name, actual servers, or something) server admin privileges so that you can't force map changes, etc outside of voting which has a long cooldown. It does prevents server admin powertrip autism, I suppose. The only alternative I know of is setting up your own server, which factors in your internet speed and hardware.

That's what RCON is for. All servers have an RCON password and you can use it ingame to do that kind of stuff. Use the send_password command to verify it and then use the rcon command along with server commands.
You still can't do things like enabling cheats, though. That could potentially break tspg.

To whom it may concern, Project Brutality's monsters are available in standalone format, but it's not on moddb due to politics, but damn I must say, it does a pretty good job making Doom feel like a Build shooter if you're just using vanilla Doom weapons, Final Doomer, or Babel. I'm pretty gobsmacked at how fun this is. The only things I'd recommend is ixnaying any idea of pistol start if you're playing on UV, going into the options menu to disable shield enemies since those guys are balanced around grenades and kicks from PB, and turning the gore down to realistic to better feel like proper Doom.

You people give Doom II too little credit. It is single-handedly responsible for the attitude regarding Doom modding and mapping with maps like Gotcha!, and Tricks and Traps, and others. This attitude has reverberated ever since, just as the bulk of Half-Life 1 mods are about telling stories because HL1 was telling the story of the Black Mesa Incident.

Moreover, Doom II's level design is a lost art, and I find it being less appreciated year by year. That shit worries me. Morbid Autumn, that wad talked about in this thread? It's a fine mappack, it really is. The locations feel realized, and it's totally outside the realm of something you'd see in Doom II; it feels like a true throughline from Doom 1 in terms trying to make a place feel believable. But there's none of the platforming fuckery, none of the maze fuckery, none of the quirks of engine that the guys figured out with Doom II i.e. leaping across the building via sprinting in that one city map in Doom II, or needing to traverse the black floor that is seemingly "outside" the map boundaries in that one maze map, or The Chasm. Boo fucking hoo, you might fall off, but you don't see that type of experimentation anymore. Even Plutonia played it safe in this regard.

What doesn't help is that a fair share of modders gradually ended up moving from Zandybam to GZDoom, the latter was making some actual developments while the former hasn't even updated in a longass time and is seriously behind in features. So interest just more or less waned as more mods became geared towards single player.

On top of what other people said, AOW2 died because of a combination of drama and collusion. Group of people starte always playing on the same time with external comms and using super tryhard optimal strats that can only be done with said comms (like donating everyone's cash to a couple players so they can buy mechs and zerg rush the enemy obelisk two minutes into the game before they have any defenses, crippling them and guaranteeing an eventual victory), and they always stomped the other team comprised entirely of pub users. People got sick of it and just stopped playing. Then those exact same people who made everyone leave took over development of the mod, buffed their own strategies and thought it would make people come back. It didn't work who'd'a thunk

Yeah, that's a gimmick which was occasionally used in the 90s, in fact Plutonia uses it like twice, though you can eventually bust the archies to put a stop to it.

Fun fact, *crushed* corpses exhibit a really fun bug where they retain their crushed height when raised (ergo, like zero), and as a result all your shots pass through them, meaning the only way to kill them again is to hit them with splash damage from explosions. This is called the Ghost Monsters bug.

Not sure but I had a shitload of problems with WinROTT. Civvie used Icculus for his review, a ROTT source port for Linux that was ported to Windows. I never could get it going either because of problems with SDL.dll, apparently there was a Window 10 update that broke it. Kept getting errors

I said fuck it and used DOSBox. Game supports horizontal mouselook but has the problem alot of old shooters have that forward and backward movement with the mouse makes your character move forward and back. You can either use the novert.com file (google it or ask for help here) to fix it. Also if you look in the Steam forums for ROTT someone posted edits to the games config file to make sensitivity 0 for the vertical movement.

Alternatively, you could just play in DOSBox as is and try to keep your mouse as still as possible with forwards and back movement. Its doable.

Or just wait for the sourceport. Full mouselook support, widescreen, multiplayer, the works. Coming to all consoles and PC early 2021.

Or if you're desperate, you can play the Sega 32X port.

The fellating of so called "BASED CARMACK" in these threads is troubling to me. Do you know anything about John Carmack? he managed to drive off every founding member of iD with his fucking autism and inability to handle the fact that they needed him to keep their edge. Instead of recognizing that he wielded disproportionate power (and backing off to let the other legs of the famous Carmack-Romero-Hall tripod work their magic) he systematically retaliated whenever their creativity didn't jive with whatever programming shit he was currently on., first driving off Hall and then Romero.

I mean, for fuck's sake, this is a man who:

1. Had to nearly be held at gunpoint to add secret walls to Wolfenstein.

2. Thought nothing of disappearing for three weeks down the asshole of Florida somewhere in a motel to write one of the Quake engines (he told no one where the fuck he was, he's the head of the company at this time).

3. Decided at one point than "maximum efficiency" could only be achieved among his employees at iD by pitting their weekly performance against each other "Deathmatch Style". People _were_ fired over this, office morale plummeted (gee, I wonder why?).

4. Is a staunch advocate of the "objectivist philosophy". I have never met a self-proclaimed objectivist who was not an exploitative piece of hypocritical shit, much like its original founder Ayn Rand.

5. Likes Diet Coke. Who the fuck likes Diet Coke? Only goddamn aliens, that's who.

They had the perfect fucking tripod, man: Hall brings the lore, Romero brings the gameplay, Carmack brings the tech. Instead they let the entire enterprise become completely servile to whatever autistic shit Carmack happened to be on at the time.

>Tom didn't write shit for Doom
Tom had important input to Doom during its development, even if 85% of his design ideas were trashed. Teleporters and flying monsters were features he fought to have in the game. Some of the best maps in the shipped game (and one in the sequel), was made by refurbishing his concept levels.

However, many of Tom's ideas also didn't fit with the direction that Doom was going, and it was better that he would leave, giving us the Doom that we got, and also giving us Rise Of The Triad, which was Tom Hall compensating for his misaimed drive towards realism during Doom's development, by making a shooter which was instead completely goddamn fucking bonkers.
He'd never get to really make a game like that under iD Software if he conformed to the company's direction, and he never would have gone on to make Anachronox, if you ask Tom himself it really was the right thing to do in the end, even though he may miss his boy Billy.

>and then Romero
Romero wasn't innocent himself in that, his ego had swelled to gigantic proportions at that time, and he was faltering at work, he contributed a lot less to Doom 2 (even though he made some of the best maps), and he bears at the very least half the burden of Quake's development going the way it did (though given how good Quake did turn out anyway, I think it's for the better).

The other stuff I mostly just chalk up to Carmack being a sperg but this one is sort of unforgivable. Really shitty.

That said Carmack himself has acknowledged that he was a arrogant little shit with zero empathy in his younger years (famous incident where Kevin Cloud told Carmack his daughter got into Yale, which he had been talking about for months and was super excited about and Carmacks response was "Mmm" without even looking away from his screen. Its mostly because it does so many neat things like jump pads, moving platforms, weapons like the heat seeker (which is defeated by flames or torches in the level, if one is closer than an enemy it will seek it instead, neat touch) It feels very "video game", very arcadish for an FPS and that makes it fun, at least for some. If you go into it wanting the gunplay of something like Doom you will always be disappointed.

This was actuslly a popular opinion among the PC player old guard at the time. In fact there were debates among the staff of PC Gaming magazine if they should even cover what were then just referred to as "3D games" like DOOM because it wasn't a "real PC game" and more like a twitch arcade game in their eyes. If it wasn't some deep RPG or strategy game with stats the hardcore PC players thumbed their nose at it and bemoaned Dooms huge notoriety in "their" hobby.

I tend to find that any HD textures and sprites for an old 2.5D shooter tends to make the game look like complete shit due to the disconnect of the resolution vs. the geometry. You can display a game like that in a high resolution, and that works, but if the textures themselves are ridiculously high resolution, it kills the illusion and the walls are going to look completely flat, like a photo printed on wall.

Lol this Doom 3 post is based:
>John Carmack, creator of DOOM3, has announced the birth of his first child. A boy named Daemon, born on Friday the 13th, 2004. "Beelzebub had such an influence on all the DOOMs that it seemed only fitting that we consecrate the child with a name seeped in evil idolatry," said Carmack. Moreover while the child was born in an ultra-modern hospital Carmack insisted that the hospital's electrical power be cut to 12% of optimal usage with the doctors' only direct illumination provided by a single hand-held flashlight. "It's scarier this way," explained Carmack. "Besides then the sharp points on the kid's head look more pixilation seams than little devil horns." The Hospital's staff went along with Carmack's weird 'in the dark' requests mostly because he was so darn rich and the fact he was waving a chaingun around at the time he checked his wife into the facility.

The word you're looking for is abstract

the crowbar 1 shots headcrabs in hl2, not in hl1. Why not just shoot zombies? You get so much ammo on hard difficulty they're never a problem instead of whacking them 16 times, ducking in and out of their attack range. Just seems like a bad way to make the game more tedious.

It doesn't need to one-shot them in HL1, Gordon has fucking bionic blender arms. And there's way more zombies than ammo in the starting segment of HL1, you may as well learn the timing of tangling with them at arm's reach.

They pretty much took the new engine and implemented the tried old formula from Doom, adjusting for engine limitations (like having to do with less enemies). It worked, but ultimately it pushed id into creative rut from which it will never come out. To this day, even in its zombie form, id is still trying to put a new spin on a "marine with a shotgun" formula.

Based. Actually had a cool Marathon Durandal dream this morning predicated on its floaty physics. Enemies (many of them simulacrums) would continuously flood in through two doors in a single large room, while the player has to ride elevators located in different corners, hitting switches that would activate further elevators/switches but also usher in larger waves of enemies. You couldn't control the elevators' descent so once on top you had several seconds to shoot as many simulacrums with your pistol and maximize splash damage, so that you could jump mid-air into an enemy-cleared path to the next elevator without getting blown up. After a few cycles these massive Shrek enemies - thin but probably 50 feet tall - began to spawn in and they could Hulk-punch you even at the top of an elevator. Those spooked me and I woke up.

The assault rifle exists for crowd control; grenade launcher to snipe enemies and to corral them, rifle mode when you're up close to stun-lock them. The rocket launcher can blast people across an entire map. The only shitty weapon in the full Marathon Infinity arsenal is the flamethrower.

It does have one of the best shotguns in FPS, flamethrower satisfies inner war criminal, pistols feel like they hit hard and punching is viable if you're good at evading projectiles. The Alien weapon differs in 1 to 2 but it feels like what the AR should've been because it absolutely demolishes everything and feels good to use. It's also cool that it's the first game to actually implement guns akimbo (it was more like just another weapon in the roster in ROTT)
However, as I'm not a fully blind Marathon fanboy, I do agree the gameplay is not as good as Doom's. Every weapon in Doom is very useful and the enemy variety overall better. The floaty physics in Marathon is cool concept because it's supposed to simulate that you're in space but it sometimes becomes a chore when going through stairs. I'd say the thing Marathon has over Doom is that it doesn't have hitscanners and no-damage runs are a fair challenge.

Agreed actually, flamethrower is good in the original. But in Marathon 2 it's the last weapon you get and it doesn't work out well for the later levels and enemy groups. I guess calling it shitty is a slight exaggeration, but considering how little ammo you get and how it's only useful on enemies more easily killed with the shotguns and assault rifle, it could have been done a lot better.
>>7114262
I think in overall singleplayer gameplay (complexity, gunplay, physics) Durandal/Infinity beat Doom. Marathon almost feels like a 3D shooter in terms of aiming and the value of precision, yet still has a strong and simple core loop. And the fists are so much more fun in Marathon. The biggest shortcomings are in the buggy-as-shit netplay and the smaller and less interesting bestiary. Doom 2 did an amazing job fleshing out combat with chaingunner/mancubus/archvile/pain ele all filling different niches, while Marathon's only sub-boss type enemy is the juggernaut (which are honestly tedious to fight). I wish that the hunter hound (fast-moving stair-avoiding melee enemy) and apocalypse beast (tank-ish bullet-hell projectile shooter) weren't cut from the original.

https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/a-c/bloodriver

A "my first map" project from... 2020, looks nice, very tight on ammo, and is a pretty fun quick little map.
The most fascinating part about this is just showing how much map makers in general have improved over the years and how easy a available the information is. When I see my first map I start to remember those terrible 2-3 boxy rooms with broken doors, misaligned textures everywhere, retarded enemy placement and just generally unfun to play. This map is none of those, still rough around the edges, but a 10/10 as far as "my first map" go

I play the original Quake 1 and its mission packs in Mark V WinQuake because it's like Crispy Doom in that it can play in 320x240 or 640x480 resolutions with widescreen rendering and it also uses the original game's software renderer, pic related. But I think most custom maps need Quakespasm (or QSS).

Also btw I just learned that to launch the mission packs, you just use the -hipnotic or -rogue commands; -game is for mods. If you launch mp2 with the -game rogue command, the ammo icons are all bugged.

However, despite also being limited to 90 degree walls like its technological predecessor, I don't blame ROTT's failures in level design on its engine; the devs added all of these cool floating platforms and interactive features but decided to stick with gay mazes and 'Gotcha!' style traps, making anything past the first episode a slog to play through.

This is the answer from Steam:
Not possible, and the included DOSBox Version is not supporting separate X and Y mouse sensitivity setup. You'll have to update DOSBox with one that comes with this support and modify ROTT.conf sensitivity to 100,0 or you try a source port. I'm using this: https://dosboxece.yesterplay.net/

Alternatively, you can download a program called novert.com from the idgames archive. launch that program in dosbox, then launch ROTT from that same window. for example:
>mount d: d:\
>d:
>cd dosgames
>novert
>cd rott
>rott
Also you should download the DOSBox pixel perfect fork and use that. Not required but recommended.

ModDB is where you go for Brutal derivatives and overly bloated gameplay mods with blurred sprites that uncannily move at 60 FPS.

samefagging here: I know it's discouraging to sink so much time into creating something and having it fall flat - I was in a band where we were finishing the final touches on our first album before the vocalist randomly quit and wasted our entire summer of recording. Shit fucking sucks sometimes, if it bums you out a ton take a small break and then get back to creating fairly quickly.

I decided to crack open "Doom Mania !!"
found on this dude's page
https://www.moddb.com/members/pmdleadershinx

> Included on this disk is 525 Wads for Doom, 7 New graphic styles, 6 Music wads, 9 Doom level editors and various other cutting room material

I picked one at random and it was Frogger3.wad.. It has nothing to do with Frogger and upon loading I was blasted with a Star Wars midi. It's complete ass and apparently incompletable. I can't deny I was entertained. (also makes me feel much better about some of the shit I've made)

I keep working on it. I should really have been, you know, developing the general layout and gameplay of this one, instead of the stupid bullshit I'm doing with detailing one part, but that's just anxiety to you. I still have a vague plan in my head, that I'm going to pursue, I'm just fucking unproductive about it.

Dwars started a new series today, it's long form reviews sort of like Civvie. It's actually pretty good and he has toned down his spergery considerably, maybe he lurks here? Or thats just what he sounds like when he reads a script.

You can change the game's sprites and sounds to your liking using Slade. It's very intuitive to use, even a brainlet like me figured it out just copy/pasting sprites and sounds from wads (you also need to use the s_start and s_end tags to denote the sprite lump). I used to change them, like changing the shotgun sound to the Quake 3 one, but I ended up preferring playing without mods, except for one's like Vanilla Smooth Weapons, Doom Sprite Fix, or PerK's Hi-Res SFX.

More enemies doesn't necessarily mean a better sandbox. Marathon's current issues are that there's only four big boy enemies- hunters, enforcers, troopers and tanks. Everything else is cannon fodder. Look at the last level of Infinity, it's literally only hunters. Unless these cut enemies did anything unique it's not a big loss
